In short
- Hire UGC creators for hooks, voice, audio, light and product handling. Followers matter only if the video also runs from the creator's own handle.
- Find them in portfolio-first accounts, creator marketplaces, LinkedIn, your own customers and agency networks, then score every portfolio on the same eight criteria.
- Book a paid test of one video with three hooks before a batch. The revision round tells you more than the first edit.
- We found no reliable published India rate card for UGC, so ask every creator to quote the same package and compare cost per usable cut.
To find UGC creators in India, search for people whose portfolios look like the ads you want to run, not for people with big audiences. Check Instagram and YouTube for creators who post ad-style product videos in your category, ask your own customers who already film themselves with your product, and use a creator marketplace or an agency network for volume. Then score each portfolio on the same criteria and pay for a short test before you book a batch.
This post is about hiring, not about whether to use UGC at all. For that decision and the line-by-line rights table, read UGC vs influencer marketing; for the general discovery methods, how to find influencers in India. If you are new to the channel, the complete guide to influencer marketing in India comes first.
What you are hiring for
A UGC video runs from your account, site or listing, so the creator's audience is irrelevant. What decides the result is craft.
| What matters | What to ignore | The exception |
|---|---|---|
| Hook: the first three seconds | Follower count | The video also runs from the creator's handle, as a partnership ad |
| Voice and language fit with your buyer | Niche fame | Health and finance advice needs stated qualifications under ASCI's Addendum II |
| Clean audio and natural light | Expensive kit | None; bad audio sinks an ad |
| Product handling: size, texture, use | Brand logos in the portfolio | None |
| Turnaround and clean delivery | An aesthetic feed | None; late files cost ad days |
Where to find UGC creators
| Source | How to run it | Best for | Watch for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Portfolio-first accounts | Search "UGC creator" with your category and language; open bios that link a portfolio | Creators who market their craft | Portfolios that show the same script on every brand |
| The creators behind ad-style videos | Watch video ads in Meta's public Ad Library for your category; note the style, then look for the creator's handle where an ad is a partnership ad | Finding a proven style | Ads made by studios, not individuals |
| Your own customers | Search tags and Story mentions for people who film themselves with your product | Authentic first batch; low cost | Quality varies; you need written permission to reuse |
| Marketplaces and freelance platforms | Post a short brief or browse portfolios by category | Volume, fast | Every creator needs the same scorecard |
| Professional networks | Search LinkedIn posts for creators sharing portfolio reels | Creators who treat this as a business | Fewer regional-language options |
| Agency networks | Ask for samples before booking | Languages, volume, contracts and payments handled | Ask how creators are scored; ours is the Gully Score |
For regional work, search in the buyer's language first. A Tamil or Marathi query finds creators whose delivery sounds like your buyer's neighbours, which an English query rarely will. Our regional influencer service covers briefing in each language.
Score the portfolio: eight criteria
Open five videos per creator and score each criterion 0 (weak), 1 (acceptable) or 2 (strong). A total of 12 or more out of 16 earns a test.
| # | Criterion | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Hook | The first three seconds give a reason to keep watching: a problem, a surprise or a result |
| 2 | Voice | Sounds like a person, not a script; the language matches your buyer |
| 3 | Audio | Clear speech, no echo, no wind, no music masking words |
| 4 | Light and framing | Face and product both visible; vertical; steady |
| 5 | Product handling | Shows size, texture and use, not just a hand holding a box |
| 6 | Honest delivery | Claims are believable; no over-acting |
| 7 | Range | Can do an unboxing, a testimonial and a demo in different tones |
| 8 | Category fit | Has filmed in your category or a close one |
The Gully Score gives content craft 15 of 100 points because for influencer posts the audience carries more weight. For UGC, craft is the whole job, so this scorecard replaces the audience criteria.
Portfolio red flags
- The same background and script across brands. The creator is selling a template.
- Studio lighting in every clip. If it looks like an ad shoot, you are hiring a production team, and the price will follow.
- One voice-over style on every video. Voice-over can mean the creator is not on camera or that the audio is synthetic. Ask.
- Brand logos with no mention of permission. Check that the creator has the right to show past work.
- No raw footage on request. You will need it for new hooks.
Run a paid test: one video, three hooks
Pay a fixed fee for one video with three alternate openings and the raw footage. Unpaid spec work is common, but it tends to cost you the creators who have paid work. A short test brief fits on one screen: one product truth, three hook options to choose from, 20 to 40 seconds, vertical, captions burned in, delivery in three days.
Judge four things.
| Check | Pass looks like |
|---|---|
| The footage | Clean audio and light in the raw clips, not just the edit |
| The hooks | Three openings that differ in angle, not in wording |
| The revision round | One round of notes comes back fast, with the note actually applied |
| The delivery | Files named by creator and variant, in the ratio and length you asked for |
The revision round is the best predictor of a batch. A creator who takes notes without argument and returns on time will make the next 20 videos easier.
When the creator's handle is involved
Audience stops being irrelevant the moment a video is posted from the creator's account or run from their handle as a creator ad. Then vet them as you would any influencer: run the last 12 posts through the engagement rate calculator, ask for dated insights screenshots as described in how to read influencer audience insights, and score them on the full influencer vetting checklist. Many UGC creators sit in the nano and small micro bands; our guide to finding micro-influencers covers where to look for the ones whose audience also fits.
When you first write to a creator, say what you are buying: a video for your ads, the rights window and the test fee. The wording for paid and barter messages is in influencer outreach message templates.
A brief creators can follow
The longer template is in our influencer campaign brief template. A UGC brief can be shorter, but it must be specific.
Rights to settle before the first shoot
Our UGC vs influencer marketing guide lists every rights term. Three are the ones brands most often miss.
- Exclusivity. Can the creator reuse the same footage or concept for a competitor next week? Name the category and the window.
- Raw footage and edit rights. If you cannot re-cut the hook, you will need a new shoot every time an ad tires.
- Face and voice. Permission to use likeness in other creative needs its own line. A cloned voice or AI avatar of a real creator is a separate matter: ASCI's guidelines on synthetic content, signed on 17 September 2026, require a label where synthetically generated content materially influences consumer decisions, including replicating a real person's likeness or voice, even with consent.
One published guide puts usage rights at +30 to 50% on a base fee. That is a single low-confidence source, but it tells you the line exists and is negotiable. In a 2026 vendor survey, 39.3% of brands put influencer contracts through legal review; for UGC, rights are the part worth reviewing. See influencer contracts in India.
Do not present paid videos as spontaneous customer reviews. The Department of Consumer Affairs' Endorsement Know-hows tell endorsers not to endorse what they have not used, so ask UGC creators to use the product first. This is general information, not legal or tax advice.
Compare quotes like for like
We found no reliable published India rate card for UGC videos, so we do not print a range. Ask every creator to quote the same package, then compare.
| Quote line | Ask each creator |
|---|---|
| Base fee per finished video | Length and format included |
| Hooks and cuts | How many alternate openings and cutdowns are in the fee |
| Revisions | How many rounds; the price after that |
| Raw footage | Included or extra |
| Usage rights | Platforms, paid or organic, months, territory |
| Whitelisting | Priced separately, per 30 days or per campaign |
| Turnaround | Days from product delivery to first draft |
| Tax | Whether the quote includes GST, and PAN for TDS |
Divide the total by the number of usable cuts to get a cost per cut. A creator quoting ₹6,000 with one cut and no raw footage may cost more per cut than one quoting ₹9,000 with four cuts and the raw files.
Size the first batch
Six to ten creators is a workable first batch. The arithmetic is simple: eight creators, two videos each and three hooks per video gives 48 openings to test, from one round of production. Replace the bottom third after the first test. Keep a reserve of two creators in case drafts miss the brief. Our UGC creators service runs batches this way, and our guide to how to measure influencer marketing ROI covers reading hook and hold rates.
Mistakes when hiring UGC creators
- Hiring by followers. They set influencer fees, not UGC quality.
- Paying for edits without the raw footage. You cannot fix a weak hook.
- One creator for every angle. A single voice makes every variant sound alike, so you test creators, not hooks.
- Skipping the audio check. Poor sound is the quickest way to waste ad spend.
- No rights in writing. A video you may not run as an ad has no value.

Frequently asked questions
How do I find UGC creators in India?
Search Instagram and YouTube for portfolio-first accounts in your category, look at the creators behind ad-style product videos in your niche, ask your own customers who already film themselves with your product, and use creator marketplaces or an agency network. Then score each portfolio on hook, voice, audio, light and product handling.
Do UGC creators need followers?
Not when the video runs from your brand account, because you pay to reach the audience. Followers and audience insights matter again if the creator posts the video or if you run it from their handle as a partnership ad. Our UGC creators service explains the difference.
How much does a UGC video cost in India?
We found no reliable published benchmark, so we do not print a range. Price moves with video length, number of hooks and cuts, usage rights, raw footage, language and turnaround. Ask each creator to quote the same package and compare cost per usable cut. The influencer rates guide covers the influencer side.
Should I pay for a test video?
Yes. Unpaid spec work filters out creators who have paid work, which is often the ones you want. Pay a fixed fee for one video with three hooks, judge the footage and the way the creator takes notes, then book a batch from the ones who pass.
What rights do I need from a UGC creator?
At minimum: paid and organic use on named platforms, a duration, edit rights, raw footage and an exclusivity window. Add whitelisting if you will run ads from their handle. Our UGC vs influencer marketing guide has a line-by-line rights table, and the contract guide covers the clauses.
Can I use AI avatars instead of UGC creators?
You can, but ASCI's guidelines on synthetic content, signed on 17 September 2026, require a label where AI-generated content materially influences consumer decisions, including synthetic influencers and replicated likeness or voice. Do not present an avatar as a real customer. Check the current text before you publish.
