In short

  • Influencer marketing for fintech works for education, app walkthroughs and trust, not stock tips or return claims. Start by mapping which regulator covers your product.
  • SEBI's 22 October 2024 circular bars regulated entities and their agents from direct or indirect association with unregistered advisers and return-claimers. Referrals and payments count as association.
  • ASCI's Addendum II requires finance creators who give technical advice to hold relevant qualifications and state them upfront, with a SEBI registration number for stocks and investments.
  • Finance creators price at about 1.5x to 2x a beauty baseline in published comparisons. Add several working days for compliance review.

Influencer marketing for fintech and BFSI brands in India works for education, app walkthroughs and trust, and fails when it tries to deliver tips, guarantees or return claims. The first job is not casting. It is working out which regulator covers your product and what that regulator lets a creator say on your behalf. After that, the campaign looks like any other: the right creators, a clear brief, tracked results.

This is the category where a brief written in a hurry can create liability for the brand and the creator. In the Goat Agency and Kantar study, 95% of BFSI brands said they struggle to find the right creators, against about 83% overall. Step one: which rules cover your product

ProductMain regulatorWhat it means for creator campaigns
Stock broking, trading apps, mutual funds, PMS, research and advisorySEBISEBI's association circular binds regulated entities and their agents. ASCI expects a SEBI registration number from creators who give stock or investment advice. Mutual fund advertisements carry SEBI's standard risk warning.
Banks, NBFCs, lending apps, credit cards, payments and UPIRBI regulates the entityAsk the compliance team for approved wording. ASCI's finance rule still applies to creators who give technical advice.
InsuranceIRDAIAn IRDAI licence is one of the credentials ASCI lists for insurance advice. The insurer's compliance team signs off.
Crypto and virtual digital assetsNo SEBI cover; ASCI's 2022 VDA guidelinesMandatory risk disclaimer, no currency or guarantee language, no biased past-performance claims.
Budgeting, savings, expense and payments appsDepends on the featuresASCI disclosure and claims rules; if the app gives investment advice, the rows above apply.

If your product sits across two rows, plan for the stricter one.

What SEBI's circular does, and what it does not

SEBI's circular of 22 October 2024 (SEBI/HO/MIRSD/MIRSD-PoD-1/P/CIR/2024/143) says SEBI-regulated persons, meaning registered intermediaries, stock exchanges, clearing corporations and depositories, and their agents must not have any direct or indirect association with anyone who:

  1. gives securities advice or recommendations without being registered or permitted, or
  2. claims returns or performance without permission.

Associations through a "specified digital platform" are carved out; the platform definition is set separately, so ask your compliance team whether a given platform qualifies. Investor education is not itself prohibited if the person does neither of the two banned things. Existing contracts were to end within three months.

SEBI's FAQ circular of 29 January 2025 (SEBI/HO/MIRSD/MIRSD-PoD-1/P/CIR/2025/11) clarifies that "association" covers money or money's worth, client referrals and system interplay, and that the regulated entity is responsible to the extent of the association. On 8 May 2026 SEBI revised its education-versus-advice FAQ: the look-back window for using market price data in educational content moved from the preceding three months to the preceding thirty days.

The circular binds SEBI-regulated entities and their agents. A fintech that is not SEBI-regulated is not caught by it directly, though ASCI's rules, consumer law and good sense still apply. In practice:

Campaign elementRisk for a SEBI-regulated brandSafer approach
Paying an unregistered creator who gives stock recommendationsHigh: association with a prohibited personCast registered analysts or advisers, or education-only creators
Referral or per-signup payouts to an unregistered finfluencerHigh: referrals and money are associationFlat fees to eligible creators; get legal advice before any performance link
A creator quoting past or expected returnsHigh: return claims are the second banned behaviourBrief on product features, fees, process and risk only
Education Reels using market dataMedium: look-back rule appliesFollow the current SEBI FAQ; have compliance approve examples
App walkthrough with no advice or return claimsLower, but compliance sign-off is still neededScript, screen recording, disclosure, risk wording

ASCI's rules for finance creators

ASCI's Addendum II (6 March 2025) says influencers who give technical advice or comment on the merits or demerits of BFSI or health products must hold relevant qualifications and state them upfront: superimposed or in the opening remark of a video, at the top of a text post, at the start of audio. For stocks and investments that means SEBI registration with the number shown. For other financial advice, suitable credentials such as an IRDAI licence, or being a CA or CS. Proof must be given if ASCI asks.

ASCI's 28 April 2025 update narrowed this: qualifications are needed only where technical information or advice is given. Generic or public-service content does not need them. As our reading of that line: a creator saying "track your monthly spends" is generic; a creator telling viewers which fund to buy is advice.

Other rules that apply to every finance post:

  • Disclosure. A label such as "Ad", "Sponsored" or "Collaboration" upfront and prominent. For videos of 15 seconds or less, on screen for at least three seconds; for videos over 15 seconds and under two minutes, for one third of the video; for two minutes or more, for the whole section that mentions the brand. For live streams and podcasts, announce at the start and end. ASCI found 121 LinkedIn violations in FY2024-25 where professionals did not disclose paid partnerships.
  • Crypto. ASCI's virtual digital asset guidelines (23 February 2022, applying from 1 April 2022) require a prominent risk disclaimer, bar terms such as "currency", and bar promises of profits.
  • Mutual funds. Advertisements issued by or on behalf of a mutual fund carry SEBI's standard warning, worded exactly as SEBI prescribes.
  • Brand safety. Illegal betting was 54% of ASCI's influencer ad violations in FY2025-26, and 318 ads in FY2024-25 were influencers promoting offshore betting. Check every finance creator's last 90 days for betting or tip-channel promotions.
  • Endorser liability. Under the 2022 CCPA guidelines, endorsers can be fined up to ₹10 lakh, and up to ₹50 lakh for subsequent contraventions, and barred from endorsing for up to one year, or three for repeat offences.

Budgets by tier, and the finance multiplier

Published comparisons put finance creators at 1.5x to 2x a beauty baseline, with another source giving a 60 to 120% premium and a third putting finance and tech at two to three times lifestyle or comedy at the same audience size. Personal-finance fees rose 30 to 60% year on year in 2026 in one source. SEBI-registered creators have no published multiplier; we quote them creator by creator.

Applying 1.5x to 2x to our rate model (medians of nine published Indian rate cards, with GST at 18% extra) gives an indicative finance Reel range. This is our arithmetic, not a quote.

TierFollowersBaseline ReelFinance Reel at 1.5x to 2xYouTube dedicated (baseline)

Micro10K to 100K₹8,000 to ₹80,000₹12,000 to ₹1.6 lakh₹20,000 to ₹1.2 lakh

Macro500K to 1M₹2 lakh to ₹8 lakh₹3 lakh to ₹16 lakh₹3 lakh to ₹15 lakh

Two published YouTube reference points: a dedicated review on a 500K-subscriber tech or finance channel runs ₹5 to 12 lakh in one source, and a 60 to 180 second integration on a mid-sized tech or finance channel ₹2.5 to 6 lakh. LinkedIn posts for 30K to 100K followers are quoted at ₹40,000 to ₹2.4 lakh. Competitor exclusivity matters in fintech: 30 days adds 30 to 50%. Management fees at published benchmarks are 15 to 25% of creator spend. See the influencer cost calculator.

Common mistakes in finance influencer campaigns

  1. Booking before mapping the regulator. The wrong creator can put a SEBI-regulated brand in breach.
  2. Casting by subscriber count. A large unregistered finfluencer is more risk, not more value.
  3. Return claims in the brief, however "indicative".
  4. Disclosure at the end. ASCI wants it upfront.
  5. Referral payments without legal review.
  6. Skipping brand-safety checks for betting and tip-channel history.
  7. Treating KYC as the creator's job. Fix onboarding friction before you scale.
  8. Slow approvals. Compliance review that takes a week kills Budget-day or deadline-week content.

How we run fintech and BFSI campaigns

Our six stages apply, with a compliance gate added at the front.

  • Brief and creator plan in 48 hours. We ask which regulators cover your product, who approves content, what you can say and what you cannot. The plan names creators and states which rule set they sit under.
  • Gully Score vetting. Audience authenticity, engagement quality, buyer fit, content craft and brand safety. For finance we add verification of qualifications and registration numbers against the regulator's published lists, and a 90-day scan for betting and tip-channel promotion.
  • Contracts and ASCI disclosure. Label wording, qualification statements, approved wording and takedown terms are in the contract; see influencer contracts in India.
  • Approvals. Scripts and drafts go to you and your compliance team before posting; we keep a record of approved versions.
  • Live, amplified and reported. Weekly reports on cost per KYC-complete and first transaction.

Frequently asked questions

Can a fintech or BFSI brand work with finfluencers in India?

Yes, within the rules. If your company is regulated by SEBI, the 22 October 2024 circular bars association with unregistered people who give securities advice or claim returns. If it is not, ASCI's finance rules and consumer law still apply. Cast educators, registered professionals and app explainers, and keep recommendations and return claims out of briefs.

What does SEBI's October 2024 circular say about influencers?

It says SEBI-regulated persons and their agents must not have any direct or indirect association with anyone who gives securities advice or recommendations without registration or permission, or who claims returns or performance without permission. Investor education is not itself prohibited if the person does neither. See the ASCI influencer guidelines explainer for the advertising rules that sit beside it.

Do finance influencers need SEBI registration?

Under ASCI's Addendum II (6 March 2025), influencers who give technical advice on stocks or investments must hold SEBI registration and show the number. Generic or public-service content without technical advice does not need qualifications, per ASCI's 28 April 2025 update. Ask for proof of registration before booking.

Can influencers promise returns or say an investment is guaranteed?

No. SEBI's circular targets people who claim returns or performance without permission, and ASCI's crypto guidelines bar promising profits. A creator quoting returns in your campaign creates risk for the brand and the creator. Brief on features, fees, process and risk, and have compliance approve every line.

How much do finance influencers charge in India?

Published comparisons put finance at 1.5x to 2x a beauty baseline, with one source adding a 60 to 120% premium. A micro finance Reel might run ₹12,000 to ₹1.6 lakh on that arithmetic, and a dedicated review on a 500K-subscriber finance channel ₹5 to 12 lakh in one source. See the influencer rates guide.

Can we pay creators per sign-up or referral?

For a SEBI-regulated brand, SEBI's FAQ circular says association includes money and client referrals, so referral payments to an unregistered creator are high risk. For other fintech brands, performance deals are possible with disclosure and compliance sign-off. See performance influencer marketing.

How long does compliance approval add to a campaign?

We build in several working days for the brand's compliance team to review the claim sheet, scripts and drafts, and more if legal also signs off. Our usual micro-creator timeline of two to three weeks to launch stretches accordingly. Send us your approval chain at the brief so it does not stall.
