In short
- UGC differs from an influencer post: the creator makes the video, but it runs from your brand account, site or listing, so you buy craft and rights, not reach.
- Brief five formats (unboxing, testimonial, demo, problem-solution, comparison) and ask each creator for alternate hooks, so one shoot gives you many ads to test.
- Usage rights decide what you actually own: platforms, paid or organic, duration, territory, whitelisting access and raw files. Agree them before the shoot.
- We quote UGC per project because no reliable Indian price benchmark exists; the main drivers are length, number of variants, rights window and turnaround.
UGC (user-generated content) for brands in India means videos made by real creators in a customer's voice, which the brand then uses in its own ads, product pages and listings. You pay for the video and the right to use it, not for the creator's followers. That makes UGC the cheapest way to produce a large number of ad variants, and the best way to find out which message, hook and creator style sells before you spend heavily on media.
Influencer Gully briefs, shoots, contracts and tests UGC for brands. This page explains the formats that work, how we batch production, what to get in the usage-rights clause, how to test in Meta and YouTube ads, and what drives price.
UGC or influencer post: choose by the job
| UGC video | Influencer post | |
|---|---|---|
| Where it appears | Your ad account, site, listings, email | The creator's own account |
| Whose audience sees it | The audience you target with budget | The creator's followers |
| What you pay for | Content, craft and usage rights | Reach, trust and content |
| Creator's follower count | Mostly irrelevant | Central to the fee |
| Time to first ad | Days after delivery | After approval and posting |
| Best for | Ad creative, product pages, testing messages | Awareness, credibility, launches |
| Main metrics | Hook rate, hold rate, CTR, cost per result | Views, saves, codes, sales |
Pick UGC when you already spend on Meta or YouTube ads, your ads are tiring and you need fresh angles, or you want to test messages cheaply. Pick influencer posts when you need an audience, not just a video. The best programmes combine both: the same creator posts organically, the brand runs a cut-down as an ad, and UGC creators who are not influencers supply volume. Our blog compares UGC vs influencer marketing with more on the trade-offs, and creator ads and whitelisting covers running a creator's own post as an ad.
Five formats that work as ads
| Format | What the first three seconds show | The proof shot | What to avoid | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Unboxing | The parcel opening, reaction on the face | Product held to camera, size and texture visible | Long packaging detail with no use | Gifting, D2C first purchase, anything with a good unboxing |
| Testimonial | A direct line to camera about a real problem | The creator using it, with a result in view | Scripted praise that nobody believes | Beauty, wellness, apps, anything where trust is the barrier |
| Demo | The product doing the thing, fast | The full action, start to finish, on one take | Cuts that hide whether it works | Appliances, gadgets, tools, food prep |
| Problem and solution | The annoying moment, stated plainly | The fix, shown with a before and after | A fake problem the viewer does not have | Household, personal care, finance apps, edtech |
| Comparison | Two options side by side | A visible difference on the same task | Naming a competitor in a way you cannot substantiate | Considered purchases and price-sensitive categories |
Hook variants: one shoot, many ads
The first three seconds decide whether someone watches. In the same session, we ask each creator to record three to five alternate openings for the same body of the video: a question, a bold claim, a result shot first, an interruption, a before-and-after. Everything after the hook stays identical, so when one version outperforms, you know the hook did it. Ten creators filming two videos with three hooks each gives 60 openings to test, from one round of production.
Batch production
We run UGC as a production line, not as individual commissions.
- One brief. A single page: product truth, one claim per video, forbidden claims, format, length, aspect ratio (vertical for most ad placements), audio requirement, hook options, and what must be visible on screen.
- Samples first. Creators send a short test clip or past work before booking, because a UGC creator's craft shows in a 15-second sample.
- Product shipped to all creators together, so delivery dates align and the shoot window is the same.
- An agreed filming window. Creators film at home or in a real setting, with natural light and clean audio, not in a studio.
- Delivery in layers. Final edit, raw files if the contract includes them, and the alternate hooks as separate clips, named by creator and variant.
- Review in a batch. We check claim, label, product visibility, audio and rights before anything reaches your ad account, and the contract allows two revision rounds.
Usage rights decide what you actually bought
A UGC fee that looks cheap often buys a short, narrow licence. Before the shoot, we write these terms into the contract:
| Term | The question it answers | Cost effect |
|---|---|---|
| Platforms | Meta, YouTube, website, marketplaces, email, in-store screens? | Each added platform raises the fee |
| Paid or organic | Can you run it as a paid ad, or only post it? | Paid use costs more than organic only |
| Duration | Three months, twelve months or perpetual? | Perpetual rights are the most expensive; one rate card puts them at +80% to 150% |
| Territory | India only, or beyond? | Wider territory costs more |
| Edits | Can you cut it, add captions, change the music or re-voice it? | Allowing edits is worth paying for |
| Whitelisting | Can you run it from the creator's handle? | Priced separately; see our whitelisting page |
| Likeness and voice | Can the face and voice be used in other creative? | Needed if you want to reuse across campaigns |
| Raw files | Do you receive the unedited clips? | Needed if you want to re-cut hooks yourself |
As a planning default we add about 35% to a base fee for usage rights, and published rate cards also quote about 20% to 50% a month for use beyond the campaign period. Whichever model applies, put the dates and platforms in writing. Our guide to influencer contracts in India explains each clause.
Testing UGC in Meta and YouTube ads
The point of producing many assets is to find the one that works and then run it harder. We test in stages, changing one thing at a time.
| Stage | What changes | Metric we read | Decision |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Concept test | Different formats and angles, each with the same hook style | Cost per click, cost per result | Keep the best two or three concepts |
| 2. Hook test | Same body, three to five different openings | Hook rate (the share of impressions that reach three seconds) | Keep the hooks that hold viewers |
| 3. Body and length test | Shorter cut against longer cut | Hold rate (the share of three-second viewers who reach the end or 15 seconds) | Keep the version that keeps people watching |
| 4. Offer and call to action | Code, free shipping, bundle, wording | CTR, cost per result, ROAS | Choose the offer |
| 5. Audience test | Broad against lookalike against retargeting | Cost per result by audience | Decide where to scale |
On Meta we run each concept as its own ad inside the same ad set, give each variant the same spend and judge only once each has enough clicks and conversions to compare; pausing early on a few clicks produces false winners. On YouTube, Shorts ads and in-stream ads test different things: Shorts reward fast hooks, in-stream rewards a strong first five seconds before the skip button appears. We compare every UGC ad against your brand-made creatives on the same metrics, because the question is not whether UGC works but whether it beats what you run today. Fresh variants go in before the winners tire. See how to measure influencer marketing ROI for the reporting side.
UGC for listings and your own site
The same creators can supply video for product pages on your site and on marketplaces. Marketplace video rules differ and change, and generally restrict prices, offers, external links and competitor mentions, so the brief for a listing video is different from the brief for an ad. It shows the product, its size, how to use it and what is in the box, in a calm voice, with no sales pitch. On your own site, a short demo or testimonial above the buy button is often the cheapest conversion test you can run. We ask for alternate cuts of the same clips, in the ratios and lengths each placement needs.
What drives UGC pricing
We do not know of a reliable published India benchmark for UGC, and we will not invent one. We quote per project once we know the following:
| Driver | Direction of effect |
|---|---|
| Video length and number of finished cuts | Longer and more cuts cost more |
| Number of hooks recorded | More alternates cost a little more per video, far less than a new shoot |
| Usage window, platforms and territory | Wider and longer means a higher fee |
| Paid-ad rights and whitelisting | A separate line |
| Raw files and edit rights | Included at extra cost |
| Script and revisions | Extra rounds beyond two cost extra (one rate card quotes ₹5,000 to ₹30,000 each) |
| Turnaround | Rush under 48 hours adds about 25% to 40% in published cards |
| Production | Props, locations, a second person on camera, extra product |
| Creator experience and niche | Finance, tech and health specialists charge more |
| Language | Regional-language creators may price differently; see regional influencer marketing |
Our management fee is separate. For the paid-post side, see the influencer marketing cost guide and cost calculator.
Rules for UGC
When a video runs from the creator's own handle, it needs a clear disclosure label upfront. When it runs as your ad, you own the claims in it, so each claim needs the same evidence as any other ad, and a paid testimonial should not be presented as an independent customer review. The Department of Consumer Affairs' Endorsement Know-hows tell endorsers not to endorse what they have not used or checked, so we ask UGC creators to use the product first. If an AI avatar or cloned voice replaces a real creator, ASCI's guidelines on synthetic content, signed on 17 September 2026, require a label where it materially influences consumer decisions. We do not pass AI avatars off as real customers. Our ASCI influencer guidelines explainer covers the rules. This is general information, not legal or tax advice.
How we run UGC
The Influencer Gully process applies, with a creative-testing loop on the end. The brief and call set the goal and the ad accounts the videos will run in. The creator plan arrives within 48 hours with sample clips and Gully Scores. Contracts fix rights and disclosure. Creators film to one brief, we approve in a batch, and the assets go to your ad account or ours. Weekly reports show hook rate, hold rate, CTR and cost per result for every asset, and the closing report names the winning concepts, hooks and creators, and what to brief next.
Where UGC fits
UGC pairs with micro-influencer programmes for audience and Instagram creator campaigns for organic reach, and the best posts can go into creator ads. Our complete guide to influencer marketing in India shows how the pieces fit, and the services overview lists the rest. To see sample creators for your category, send us a brief.
Frequently asked questions
What is UGC content and how is it different from influencer marketing?
UGC is creator-made content, usually a video, that the brand runs in its own ads, site or listings. An influencer post is published to the creator's followers. With UGC you pay for the video and its usage rights; with influencer posts you also pay for reach. Our blog compares UGC vs influencer marketing in detail.
How do I hire UGC creators in India?
You can search creator platforms and social profiles yourself, or brief an agency. Look for natural delivery, clear audio, good lighting and fast turnaround, not follower count, and check past work in your category. We cast from a network of 50,000+ creators, score them on the Gully Score and send you samples before booking.
Do UGC creators need a large following?
Not if the video runs from your own account, because the audience is the one you pay to reach. Craft, delivery and speed matter most. Followers and engagement matter again if the creator also posts the video, or if you run it from their handle as a partnership ad.
How much does UGC cost in India?
We do not know of a reliable published benchmark, so we quote per project. The price moves with video length, number of hooks and edits, how long and where you can use it, whether raw footage is included, language and turnaround. Usage rights typically add about 35% to a base fee. See the influencer rates guide.
What usage rights should a UGC contract include?
State the platforms (Meta, YouTube, website, marketplaces), whether use is paid, organic or both, the duration, the territory, whether you may edit or cut down the video, whether the creator's likeness and voice may be used, and whether you receive raw files. Perpetual rights cost far more than a fixed window. Read our guide to influencer contracts.
Can we run UGC videos as ads on Meta and YouTube?
Yes, if the contract grants paid-use rights. Run them from your brand account as normal ads, or, if the creator agrees, from their handle as partnership ads. We test several concepts and hooks first, then scale the winners. Hook rate, hold rate, click-through rate and cost per result decide which ads continue.
Can UGC videos be used on Amazon and Flipkart listings?
Often yes, if your rights cover marketplaces and the video follows each marketplace's current video rules, which usually restrict prices, offers, links and competitor mentions. Listing videos are briefed differently from ads: they show the product and how to use it, not a sales pitch.
