In short

  • In 2027 the Bihus fall on Friday 15 January (Magh), Wednesday 14 to Friday 16 April (Bohag, main day 15 April) and Monday 18 October (Kati).
  • Magh Bihu is only 11 weeks away. To go live in January, brief by Monday 16 November 2026; Bohag Bihu in April needs a brief by Monday 15 February 2027.
  • Cast Assamese speakers who live the festival, keep Hindi and English for the diaspora in Delhi, Bengaluru and Pune, and never present Assam's other communities as one audience.
  • An eight-week Bohag Bihu plan with Assamese and diaspora creators costs about ₹7.7 to 8.2 lakh before GST in our example. Regional budgets sit lower than metro ones.

Bihu influencer campaigns work when the creator is Assamese, the language is Assamese and the brand arrives as a guest. Assam keeps three Bihus a year, and the one that moves money is Bohag or Rongali Bihu in April, the Assamese new year. This post is the Bihu slice of our guide to influencer marketing in India, with eleven ideas, 2026 and 2027 dates, a plan, budgets and the rules of respect.

It sits in the regional section of the festival marketing calendar for influencers. Our Guwahati page covers the city, its neighbourhoods and shoot logistics, so this post stays on how to design the campaign.

The three Bihus in 2026 and 2027

Assam's holiday lists on Office Holidays give these dates, and the Drik Panchang listing used for Magh Bihu in 2027 agrees.

BihuSeason and mood20262027
Magh (Bhogali)Harvest feast, community meals and bonfiresWed 14 and Thu 15 JanuaryFriday 15 January
Bohag (Rongali)Assamese new year, spring, dance and new clothesTue 14 to Thu 16 April; main day Wed 15Wed 14 to Fri 16 April; main day Thu 15
Kati (Kongali)A quieter festival of lamps and prayersSunday 18 OctoberMonday 18 October

Bohag Bihu begins on 14 April and runs for seven days, according to Office Holidays. The first day is traditionally Goru Bihu, when cattle are honoured, and the new year itself is the second. Assam publishes its official holiday list each year, so check it before you lock dates.

Three planning facts follow. First, Magh Bihu on Friday 15 January 2027 is only 11 weeks away, so a January campaign must be briefed by Monday 16 November 2026. Second, on 14 and 15 April 2027 Baisakhi, the Tamil new year, Poila Boishakh and Vishu fall on the same two days, so a generic "new year" film would be wrong for every one of them. Third, Kati Bihu on Monday 18 October 2027 is also Karwa Chauth; see our Karwa Chauth playbook.

What audiences do online

In our experience Bohag Bihu is the busiest of the three. In the fortnight before, people shop for the new-year outfit, including the mekhela chador and the gamosa, clean and redecorate the house, and plan food. Bihu dance and song clips peak in the days around it. Families visit elders and give gamosas as gifts. A big share of the audience is away: Assamese students and professionals in Delhi, Bengaluru, Pune and other metros watch, cook and call home.

Magh Bihu is about the feast and the fire. Kati Bihu is lamps at the Tulsi plant and in the paddy fields. Office Holidays notes that it is a quiet festival, so a loud brand film is out of place.

Eleven Bihu campaign ideas

Bohag Bihu and the new year

  1. The Bihu outfit. Assamese fashion creators style the mekhela chador and gamosa at set budgets, with silk claims such as muga and pat checked against the label. See fashion and apparel.
  2. Jolpan and pitha. Food creators make the breakfast of chira, doi and jaggery and the rice-flour sweets, in Assamese. Suits rice flour, jaggery, coconut and oils; see FMCG, food and beverage.
  3. Bihu dance, with credit. Dance troupes and folk musicians perform, are named and are paid. Check licences; see music copyright in influencer content.
  4. The weaver's story. A short film on one handloom weaver, with her consent and a fair fee. Cheap, warm and credible.
  5. Gamosa as a gift. Gifting creators show what to give elders and colleagues in set price bands; see gifting and seeding.
  6. The new-year home. Home creators clean and refresh a room before the festival. Suits paint, appliances and home brands.

Away from home

  1. Bihu away from home. Assamese creators in Delhi, Bengaluru and Pune cook pitha in a rented flat and call home. Suits courier, grocery and telecom brands.
  2. Ghar wapsi. Creators film the journey to Guwahati and beyond. Suits flights, trains and travel and hospitality.

Other Bihus and cross-community

  1. The Magh Bihu feast. Village and town creators film the community meal and bonfire. Fish, duck and pitha carry the table. Plan this separately for January.
  2. Kati Bihu lamps. Quiet Stories from families lighting the Tulsi lamp, with no product in frame. A place for goodwill, not a sale.
  3. Cooking with an Assamese friend. A creator from elsewhere learns an Assamese dish from an Assamese friend, with both on credit and both paid. It builds the bridge without borrowing the festival.

Ideas 7 and 11 are the two brands underbuy. The diaspora is a large, nostalgic and metro-based audience, and cross-community collabs reach beyond it without appropriating anything.

Casting and briefing

  • Assamese first. Cast creators who post in Assamese weekly and know the festival. Write the label in Assamese as well as English; ASCI allows the language of the ad. Have a native reader check spelling, since Assamese has its own letters within a script shared with Bengali.
  • Check the audience. An Assam-based creator may have most followers in Bengaluru, and the reverse. Ask for audience screenshots; see how to read audience insights.
  • Split the plan. One cohort for Assam, one for the diaspora. They shop through different channels and need different ad targeting.
  • Remember Assam's other languages. The Barak Valley is largely Bengali-speaking, and Bodo is spoken widely. Confirm the language before you brief.
  • Brief in Assamese. Send the one-page brief in Assamese and English so no one translates legal lines on the fly. Our regional campaign guide shows the format.

What to measure

Count orders and code redemptions by creator and cohort, so Assam and the diaspora can be compared, plus saves on the food and outfit posts and link taps from Stories in the last week. For food brands, compare units sold in the fortnight before 14 April with a normal fortnight. Watch comments in Assamese closely. A native reader should triage them, because sarcasm and objections do not translate cleanly.

Budget notes

Use the ranges in our influencer rates guide: a nano Reel about ₹2,000 to ₹10,000, a micro Reel ₹8,000 to ₹80,000, a micro Story set ₹5,000 to ₹20,000 and a mid-tier Reel ₹50,000 to ₹3.5 lakh. A 2026 vendor survey reported by Campaign India puts the lowest cost per campaign in tier 3 and 4 cities, ₹35,000 to ₹90,000 against ₹3.8 to 4.5 lakh in metros. It is a vendor estimate, but it is why local Assamese creators often sit in the lower half of each band.

Add about 35 percent for usage rights in our plans, and expect creator-ad rights to add 60 to 120 percent over organic in one published guide. Management fees run about 15 to 25 percent of creator spend in published benchmarks. Courier to Assam and the North East can be slower and costlier than to metros, so confirm reach before you seed. Try the mix in our cost calculator.

Sensitivities and things to avoid

  • Bihu is not Assam's Diwali. Do not compare it to another festival or flatten it into a national "new year".
  • The gamosa is a mark of respect. Do not use it as a costume, a headband gag or a floor prop. Ask the creator how it should appear.
  • Credit the dancers and singers. Bihu performers are community artists. Name them, pay them and never lift a clip.
  • Assam is not one community. Other communities keep their own spring festivals, so do not call every festival Bihu or every Assam audience Assamese.
  • No scenery clichés. Tea gardens and hills as a backdrop for a national script read as tourism copy. Let the creator choose the setting.
  • No alcohol. Keep rice beer and other drinks out of the frame.
  • Floods and earthquakes. Assam is prone to both. If one strikes before the festival, pause scheduled posts and review them.

Disclosure, labels and tax

Under the ASCI influencer guidelines, money, free products, gifts and barter are a material connection, and the label must be upfront and prominent. A Story needs it on the visual, a Reel of 15 seconds or less needs it on screen for at least 3 seconds, and the label may be in English or the language of the ad. The brand shares responsibility and must be able to back its claims, including "handloom" and "pure silk" wording.

Kept gifts count towards the ₹20,000 yearly threshold for 10 percent TDS under section 194R, with exemptions for some small individual creators; see TDS 194R and GST on influencer payments. This is general information, not legal or tax advice.

Frequently asked questions

When is Bihu in 2027?

Assam's holiday list shows Magh Bihu on Friday 15 January 2027, Bohag Bihu on Wednesday 14 to Friday 16 April with the main day on Thursday 15 April, and Kati Bihu on Monday 18 October. In 2026 the dates were 14 to 15 January, 14 to 16 April and Sunday 18 October. Assam publishes its official list each year, so check it.

Which Bihu matters most for brands?

Bohag or Rongali Bihu in April, the Assamese new year, because it brings new clothes, gifts, food, travel and home spending. Magh Bihu in January is a harvest feast that suits food and gifting, and Kati Bihu in October is quiet, with lamps and prayers. See our Guwahati page.

Do we need Assamese-speaking creators for a Bihu campaign?

Yes, for audiences in Assam. Cast creators who speak Assamese in their own content and know the customs, and write the label in Assamese too. Assam also has large Bengali- and Bodo-speaking communities, so confirm the audience's language. Our regional influencer marketing service casts by language.

How early should brands plan a Bohag Bihu influencer campaign?

Eight weeks. For 14 to 16 April 2027, brief on Monday 15 February, book creators by 22 February, approve drafts by 15 March and go live from 29 March. Ramadan, Holi and the cricket season crowd March, so book Assamese creators early.

How much does a Bihu influencer campaign cost?

Published rates are about ₹2,000 to ₹10,000 for a nano Reel, ₹8,000 to ₹80,000 for a micro Reel and ₹50,000 to ₹3.5 lakh for a mid-tier Reel. A 2026 vendor survey reports the lowest cost per campaign in tier 3 and 4 cities. Add rights, ads and a 15 to 25 percent management fee. See influencer rates.

Can non-Assamese creators promote a Bihu campaign?

Only alongside Assamese voices. A creator from elsewhere cooking pitha with an Assamese friend works. A creator wearing a gamosa as a costume, or performing Bihu dance without credit to the community, does not. Brief respect, credit the collaborators and pay them. See how to find regional language creators.
