In short

  • Thiruvonam is Sunday 12 September 2027 and Atham, the first day, is Friday 3 September. Brief ten weeks ahead, which is 4 July, and book Malayalam creators by 20 June.
  • Kerala's holiday run in 2027 is Saturday 11 to Tuesday 14 September, four straight days. Plan travel, sadya and gifting content for it.
  • Cast Malayalam creators and write in Malayalam first. Do not dub Hindi scripts, do not treat Onam as a Hindu-only festival and do not joke about Mahabali.
  • Pause scheduled content if floods or a disaster hit Kerala in the weeks before Thiruvonam.

Onam influencer campaigns work when they are built around the ten days, not the one: a pookalam every morning from Atham, a shopping surge in the final three weeks, and a family sadya on Thiruvonam. The creators must speak Malayalam and live the festival. This post is the Onam slice of our guide to influencer marketing in India, written for brands selling in Kerala and to Malayalis in the Gulf and other cities.

Onam 2027 is 10 months away, which is why a plan made now beats one made in July. The festival calendar for influencers puts it in a crowded September, and our Kochi page gives the ten-week lead time we use.

Onam dates for 2026 and 2027

Day20262027
Atham (day 1, Atthachamayam)Sunday 16 AugFriday 3 Sep
Uthradam (First Onam)Tuesday 25 AugSaturday 11 Sep
ThiruvonamWednesday 26 AugSunday 12 Sep
Avittam (Third Onam)Thursday 27 AugMonday 13 Sep

Dates come from Drik Panchang's 2027 calendar and its 2026 calendar, both set for New Delhi. Onam follows the Malayalam calendar's nakshatras, so confirm against Kerala's own holiday list. Office Holidays lists First Onam on 11 September, Thiruvonam on 12 September and Third and Fourth Onam on 13 and 14 September 2027.

Two things matter for 2027. Thiruvonam falls on a Sunday, but the holidays on either side make a four-day break from Saturday 11 to Tuesday 14 September, so travel home and family content will peak across all four days. And Atham on 3 September is one day before Ganesh Chaturthi on 4 September, per Drik Panchang, which competes for audiences in other states but less in Kerala.

What audiences do online

In our experience, the ten days have a clear shape. Through Atham to Pooradam, people post pookalam photos and plan outfits. In the final week, shopping peaks: kasavu wear, gold, appliances, sweets and travel tickets. On Uthradam and Thiruvonam families cook and eat, and creators are mostly offline except for Stories. On the third and fourth days the content turns to games, outings and the journey back.

The audience is also split. Malayalis in Kerala want local, Malayalam-first content; Malayalis in the Gulf and other metros want nostalgia and gifts to send or carry. A 2026 vendor survey reported by Campaign India says more than 62 percent of creators report receiving more regional-language briefs. Our regional versus national guide explains when to localise.

Ten Onam campaign ideas

Across the ten days

  1. Ten days, ten pookalams. A Malayalam home or craft creator posts a pookalam each morning from Atham to Thiruvonam, with your product in the frame once, not daily. Contract for ten posts and a daily time.
  2. The sadya in one video. Food creators cook the full feast in a single Reel or a long YouTube film. Suits cookware, rice, coconut oil, spices and small appliances; see FMCG, food and beverage.
  3. Sadya on order. Local food creators taste-test caterers and restaurants that deliver a sadya; see restaurants and QSR. Track with a code or a QR.

Shopping and gifting

  1. Kasavu lookbook. Fashion creators style kasavu sarees, set mundus and children's outfits at set budgets; see fashion and apparel.
  2. Gold and gifts. Jewellery and gifting creators feature Onam purchases; read jewellery brands.
  3. Home before Onam. Home creators clean, repaint and buy a new TV or appliance. Suits tech and gadgets and paints.

People and place

  1. The flight home. Gulf-based and metro Malayalam creators film the journey back, the gifts they carry and the first meal. Suits airlines, trains, buses and remittance apps.
  2. Onam at the office. Infopark and campus creators film Onam day at work or college; see LinkedIn and B2B creators for office content.
  3. Onam games and dance. Dance and comedy creators from the community film Thiruvathira, tug-of-war and games.
  4. The weaver and the maker. A short film on one handloom or food maker. Cheap, warm and credible.

Casting and briefing in Malayalam

Cast by lived experience, not by tag. A creator who posts in Malayalam every week, shows a real home and knows the sadya order will carry an Onam post; a creator who is Malayali by name and posts in English will not, unless your buyer is an English-speaking professional in Bengaluru or Dubai.

  • Check the audience first. Ask for audience screenshots showing location and language, because a Kerala creator can have a mostly Gulf audience and the reverse. See how to read audience insights.
  • Brief in Malayalam. Send the one-page brief in Malayalam as well as English, with the claims sheet, so the creator does not translate your legal lines on the fly.
  • Split the plan by audience. One cohort for Kerala, one for the Gulf and one for Malayalis in other metros. They shop differently and the ad targeting differs.
  • Keep the festival, change the product. Give creators a role for the product inside the ritual, such as the sadya, the outfit or the gift, not a generic offer.

What to measure

Count orders by creator code and by cohort, so Kerala, the Gulf and the rest of India can be compared. Look at saves on the sadya and lookbook posts, which show planned purchases, and at link taps in the final week. For food and restaurant brands, count sadya bookings by code or QR. Compare the three weeks before Onam with a normal three weeks, and keep the creators whose audiences bought for Vishu and Christmas, instead of rebuilding the list each festival.

Onam also falls at the end of the monsoon, so plan indoor fallbacks; see monsoon influencer marketing. Our Pongal, Sankranti and Lohri playbook covers the other regional festival with a similar language-first rule.

Budget notes

Use the ranges on our influencer rates guide: a nano Reel about ₹2,000 to ₹10,000, a micro Reel ₹8,000 to ₹80,000, a micro Story set ₹5,000 to ₹20,000, a mid-tier Reel ₹50,000 to ₹3.5 lakh and a mid-tier Story set ₹20,000 to ₹80,000. One published guide says regional-language YouTube channels cost 40 to 60 percent less than Hindi or English ones. That is a single source and about YouTube, so do not assume it for Reels.

The ten-day pookalam series is the line to price carefully, because it is ten deliverables rather than one: ask for a series price and a fixed daily posting time. Add about 35 percent for usage rights in our plans, and expect creator ad rights to add 60 to 120 percent over organic in one published guide. A short exclusivity window covering the final week is worth asking for. Management fees run about 15 to 25 percent of creator spend in published benchmarks, and GST at 18 percent is usually extra. Test tiers in our influencer cost calculator.

Sensitivities and things to avoid

  • Malayalam first. Do not dub Hindi scripts, and do not assume English subtitles solve it. Brief the idea and let the creator write.
  • Onam is for every faith. It is celebrated across communities in Kerala. Do not frame it as Hindu-only, or compare it to Diwali.
  • Mahabali. Do not joke about the legend or caricature him. Ask the creator how they would approach it.
  • The sadya is vegetarian. Keep non-vegetarian dishes off the leaf, and let a creator who serves one show the order of dishes correctly.
  • Do not say "South Indian". Kerala is not Tamil Nadu, Karnataka or Andhra. Use Malayalam, Kerala and Malayali terms.
  • Floods and disasters. If heavy rain or a disaster hits Kerala before Thiruvonam, pause scheduled posts and review them. Never joke about the weather.
  • Homesickness. Gulf-based audiences respond to nostalgia, but do not pressure them into spending on gifts as proof of love.

Disclosure, labels and tax

Under the ASCI influencer guidelines, the label may be in English or in the language of the ad, so a Malayalam post can carry a Malayalam label that an average viewer understands. Free products, fees and codes are a material connection, and the label should appear upfront: on the visual for a Story, on screen for at least 3 seconds in a Reel of 15 seconds or less. The brand shares responsibility and must be able to back its claims, including any "pure coconut oil" or "handloom" wording.

For tax, gifts a creator keeps are a benefit: above ₹20,000 per creator in a financial year, 10 percent TDS under section 194R can apply, with exemptions for some small individual creators. See TDS 194R and GST on influencer payments. This is general information, not legal or tax advice.

Frequently asked questions

When is Onam in 2026 and 2027?

Thiruvonam was Wednesday 26 August in 2026, with Atham, the first of the ten days, on 16 August. In 2027 Atham is Friday 3 September and Thiruvonam is Sunday 12 September, with First Onam on Saturday 11 September and Third Onam on Monday 13 September. Dates follow the Malayalam calendar's nakshatras, so check Kerala's holiday list before locking posts.

How early should brands plan an Onam influencer campaign?

Ten weeks before Thiruvonam. Retail and gifting budgets are spent in the three weeks before it, creators fill up early and Malayalam film and festival content is crowded. For 2027 that means briefing around 4 July and booking by about 20 June. Contracts take a week and posting begins two to three weeks after approval.

Which creators work best for Onam campaigns?

Malayalam-speaking food, fashion, home, travel and comedy creators carry most campaigns, with gold and wedding creators for jewellery and Gulf-based creators for audiences abroad. Pick people who live Onam, not who translate it. See our Kochi page and regional influencer service.

How much does an Onam influencer campaign cost?

Creator fees follow published ranges: about ₹2,000 to ₹10,000 for a nano Reel, ₹8,000 to ₹80,000 for a micro Reel and ₹50,000 to ₹3.5 lakh for a mid-tier Reel. Add rights, creator ads and a management fee of about 15 to 25 percent. One YouTube-only guide says regional channels cost 40 to 60 percent less. See influencer rates in India.

Can brands use English or Hindi scripts for Onam content?

They can, but they underperform. Kerala audiences respond to Malayalam and everyday Manglish, and one 2026 vendor survey says more than 62 percent of creators report receiving more regional-language briefs. Brief the idea and the claims, then let the creator write the script. Our guide to regional versus national campaigns shows when to localise.

What should brands avoid in Onam content?

Avoid treating Onam as a Hindu-only or North Indian-style festival, making jokes about Mahabali or caricaturing him, putting non-vegetarian food on a sadya leaf, using translated scripts and calling Kerala 'South Indian' as if it were one culture. Pause scheduled posts if heavy rain or a disaster hits the state.
