In short
- Pick one primary KPI per goal and treat the rest as diagnostics: cost per 1,000 views for awareness, branded search for consideration, cost per new customer for conversion.
- Write each KPI's formula, data source and window into the brief, or two people will report two different numbers for the same campaign.
- No published India benchmark exists for CPM, CPV or conversion rates on creator content. Work back from your margin to set a target, then test it in a first wave.
- Rank creators on cost per result, not on likes, follower gains or summed reach, which counts overlapping audiences more than once.
The right KPI for an influencer campaign depends on its goal. For awareness, use cost per 1,000 views and views per follower. For consideration, use save rate, share rate and branded search. For conversion, use cost per order and cost per new customer. For creator ads, use hook rate, hold rate and cost per purchase against your own creatives. Choose one primary KPI per goal, write its formula in the brief, and treat the rest as diagnostics.
This is the full KPI dictionary behind our guide to measuring influencer marketing ROI, which covers the ROI formula and the tracking set-up. If you are planning a campaign from scratch, start with the complete guide to influencer marketing in India.
One primary KPI, three diagnostics
A campaign judged on ten numbers is judged on none. For each goal pick one primary KPI, the number that decides whether the campaign worked, and up to three diagnostics that explain why. Write all of them into the brief with the formula, the tool that reports them and the window, for example 30 days from posting.
Most Indian brands skip this step. In a 2026 vendor survey covered by Campaign India, only 13.3% of brands tied influencer work to formal revenue targets, and 46.4% judged performance campaign by campaign. A KPI chosen after the results arrive is not a KPI. It is a story.
| Goal | Primary KPI | Diagnostics |
|---|---|---|
| Awareness | Cost per 1,000 views | Views per follower, share of views in target geography, average watch time |
| Consideration | Branded search lift | Save rate, share rate, purchase-intent comments |
| Conversion | Cost per new customer | Link click-through, landing-page conversion, new-customer share |
| Creator ads | Cost per purchase against your brand-made ads | Hook rate, hold rate, click-through |
| Retention | Repeat purchase rate of customers the campaign won | Payback period, 90-day contribution per customer |
Awareness KPIs
Awareness KPIs measure delivery and the price of attention. They say nothing about intent, so never use them to claim sales.
| KPI | Formula | Where to read it | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Views | Video views in the window | Creator insights screenshot | Platforms define a view differently; compare within one platform |
| Reach | Unique accounts that saw the post | Creator insights | Not visible publicly |
| Cost per 1,000 views | Total creator cost ÷ views × 1,000 | Your tracker | Use one cost basis for every creator |
| Views per follower | Median views of the last 10 posts ÷ followers | Public count plus insights | A mean flatters a creator with one viral post |
| Non-follower share | Views from non-followers ÷ total views | Insights | Shows whether the content travelled beyond the base |
| Target-geography share | Views from target cities or states ÷ total views | Audience insights | Views from the wrong city do not sell |
A micro creator paid ₹30,000 whose Reel gets 52,000 views costs ₹577 per 1,000 views. The same fee for 20,000 views costs ₹1,500. That gap is the reason to ask for the median views of recent posts before you agree a fee, and to cross-check it against the rates guide.
We found no published India benchmark for the cost per 1,000 views of sponsored creator content, so we do not quote one. Your own paid social is the comparator: compare the creator's figure with what you pay per 1,000 impressions for the same audience. The creator does not have to be cheaper, because the content can also serve as an ad, but a gap of several times needs a reason.
Consideration KPIs
Consideration KPIs show whether people moved closer to buying without buying yet. They saved the post, sent it to a friend, visited the profile or asked about price.
| KPI | Formula | Where to read it |
|---|---|---|
| Save rate | Saves ÷ views × 100 | Creator insights |
| Share rate | Shares ÷ views × 100 | Creator insights |
| Profile visit rate | Profile visits from the post ÷ views × 100 | Creator insights |
| Story link tap rate | Link taps ÷ Story views × 100 | Story insights, link click report |
| Purchase-intent comment rate | Comments asking price, size, shade or where to buy ÷ total comments | Hand-tag the first 100 comments |
| Branded search lift | Branded search clicks in the window ÷ baseline, minus 1 | Search Console, with a pre-campaign baseline |
Saves and shares are usually a stronger sign of interest than likes, but they appear only in the creator's own insights. Ask for them in the brief and agree a screenshot format. We found no India benchmark for save rate, so build your own: take the median across the creators you have booked so far, then judge new creators against it. Engagement-rate ranges by tier are in our Instagram engagement rate benchmarks.
Branded search is the best single read on consideration because it is behaviour, not opinion. The method for reading it properly, with baselines and controls, is in our guide to brand lift in influencer marketing.
Conversion KPIs
Conversion KPIs follow the funnel from view to click to session to order to new customer. Measure every step, because the weakest step tells you what to fix.
| KPI | Formula | Where to read it |
|---|---|---|
| Link click-through | Tracked clicks ÷ views (Reels) or Story views | UTM report, link tool |
| Landing-page conversion | Orders ÷ sessions from the creator's UTM | GA4, store dashboard |
| Code orders | Orders carrying the creator's code | Store discount report |
| Cost per order | Total cost ÷ tracked orders | Your tracker |
| New-customer share | First-time buyers ÷ tracked orders | Store or CRM |
| Cost per new customer (CAC) | Total cost ÷ new customers acquired | Your tracker |
| Net revenue | Order value minus discount, returns and cancellations | Store dashboard |
Cost per order and cost per new customer are different numbers, and the gap between them is where many campaigns mislead. The worked break-even maths is in our post on influencer cost per acquisition. The set-up for each tracking route is in UTM links for influencer campaigns and tracking influencer sales with discount codes.
Creator-ad KPIs
When a creator post runs as a partnership ad from your account, the KPIs become creative KPIs. In a 2026 vendor survey, 76.6% of brands said they had run partnership ads with influencers, and 23.3% did so regularly, so most teams will meet these numbers sooner or later.
| KPI | Formula | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Hook rate | Views past 3 seconds ÷ impressions | The first-frame test |
| Hold rate | Views reaching a later point, such as 15 seconds ÷ views past 3 seconds | Fix which point counts as "hold" |
| Click-through rate | Clicks ÷ impressions | Compare within one ad set |
| Cost per purchase | Ad spend ÷ purchases | The decision metric |
Judge a creator ad against your brand-made ad in the same ad set, with the same audience and window. Our creator ads and whitelisting service is built around that comparison.
Retention KPIs
If the goal is customers who stay, the campaign is not finished at the first order. Track repeat purchase rate (customers who reorder within 90 days ÷ customers the campaign won), 90-day contribution per customer (total contribution from the cohort ÷ customers) and payback period (months until the cohort's cumulative contribution equals the campaign cost). All three need the order record to carry the source, which is why the code or UTM must be written to the order.
Creator-level KPIs: who to book again
Campaign KPIs say whether the plan worked. Creator KPIs say who to rebook.
| KPI | Formula | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Cost per result | Creator cost (plus rights) ÷ tracked orders, installs or leads | The ranking number |
| Delivery against forecast | Views delivered ÷ views the creator forecast | Whether their promise held |
| On-time posting | Posts live on the agreed date ÷ posts agreed | Reliability |
| Approval rounds | Revisions needed before approval | Production cost |
| Disclosure pass | Posts with a clear, upfront label ÷ posts | Compliance |
Do not rank creators on cost per result until each has enough conversions for the number to mean something. The sample-size reasoning is in the CPA post.
Setting a target when no benchmark exists
We found no published India benchmark for CPM, CPV or conversion rates on sponsored creator content. Three methods replace one.
1. Work back from the business goal. This example uses placeholder rates; swap in your own.
| Step | Working | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Target new customers | Goal | 500 |
| Allowable cost per new customer | From your margin | ₹600 |
| Creator budget | 500 × 600 | ₹3,00,000 |
| Sessions needed | 500 ÷ 2.5% landing-page conversion | 20,000 |
| Views needed | 20,000 ÷ 1% click-through | 20,00,000 |
| Views per Reel from 12 creators | 20,00,000 ÷ 12 | about 1,67,000 |
Twelve micro Reels at ₹25,000 each fit the budget, since ₹25,000 sits inside the ₹8,000 to ₹80,000 micro range. But 1,67,000 views per Reel is a lot to ask of a micro creator. A 40,000-follower account whose Reels average one view per follower, a strong result, delivers about 40,000 views, roughly a quarter of what the plan needs. The arithmetic shows the target is out of reach before a rupee is spent. Raise the budget, accept a higher cost per customer or lower the target.
2. Use your own paid social as the baseline. What you pay per 1,000 impressions and per purchase on the same audience is the best available yardstick. Creator content should beat it on engaged views or purchases, or justify the premium with assets you can reuse.
3. Make wave one the benchmark. Run 10 to 15 creators across two tiers, take the median of each KPI, and set wave two's target at that median. Tighten by creator from there. Our influencer cost calculator helps size the first wave.
Example scorecard (made-up numbers)
This is how a one-page KPI scorecard for a hypothetical snack brand's festive campaign could look. The targets and results are invented to show the layout.
| Goal | KPI | Target | Actual | Status |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Awareness | Cost per 1,000 views | ₹550 | ₹610 | 11% over |
| Awareness | Target-city share of views | 60% | 54% | Under |
| Consideration | Save rate | 1.5% | 1.9% | Ahead |
| Conversion | Landing-page conversion | 2.5% | 2.1% | Under |
| Conversion | Cost per new customer | ₹600 | ₹690 | 15% over |
| Creator ads | Cost per purchase, creator ad vs brand ad | 0.9x | 0.8x | Better |
| Retention | 90-day repeat rate | 18% | Open | Check at day 90 |
Read it from the top: attention cost slightly too much and reached too few target cities, interest was strong, the landing page underperformed and customers cost 15% more than planned. The creator ads beat the brand ads, so the next wave moves more budget into them. That is a decision, not a number.
KPIs to treat with suspicion
- Follower gains. A collaboration that adds followers has not necessarily added buyers.
- Likes on their own. Cheap to inflate and rarely tied to sales. Marketers in a 2025 Kantar-backed study, as MediaNews4u reported, rated engagement rate (39%) and content quality (36%) above reach as indicators of performance, which is a view about priorities, not proof of sales.
- Summed reach. Adding each creator's reach counts overlapping audiences twice. Report views, which add up, or label reach as non-unique.
- Earned media value. A made-up price on a real number. Our post on earned media value shows why and what to use instead.
- Reported ROAS with no margin. Compare it with break-even first, as the ROI guide explains.
Common mistakes
- Setting KPIs after the results. Fix them in the brief.
- Mixing windows. A 7-day number and a 30-day number are not comparable.
- Comparing creators on different bases. Include usage rights and fees the same way for everyone.
- Using one KPI for every campaign. A launch and a sale need different primary KPIs.
- Skipping the source on the order. If the order does not carry the code or UTM, retention cannot be traced.
If you want KPIs, targets and tracking built into your creator plan, send us a brief. Our performance influencer marketing service is organised around cost per result, and our how we work page shows where reporting sits in the process.

Frequently asked questions
Which KPIs should I track for an influencer campaign?
Match them to the goal. Awareness: cost per 1,000 views, views per follower and target-geography share. Consideration: save rate, share rate and branded search. Conversion: cost per order, cost per new customer and landing-page conversion. Creator ads: hook rate, hold rate and cost per purchase. Retention: repeat purchase rate.
What is the single most important influencer marketing KPI?
For a sales campaign it is cost per new customer, compared with what a new customer is worth to you. For an awareness campaign it is cost per 1,000 views from your target audience. No KPI is best in general, which is why the goal has to be fixed before the campaign starts.
How do I calculate cost per 1,000 views for an influencer?
Divide the total creator cost by the views and multiply by 1,000. A ₹30,000 Reel with 52,000 views costs about ₹577 per 1,000 views. Use the same cost basis for every creator, and compare the result with your own paid social cost, since we found no India benchmark for sponsored creator content.
What are hook rate and hold rate?
Hook rate is the share of people who started watching a creator video and kept going past the first three seconds. Hold rate is the share of those who reached a later point, such as 15 seconds. Teams define them slightly differently, so fix your definition and use it for every creator ad.
How many KPIs should one influencer campaign have?
One primary KPI and up to three diagnostics for each goal. A campaign with two goals can carry two sets, but more than that blurs the verdict. Everything else can sit in the report as context. See our report template for where each number goes.
How do I set influencer KPI targets without benchmarks?
Work backwards: start from the number of customers you want and the cost per customer your margin allows, then convert through your own click-through and conversion rates to the views you need. Check that the creators you can afford can plausibly deliver those views. Then use your first wave as the benchmark.
Are likes and followers useful KPIs?
Only as screening signals. Likes and follower gains are cheap to report and rarely connect to sales. Use them to shortlist, then judge the campaign on views, saves, clicks and orders. Our engagement rate benchmarks show how to read engagement properly.
