Regional languages

Regional influencer marketing in India

Your buyer in Coimbatore, Kolkata or Kochi does not think in English, so the creator should not either. We cast native-language creators, brief them in their own language and measure each language as its own market.

In short

  • Treat each language as a separate market with its own creators, festivals, platforms and cost per result, not as a translation of your English campaign.
  • One published rate card puts regional-language YouTube channels 40% to 60% below Hindi or English channels; tier 3 and 4 cities also show the highest engagement.
  • Brief creators in three layers: fixed claims and offer, free idiom and humour, and local proof. Then have a native speaker review the draft before you approve it.
  • The ASCI disclosure label may be in English or in the language of the ad, but it must be easy for an average viewer to understand.

Regional influencer marketing in India means hiring creators who speak your buyer's first language, briefing them in that language and measuring each language market separately. It works when your growth now depends on people who read, watch and trust content in Tamil, Telugu, Marathi, Bengali, Kannada, Malayalam, Gujarati, Punjabi or Hindi more than in English. It fails when a campaign is written in English, translated word for word and handed to creators who then read it aloud.

Influencer Gully casts regional creators on the same 100-point Gully Score as every other campaign, and adds the checks that language demands: whether the comment section runs in that language, and whether the audience lives where you sell.

Start with four decisions

  1. Which languages? Begin from sales or app data by state and city, not from a list of the biggest languages. Pick two to four to test, not nine.
  2. Which platforms? YouTube and Instagram carry most of the work. Section below.
  3. Native or fluent creators? We prefer creators who grew up speaking the language over those who are fluent. Audiences hear the difference in humour, rhythm and slang.
  4. How will you brief? In three layers, with native-language review before anything goes live.

Nine language markets at a glance

Use this table to choose where to test first. The category column is our starting hypotheses, not audience data; every campaign starts with a small test in each language before you commit more budget.

Hindi is itself several markets. A creator from Lucknow, one from Jaipur and one from Patna use different words for the same thing, and we cast by city as well as language.

Why language changes results, and what the evidence cannot tell you

Most of India's internet users live outside the metros. IAMAI and Kantar's Internet in India 2025 report counts about 958 million active internet users, about 57 percent of them rural. The 2024 edition found 57 percent of users prefer regional-language content, though one outlet tied that figure to urban users, so we quote it with care. In a 2026 creator-platform survey, more than 62 percent of creators said they are receiving more regional-language briefs, which tells you where brands are moving.

The same report also says vernacular content beats English on engagement, trust and conversion but publishes no numbers behind the claim. We have not seen the data, so we do not promise the effect. We design every regional campaign as a test: one set of claims, an identical offer and tracking, and a separate cohort for each language so the numbers decide where you scale.

The same survey reports engagement of 4.5% to 5.5% in tier 3 and 4 cities against 3% to 4% in metros, at lower campaign costs (₹35,000 to ₹90,000 against ₹3.8 lakh to ₹4.5 lakh, with campaign size undefined). Both are vendor estimates, so use them as direction.

Platforms for regional campaigns

SnapchatYounger audiences; tests for lower-ticket and youth productsPassed 250 million monthly active users in India; about 90 percent of daily users are aged 13 to 34; Snap says it is focusing on regional creators
ShareChat, Moj, JoshRegional-first social and short videoPublished user figures conflict widely, so we do not quote any; we test only when your buyer is clearly there

Regional creators on YouTube and Instagram are also easier to track. Link stickers, descriptions and pinned comments carry codes the same way they do in English, as set out in our Instagram and YouTube pages.

What we check when casting for a language

A creator who is fluent is not always a creator who is native, and a follower count can hide the difference. Beyond the Gully Score, we check four things on every regional shortlist:

  1. Comment language. Do followers reply in the language, in its own script or in romanised form, or mostly in English or Hinglish? The mix shows which audience you would really be buying.
  2. Audience geography. Top cities and states in the insights should match the home markets, not the metro where the creator now lives. A Tamil creator whose followers sit mostly in Chennai and Coimbatore is a different buy from one whose audience is scattered across the country.
  3. Dialect and register. Formal or colloquial, and which regional variety. Hindi in Lucknow, Jaipur and Patna differs, and viewers notice when a creator sounds like a presenter.
  4. Past brand work in the language. Whether sponsored posts perform close to organic ones. A creator whose brand posts fall flat in their own language is a risk in any campaign. Our guide to finding influencers in India covers the audience checks in more depth.

Briefing in the buyer's language: transcreation

Translation converts words. Transcreation rebuilds the message so it lands the way a friend would say it. A line like "treat yourself" becomes an instruction in a literal translation and sounds like a lecture. We brief in three layers:

LayerWhat it containsWho controls it
FixedProduct name, claims, price, offer, links and codes, disclosure labelYou and our compliance check; creators cannot change it
FlexibleHook, humour, analogy, music, slang, the story that carries the claimThe creator, in their own idiom
Local proofFestival, city, local price comparison, a shop or habit viewers recogniseThe creator, with your approval

The process runs in four steps. Our team writes the brief in English; a native reviewer, not machine translation alone, renders it in the creator's language; the creator writes the script; and a second native reviewer produces an English summary with each claim flagged. You approve the claims, not the language, and creators keep their voice. That matters for a brand team that does not read Telugu or Bengali but must still be accountable for what is said.

Compliance in every language

ASCI's guidelines allow the disclosure label in English or in the language of the ad, and require it to be easy for an average consumer to understand, upfront and prominent. For a Tamil Reel that can mean an on-screen label written in Tamil, which we usually prefer to an English one that viewers scroll past. Claims must be checked against what the brand can substantiate in any language, and health or finance creators need the qualifications ASCI requires, whichever language they speak. Our ASCI influencer guidelines explainer covers the rules. This is general information, not legal or tax advice.

Mistakes that sink regional campaigns

  • Translating the English script word for word. The claim survives and the personality does not.
  • Picking languages by size instead of sales. The biggest language is not necessarily where your buyers are.
  • Using one festival calendar everywhere. Pongal, Onam and Durga Puja are not Diwali, and a post built around the wrong festival looks borrowed.
  • Judging a market on one creator. A language cohort needs several creators before its numbers mean anything.
  • Stretching a thin shortlist. Some niches have few vetted creators in some languages. A weak list gives weak results, so we flag it.
  • Approving only the script. Creators can improvise on camera, so a native reviewer checks the final video for claims too, not just the written script.

What regional campaigns cost

Instagram and YouTube fees in regional languages follow the same tier bands as Hindi and English: a micro Reel runs about ₹8,000 to ₹80,000 and a micro YouTube dedicated video about ₹20,000 to ₹1.2 lakh. The difference shows up on YouTube, where one published rate card puts regional-language channels 40% to 60% below Hindi or English.

Micro YouTube formatHindi or EnglishRegional language, with the full 40% to 60% less
Dedicated video₹20,000 to ₹1.2 lakhAbout ₹8,000 to ₹72,000
Integration, 60 to 90 s₹15,000 to ₹60,000About ₹6,000 to ₹36,000
Short₹8,000 to ₹40,000About ₹3,200 to ₹24,000

The right-hand column is our arithmetic from one published discount, shown to illustrate the direction. Real quotes depend on the niche, the creator's engagement and how many creators exist in that language. Finance, tech and health still carry premiums, and usage rights, exclusivity and GST apply as in any campaign. Published benchmarks suggest agency fees of 15% to 25% of creator spend. See the influencer marketing cost guide and cost calculator.

How we run regional campaigns

Our six-stage process applies. The regional specifics are these:

  • Plan, within 48 hours. A language and city map, creators per language with Gully Scores, and the festival calendar for each market.
  • Casting. Native speakers whose comments, captions and audience cities match the language. We tell you when supply in a niche is thin.
  • Brief and review. The three-layer brief in the creator's language, and native review of every script with an English summary.
  • Contracts. Disclosure label wording in the language of the ad, usage rights and the usual two revision rounds.
  • Live and tracked. Staggered posting around local festivals, unique codes per creator, comments monitored in the language.
  • Reporting. Cost per result by language cohort, with a recommendation of which markets to scale and which to pause.

Where regional fits

Regional creators multiply the reach of a micro-influencer programme and give UGC videos a local voice for paid ads. Frequently asked questions

Which regional languages are best for influencer marketing in India?

The right language is wherever your buyers are, so start from sales data by state and city. We cast in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Marathi, Bengali, Kannada, Malayalam, Gujarati and Punjabi, and can test others. Our guide to finding influencers in India explains how we match audience to creator.

Are regional language influencers cheaper than Hindi or English ones?

Often, but not always. One published rate card puts regional-language YouTube channels 40% to 60% below Hindi or English channels, and a 2026 creator-platform report shows lower campaign costs in tier 3 and 4 cities. Niches with few creators, such as finance or premium tech, leave less room to negotiate. See the influencer rates guide.

Do regional creators get better engagement than English or Hindi creators?

One creator platform's 2026 report says vernacular content beats English on engagement, trust and conversion but publishes no figures. Its survey does show engagement of 4.5% to 5.5% in tier 3 and 4 cities against 3% to 4% in metros. We treat both as hypotheses and measure cost per result by language in every campaign.

How do you brief creators in regional languages?

We split the brief into fixed claims and offer, flexible hook and humour, and local proof such as festivals and prices. It is delivered in the creator's language, and the creator writes the script in their own idiom. A native reviewer then checks the draft, and you get an English summary with claims flagged for sign-off.

Does the ASCI disclosure label have to be in the creator's language?

ASCI allows the label in English or in the language of the ad, and it must be easy for an average consumer to understand, placed upfront and prominently. A Tamil Reel can carry an English label like Ad or Sponsored, but a native-language label is clearer for many viewers. See our ASCI guidelines explainer. This is general information, not legal advice.

Which platforms work for regional influencer marketing?

YouTube and Instagram carry most regional creator work, because they have the largest audiences and the best tracking. Snapchat is worth testing for younger audiences. We do not quote user numbers for ShareChat, Moj or Josh because published figures conflict, and we test them only when your buyer is clearly there.

Can you run one campaign across several languages at once?

Yes. We build a cohort of creators per language with the same claims, offer and tracking, then compare cost per result across languages in one tracker. This is the fastest way to find which market to scale. See our approach to micro-influencer marketing.

Do you work in languages beyond the nine you list?

We can often cast creators in Bhojpuri, Odia, Assamese, Haryanvi, Rajasthani and others, but supply varies by niche. When we find a language has too few vetted creators for your category, we tell you in the plan rather than stretch the shortlist.
