In short

  • Film promotion runs on a calendar: teaser, trailer, release week, week two. Plan creators by phase and expect the biggest spike in the first weekend.
  • One vendor report put creator-led film promotion in 2025 at ₹250 crore or more, with micro and small-to-mid creators behind over 51 percent of posts and engagements. Treat it as one vendor's estimate.
  • For streaming titles, the IT Rules, 2021 ask publishers to strive to show a title's age rating and consumer advice in promotional material. Put the rating in every creator brief.
  • Review creators must watch before they review and carry an ad label. Pay for reach and format, never for a verdict, and fix the embargo time in writing.

Influencer marketing works for films and streaming titles when it follows the release window. A film has a few weeks in which attention counts, a first weekend that matters most and a word-of-mouth week that decides the rest. A series has a premiere night and a binge week. Creators fit each phase differently: meme pages carry the trailer, genre creators carry the mood, review creators carry the verdict, and explainer creators carry the afterlife.

For the channel as a whole, see our complete guide to influencer marketing in India. Film and streaming have no industry page of their own on the site, so start from our industries hub and our product launch campaigns service. Below: the phases, the creators, spoiler and embargo handling, the age-rating rules for streamers, budgets and an example plan. Public numbers on this category come from one vendor, so read them as that vendor's estimate.

What the public numbers say

An influencer-data vendor's report, covered by Storyboard18 on 31 December 2025, estimated creator-led film promotion in 2025 at ₹250 crore or more, across influencers, meme pages, paid UGC and seeding. It counted over 610,000 movie posts and more than 2 billion engagements, and said micro and small-to-mid creators drove over 51 percent of posts and engagements. The vendor added that much creator spend runs through intermediaries, so the true figure is probably higher. It named films such as Chhaava, Coolie, Kantara: Chapter 1 and Dhurandhar as engagement leaders.

The same coverage cites one illustration: ₹1 lakh of creator spend buying 10 to 20 meme-page posts with 500,000 or more organic views. That works out at roughly ₹5,000 to ₹10,000 a post, which is our arithmetic from one data point on meme pages only. It is not a benchmark.

We vet every creator on the Gully Score, and for meme pages add two checks: ownership and the other sponsors on the page. ASCI's 2025-26 report found illegal betting at 54 percent of its influencer violations, so a page that carries betting promotions should not carry your title.

Spoilers, embargoes and clearances

ItemHow we handle it
Early accessReview creators get the title under a written embargo with a date and time. They must watch before they review
Embargo breaksThe contract names a penalty and a takedown time; posting is scheduled, not live-posted
SpoilersThe brief lists what must stay out, such as the twist, the ending or a death
FootageCreators use only stills, trailer cuts and audio the producer has cleared. Camera-phone clips from screenings are out
ApprovalsA 24 to 48 hour review of every draft; late approvals are the main cause of missed windows
CertificationCertification of films and trailers, and what may go online before it, is the producer's legal responsibility; we use only assets the producer's counsel has cleared

Rules for film and OTT

Age ratings on streaming titles

Part III of the IT Rules, 2021 requires publishers of online curated content to classify content as U, U/A 7+, U/A 13+, U/A 16+ or A. It says the publisher must strive to include the classification rating and consumer advice in any print, televised or online promotional or publicity material, and display the rating prominently. The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting's advisory of 18 July 2023 advises publishers to take note of this for their advertisements and promotional material.

The duty sits with the publisher, not the creator. Our practice is to make the rating a mandatory frame in the creator's video or caption, and not to boost A-rated or U/A 16+ content to audiences under 18. That second step is our own policy, not a rule.

Disclosure and reviews

ASCI requires a clear label for a creator with a material connection, and its list includes payment, gifts and trips. A free screening, a premiere invite or a promotional trip counts. The Department of Consumer Affairs' Endorsement Know-hows say not to endorse what you have not used or checked, so a review creator must have watched the title. Pay for the post, never for a verdict, and do not ask for positive-only language.

Claims

"Highest opening", "blockbuster" and "number one" lines in captions are statements of fact. ASCI's Chapter I requires truthful claims, so give creators a source or leave the line out.

Tax on trips and tickets

A promotional trip, hotel stay or premium ticket block given to one creator can pass the section 194R line of ₹20,000 in a year, with 10 percent TDS, as summarised from the CBDT circular. See TDS and GST on influencer payments.

This is general information, not legal or tax advice.

What it costs

Creators quote against the same benchmarks as in every other category; these are asking prices from our influencer rates guide.

One rate source puts entertainment and comedy creators at 0.7 to 0.9 times a beauty baseline, which is low-confidence, so we use the base card. Add about 30 to 50 percent for ad rights. Screening venues, travel and ticket blocks are extra. For regional dubs, one rate card puts regional-language YouTube channels at 40 to 60 percent below Hindi or English ones. See regional vs national influencer campaigns.

Ticket sales and watch hours rarely come back by creator, so compare before-and-after patterns and keep your claims modest. Our guide to brand lift in influencer marketing covers survey methods that fill the gap.

Mistakes we would steer you away from

  • Unlicensed clips. A takedown in release week costs more than a licence.
  • Paying for a verdict. Viewers can tell, and an undisclosed paid opinion is a misleading-advertising risk.
  • A leaky embargo. One early review sets the story.
  • No rating on the asset. Rated content needs its rating shown.
  • Meme pages without checks. Look at ownership and the other sponsors.
  • Late approvals. A missed day is a missed audience.
  • One language. Dubbed releases need creators in each.
  • A big spend on day one only. Week two is where recommendations travel.

Frequently asked questions

How do film producers and OTT platforms use influencers in India?

In phases: meme pages and fan creators for trailers and teasers, genre and review creators around release, regional-language creators for dubbed versions, and explainer creators after release. One 2025 vendor report found micro and small-to-mid creators drove over half the posts and engagements. See our product launch campaigns service for the launch pattern.

Do OTT promotions have to show an age rating?

The IT Rules, 2021 say a publisher of online curated content must strive to include the classification rating and consumer advice in any print, televised or online promotional material, and the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting advised publishers in July 2023 to take note. The duty sits with the publisher, so we put the rating in the creator brief. This is general information, not legal advice.

How much does it cost to promote a film or series with influencers?

Nano creators quote about ₹2,000 to ₹10,000 per Reel, micro creators ₹8,000 to ₹80,000 and mid-tier creators ₹50,000 to ₹3.5 lakh, as asking prices. One rate source puts entertainment creators at 0.7 to 0.9 times a beauty baseline. See our influencer rates guide.

Should an influencer watch the film before reviewing it?

Yes. Consumer Affairs guidance says endorsers should not promote what they have not used or checked, and a creator who reviews unseen content loses credibility fast. Give review creators early access under an embargo, and pay for the post, not the opinion. See our endorsement guidelines explainer.

Do film promotion posts need a disclosure label?

Yes, whenever the creator has a material connection with the producer or platform. ASCI's list includes payment, gifts and trips, so a paid post, a free screening invite or a promotional trip needs a label upfront. Fan posts with no connection need none. See our ASCI influencer guidelines explainer.

How do you measure influencer marketing for a film release?

Use proxies: trailer views, link clicks by creator group to the ticketing or streaming page, saves and shares, audio use for songs and comment sentiment. We know of no published India benchmark that links creator posts to ticket sales or watch hours, so ask your platform what it can share. See influencer marketing KPIs.
