In short

  • Durga Puja, inscribed by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage in 2021, is Kolkata's biggest spending and content season, and campaigns start in August, not September.
  • Bengali comes first for trust, with Hindi and English alongside, and food, fashion, comedy, music and travel are the strongest creator niches.
  • Poila Boishakh, Kali Puja, Bhai Phonta, Saraswati Puja and the book fair make Kolkata a year-round calendar, not just a Puja one.
  • We run Kolkata with local Bengali creators and a New Delhi strategy team, travelling for shoots and launches. We have no Kolkata office.

Kolkata's year turns on one festival, and a brand that treats Durga Puja as a normal sale season loses it. Influencer Gully works Kolkata through Bengali creators, with strategy and reporting run from New Delhi and our own travel to the city for Puja shoots and launches. We have no Kolkata office. The plan, with named creators, content ideas and costs, takes 48 hours from the brief call.

What follows is about Kolkata as a market: the language, the Puja timeline, the industries that sell here, the neighbourhoods creators shoot in, and a calendar that has more than one peak.

Bengali first, Hindi and English alongside

Bengali is the language of trust in Kolkata, and it is the language creators use for food, comedy, music, travel and everyday commentary. Hindi serves a large Hindi-speaking community across the city, English works for professionals and premium categories, and Urdu reaches the neighbourhoods around Park Circus and Zakaria Street. One creator platform's 2026 report says vernacular content beats English on engagement, trust and conversion but publishes no figures, so we test the split for your category.

Bengali audiences also live outside Kolkata, in other West Bengal towns and in cities such as Delhi, Bangalore and Mumbai. Delhi's Chittaranjan Park, for example, runs its own Durga Puja each year. A Kolkata creator's audience insights show how much of their reach sits outside the city, which matters for an offer that only exists in Kolkata and helps if you want a Bengali campaign nationwide.

Durga Puja: a six-week campaign, not a week

UNESCO inscribed Durga Puja in Kolkata on its Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2021. For brands the festival is the single largest retail and content window, and it behaves like a campaign with phases:

PhaseUsual windowCreator contentBrand play
TeasersAugust to early SeptemberPuja shopping lists, fashion previews, idol-making at KumartuliFashion, jewellery, home, gadgets
Shopping waveSeptemberHauls from Gariahat, New Market and Burrabazar, gift guidesApparel, sarees, sweets, appliances
MahalayaStart of the Puja fortnightDawn recitals, family traditions, outfit revealsHeritage-led brands, gifting
Shashthi to DashamiThe five main Puja daysPandal hopping, food trails, sindoor khela, outfit-of-the-dayFood, fashion, beverages, cabs
BijoyaAfter DashamiGreetings, sweets and family visitsSweets, gifting, FMCG

New clothes for Puja are a tradition, so fashion and footwear brands are expected to be visible by August. Many pandals have themes, and big brands sponsor some of them, so a creator content plan can tie into a theme without owning one. Crowd, road closures and shoot permissions are the operational risks: the central pandal clusters in North and South Kolkata are heavily crowded in the evenings, so we send creators early morning or late at night and confirm access with the organising committee before a day is locked.

Industries in Kolkata and what they ask of creators

Food, sweets and FMCG. Rosogolla, mishti doi, sandesh, fish, street rolls and biryani with potato make food the city's strongest creator niche. Large FMCG and food companies are headquartered in the city, and sweet-shop brands live on Puja and Bhai Phonta gifting.

Tea. The city is a hub of the tea trade, with tea auctions and long-established tea brands. Creator work here is tasting, gifting and tea-routine content.

Jewellery and sarees. Bowbazar for jewellery and Gariahat and Burrabazar for sarees and textiles make festive retail a natural fit for fashion and bridal creators. See fashion influencer marketing.

Publishing, books and education. College Street's book market, Presidency University, the University of Calcutta and the International Kolkata Book Fair make education and culture brands visible. See edtech influencer marketing.

IT and services. Salt Lake Sector V and New Town hold IT and services employers, and their workforce responds to career, money and weekend content in English and Bengali.

Healthcare. The city's private hospital sector is large, so health brands are common. Creators giving technical health advice need qualifications stated upfront under ASCI's Addendum II. This is general information, not legal advice.

Adda, bands and food writing: how Kolkata creators sound

Kolkata's content has a recognisable voice. The tradition of adda, long unhurried conversation over tea, shows up in podcasts, café vlogs and storytelling Reels that run longer than the usual 30 seconds. The band and Rabindrasangeet scenes feed a strong music niche, group theatre and film societies feed a culture niche, and football loyalty to Mohun Bagan or East Bengal, along with Eden Gardens for cricket, feeds sport. Food creators here write long captions about the history of a dish as readily as they film it.

For a brand, this means two things. Hard-sell scripts feel foreign, so briefs work better as a point of view than a script, with the product earning a place in a story. And word of mouth carries weight, so creators who return to the same shop or the same neighbourhood are more convincing than those who parachute in for one post.

Puja logistics: a checklist

  • Book by July. Creators with Puja-season availability tend to be booked by August, and the contract should fix a delivery date for each phase.
  • Ship products by early September. Courier and approval turnaround slows around the Puja days, when many offices and delivery staff are on leave.
  • Finish approvals before Shashthi. Drafts that need sign-off during the Puja days will wait.
  • Lock pandal access and crowd safety early. Committees decide who can film, and when.
  • Keep one reserve creator per Puja slot. Autumn rain, illness and crowds all cancel shoots.
  • Prepare Bijoya, Kali Puja and Bhai Phonta assets before Puja starts. The gifting window follows within days.

The Kolkata calendar

Festival dates follow the Bengali and lunar calendars and move each year.

WindowMomentWhat brands do
January to FebruarySaraswati Puja, International Kolkata Book FairStudent brands, books, stationery, yellow-saree campaigns
March to AprilHoli, Poila Boishakh (Bengali new year, 14 or 15 April)New-year sales, haal khata gifting, sweets, jewellery
March to MayIPL matches for Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden GardensSports, beverages, apps
June to JulyRath YatraRegional family brands, sweets
August to OctoberDurga PujaFashion, jewellery, sweets, appliances, travel
October to NovemberKali Puja, Diwali, Bhai PhontaGifting, sweets, home
NovemberKolkata International Film FestivalEntertainment, culture, premium brands
DecemberChristmas on Park Street, year-endDining, hospitality, gifting

Poila Boishakh is the second great retail moment: businesses open new account books, shops run sales and families gift sweets. Bhai Phonta, a couple of days after Kali Puja, is a gifting day for brothers and sisters that favours sweets, jewellery and personal-care brands. A Kolkata plan that stops after Dashami leaves both on the table.

Where Kolkata content gets shot

  • North Kolkata: Kumartuli's idol-makers, the old mansions of Shovabazar and Jorasanko, College Street's book stalls and the Coffee House. Strong for heritage, food and culture, with narrow lanes and crowds.
  • Central Kolkata: Park Street, New Market, Esplanade, the Maidan, Victoria Memorial, Princep Ghat and Eden Gardens. Strong for food, fashion and sport.
  • South Kolkata: Gariahat, Ballygunge, Southern Avenue, Dhakuria Lake, Rabindra Sarobar and Alipore. Strong for family, fitness and lifestyle.
  • Salt Lake and New Town: Sector V's office blocks, the City Centre and Eco Park, a green backdrop in Rajarhat. Strong for careers, tech and weekend content.
  • Howrah: Howrah Bridge, Mullick Ghat's flower market and Belur Math across the river. Strong for travel and culture.

Heritage trams and yellow taxis remain popular B-roll, though tram routes are limited, so we confirm which are running before planning a tram sequence. Museums, Victoria Memorial and temple precincts have their own filming rules.

How we run it in Kolkata

The process on how we work stays the same, and Kolkata sets the dates. Creators are Bengali, cast first by audience city and age, and briefs and scripts are in Bengali with English subtitles for sign-off. For Puja we book creators in June or July and write a delivery date for each phase, plus the disclosure label, into the contract. When a Puja shoot or launch needs a person on site, a strategist travels from Delhi.

What it costs

No dependable Kolkata rate card is published, so we price by tier, niche and rights. Puja campaigns often need several formats per creator, and bundling matters: one published rate card puts a Reel, post and Stories bundle at 1.6 to 2 times the price of a single Reel, and another says bundling usually earns a 20 to 35 percent discount. Kolkata sits in the published metro engagement band of 3 to 4 percent (a vendor estimate, not audited).

DeliverableTypical range per creator
Nano (1K to 10K) Reel₹2,000 to ₹10,000
Micro (10K to 100K) Reel₹8,000 to ₹80,000
Micro Story set₹5,000 to ₹20,000
Micro static or carousel post₹5,000 to ₹50,000
Mid-tier (100K to 500K) Reel₹50,000 to ₹3.5 lakh

Festive content is often reused as ads, so agree usage rights upfront; published cards add 30 to 50 percent for them. See our influencer rates guide.

How Kolkata connects to nearby cities

Bhubaneswar and Guwahati extend a Bengali-region plan into Odisha and the North East, where Bengali speakers form a visible minority in some areas, while Delhi has a large Bengali community, with Chittaranjan Park its best-known pocket. Frequently asked questions

When should a Kolkata brand start planning for Durga Puja?

Start in June or July. Puja shopping begins in August, creator calendars fill from July, and the main window from Mahalaya to Dashami is only about ten days. A good plan has teasers in August, a shopping and gifting wave in September and pandal-hopping content in the Puja days themselves, with Bijoya and Kali Puja content after.

Do you work with Bengali influencers in Kolkata?

Yes. Bengali creators are the base of most Kolkata campaigns, with Hindi and English creators added by audience. We brief and script in Bengali, check audience city split because many Bengali creators have followers across West Bengal and the diaspora, and add subtitles for sign-off. See regional influencer marketing.

How much does an influencer marketing company in Kolkata charge?

Typical structures are creator fees plus a management fee, a fixed campaign fee, or a retainer. Published benchmarks suggest management fees of about 15 to 25 percent of creator spend. For Puja campaigns ask whether bundled formats and usage rights are quoted separately, since both change the total. See the influencer rates guide or the cost calculator.

Do you have an office in Kolkata?

No office in Kolkata; our base is New Delhi. Bengali creators are cast locally, strategy and reporting come from Delhi, and a strategist travels to Kolkata for Puja shoots, launches and meetups, with the cost shown separately. You get one named strategist and a weekly check-in.

How do I choose the best influencer marketing agency in Kolkata?

Bengali scripting and Puja planning are the local tests. Beyond that, ask for audience city and age splits, a sample contract and a sample report. A named strategist matters more than a process slide. Our guide to choosing an influencer marketing agency lists the checks.

Can brands film at Durga Puja pandals with creators?

Usually yes, with permission from the organising committee, and not at peak hours. Pandals get very crowded from Shashthi to Dashami, so creators visit early morning or late night, and any branding inside needs a sponsorship arrangement. We confirm access before a shoot is locked and brief creators on crowd safety.

Can you reach Bengali audiences outside Kolkata?

Yes. Bengali-speaking audiences live across West Bengal, in Delhi's Chittaranjan Park, in Bangalore and Mumbai, and beyond. A Kolkata creator's audience insights show how much sits outside the city. For a Bengali campaign in another city we add a local creator. See micro and nano influencers.
