In short
- Fix the listing before you send traffic. Images, price, reviews, delivery promise and variants decide whether a creator's audience buys. A strong Reel on a weak listing wastes the fee.
- Track with a time-boxed lift against a baseline in your seller dashboard, plus a unique coupon or link per creator where your marketplace allows it. Confirm what your dashboard shows before promising creators a code.
- Rule 6 of the Consumer Protection (E-Commerce) Rules, 2020 bars a marketplace seller from posing as a consumer to post reviews. Never ask creators to post as ordinary buyers on your listing.
- From 1 January 2027 amended e-commerce rules define a prior price as the lowest price in the 30 days before a reduction is announced. Check any 'was ₹X' line in a creator script against your own price history.
A creator controls the first click. Your listing controls the second. For a seller whose sales happen on a large marketplace, that is the whole problem: a viewer sees a Reel, leaves the app, lands on a page that shows your product beside rivals' ads, and decides in seconds. Influencer marketing works for marketplace sellers when the listing is ready for that moment and when you can tell afterwards whether creator traffic changed your sales.
The channel itself is covered in our complete guide to influencer marketing in India; this post is about the case where the sale happens on someone else's shelf. Most marketplace sellers are small D2C businesses, so read it with our page on influencer marketing for D2C brands. We are not a marketplace partner and this post does not describe any marketplace's own programmes, fees or policies. Read your own seller terms. Below: how selling on a marketplace changes the plan, a listing checklist, creators to cast, tracking, the rules, budgets and an example plan.
What changes when you do not own the checkout
| Your own website | A marketplace listing | |
|---|---|---|
| Who sees the buyer's data | You | Mostly the marketplace |
| Attribution | A tagged link and a code are enough | Limited; depends on your dashboard and account |
| What the visitor sees next | Only your brand | Your product, rival products, sponsored listings |
| Reviews | Yours to collect within the law | Shared across the listing and held to the marketplace's rules |
| Price comparison | Slow | One scroll |
| Who sets the rank | You, through SEO | The marketplace's search, which sales can move |
So the plan changes in three ways. The listing gets as much attention as the Reel. Measurement uses lift against a baseline, not only codes. And the brief avoids anything that looks like a review written for you.
Fix the listing before you send traffic
Check each item on the day before the first post goes live.
| Element | The test |
|---|---|
| Title and variants | A first-time viewer can tell sizes, colours and pack counts apart without opening a second page |
| Images and video | The main image matches what the creator shows; there is a demonstration video, ideally UGC-style |
| Price and offer | The price is stable for the wave and the "was" price is real |
| Delivery | The promise holds in the cities your creators' audiences live in |
| Reviews | Rating and recent review themes are acceptable; if the latest negatives mention one defect, fix it first |
| Questions and answers | The ten questions viewers will ask are answered |
| Stock | Depth covers a surge, not a normal week |
| Shared listing | Check whether other sellers share your listing; creator traffic may buy from them |
| Returns | You know the return reasons and rate before the wave |
If the listing fails two or more of these, the creator fee is better spent on UGC videos and listing repair first. Our service on UGC videos for ads makes the demonstration clips.
Who we cast
| Creator type | Content | Best for | Watch for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Deal and haul creators | "Finds under a budget", monthly hauls | Price-led products | Deal audiences return more and are loyal to price, not brand |
| Product demo and review creators | Honest tests, comparisons | Appliances, electronics, tools | Do not script the verdict |
| Niche enthusiasts | Kitchen, home organisation, fitness, hobby | Considered purchases | Smaller audiences, higher trust |
| Regional-language creators | Reviews in the local language | Tier 2 and 3 buyers | Delivery reach in the creator's region |
| UGC creators | Product videos you own and run as ads | Listing video and creative | The creator's audience size does not matter; rights do |
One 2026 industry survey, a vendor estimate, put typical engagement in tier 3 and 4 cities at 4.5 to 5.5 percent, against 3 to 4 percent in metros, at a lower cost per campaign. See regional vs national influencer campaigns for the trade-off.
Tracking without your own site
| Method | How it works | Strength | Limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Time-boxed lift | Compare daily page views and units ordered with the 14 days before the wave | Works on any marketplace that shows these figures | Noisy if a sale event or ad burst overlaps |
| Unique coupon per creator | A seller coupon with the creator's name, where the marketplace supports it | Direct attribution | Not always available; codes leak to deal sites |
| Tagged link through your own redirect | Creator links to a short link you control, which forwards to the listing | You count clicks by creator | Counts clicks, not sales |
| Account-level tools | Ask your account manager whether external-traffic attribution is open to your account | Closest to a real answer | Availability and eligibility vary; do not assume |
| Post-purchase question | Where you have a channel to the buyer within the marketplace's rules, ask how they found you | Direct voice | Low response rate |
The design that works is a clean window. Pick 14 days of baseline, run the creator wave for two to three weeks, and do not run your own sale event on top of it. Compare each creator's days against baseline and look at the lift in units and in the page-view-to-order ratio. Our guides on tracking influencer sales with discount codes and influencer marketing attribution explain the logic.
Rules that matter for marketplace sellers
Reviews and ratings
Rule 6(2) of the Consumer Protection (E-Commerce) Rules, 2020, notified on 23 July 2020, says no seller on a marketplace shall falsely represent itself as a consumer and post reviews about goods or services or misrepresent their quality or features. Rule 6(1) bars unfair trade practices in the course of the offer on the platform "or otherwise". The Bureau of Indian Standards' conformity scheme for IS 19000:2022, its standard on online consumer reviews, lists among the problems sellers using consumers to write positive reviews and punishing negative ones.
Our practice follows. We do not brief creators to post as ordinary buyers on your listing, and we do not pay for reviews. A creator's own honest video on their own channel is a different thing, and it carries an advertising label. Paying a third party to post as a buyer looks like the same trick done by another hand, in our reading, so ask your lawyer. Read your marketplace's review policy as well.
Disclosure
ASCI requires a clear label on a creator post whenever there is a material connection, and holds the advertiser answerable for the claims. The 2023 dark-patterns guidelines define a disguised advertisement as an advertisement posing as other content, such as user-generated content, and say that for content posted by a seller or advertiser on a platform, the responsibility for disclosing it is an advertisement lies with that seller or advertiser. Our ASCI explainer lists the labels.
False urgency
The same guidelines list false urgency as a dark pattern: falsely stating or implying scarcity to push an immediate purchase, including saying quantities are more limited than they are, or describing a sale as an exclusive, time-limited offer when it is not. A creator line such as "only three left" must be true on the day, and a "creator price" must exist.
Price claims
A PIB release of 10 September 2026 says the amended E-Commerce Rules, in force from 1 January 2027, require a price reduction to show the reduced and the prior price, with the prior price defined as the lowest price in the 30 days before the announcement. They also require sponsored listings to be clearly identified. The rules are drafted for e-commerce entities, so ask your lawyer how far they reach seller content. A sensible practice is to make any "was ₹X" line in a creator script match your own 30-day low.
Tax on product
Product sent to creators is a benefit under section 194R, with 10 percent TDS once the total to one person passes ₹20,000 in a financial year, as summarised from the CBDT circular. See TDS and GST on influencer payments.

What it costs
Figures here are asking prices, drawn from the benchmarks in our influencer rates guide.
| Tier | Instagram Reel | Story set | Role in a marketplace plan |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nano (1K to 10K) | ₹2,000 to ₹10,000 | ₹1,000 to ₹5,000 | UGC-style listing videos, local demos |
| Micro (10K to 100K) | ₹8,000 to ₹80,000 | ₹5,000 to ₹20,000 | The core: demo and niche creators |
| Mid-tier (100K to 500K) | ₹50,000 to ₹3.5 lakh | ₹20,000 to ₹80,000 | One anchor for a category moment |
Add about 30 to 50 percent for ad rights. If a creator's Reel runs as a partnership ad pointing to your listing, see our post on Instagram partnership ads setup. Our creator ads and whitelisting service covers the media side.
Metrics that matter
| Metric | How to capture it | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Units ordered per day against baseline | Seller dashboard | The core lift measure |
| Page views per day | Seller dashboard | Shows traffic the creators sent |
| Page-view-to-order ratio | Units divided by page views | If views rise and the ratio drops, the listing or the audience match is off |
| Coupon redemptions by creator | Marketplace coupon report, if available | Best direct attribution |
| Link clicks by creator | Your redirect's counts | Counts clicks, not sales |
| Return rate | Seller dashboard, before and after | Deal audiences return more |
| Cost per extra unit | Creator spend divided by units above baseline | Needs a clean baseline |

Mistakes we would steer you away from
- Sending traffic to a shared listing. Another seller may take the sale.
- A stock-out. You pay for demand you cannot serve.
- Creators posing as buyers. It risks Rule 6 and your marketplace's own sanctions.
- A sale event on top of the wave. You will not know what caused the lift.
- Paying for views. The listing needs orders, so judge on lift and coupons.
- An unreal "was" price. Check it against your own price history.
- Ignoring returns. A deal-led audience returns more, which eats the margin.
- Skipping the label. Paid creator posts need an ASCI label on the creator's account.
If your products sell in minutes through delivery apps, see influencer marketing for quick-commerce brands. Pet brands often sell on both channels, as in influencer marketing for pet brands, and gear and nutrition sellers will find more in influencer marketing for sports brands. Before the festive rush, read sale-season influencer marketing. Every creator we propose is scored on the Gully Score. Tell us about your listing and category in a brief, and we will return a plan built around a baseline and a lift test.

Frequently asked questions
Does influencer marketing work for sellers on large marketplaces?
Yes, when the listing is ready and you can measure lift. Creators create demand and trust; the listing converts it. Without your own checkout you cannot see who came from whom, so plan a baseline and time-box each creator wave. See our page on influencer marketing for D2C brands for the wider model.
How do I track sales from influencers when I sell on a marketplace?
Compare daily page views and units ordered in your seller dashboard against the 14 days before the wave, use a unique seller coupon per creator if your marketplace supports one, and send creators through a tagged link to the listing so you can count clicks. Ask your account manager whether an external-traffic tool is open to your account. See UTM links for influencer campaigns.
Can I ask influencers to leave reviews on my marketplace listing?
We do not brief creators to do so. Rule 6(2) of the Consumer Protection (E-Commerce) Rules, 2020 bars a marketplace seller from falsely representing itself as a consumer to post reviews or misrepresenting a product's features. Paying someone else to post as a buyer looks like the same trick, in our reading. Ask your lawyer and read your marketplace's review policy.
Should marketplace sellers pay creators a flat fee or per sale?
Most plans use a flat fee, with a bonus tied to a measurable result such as coupon redemptions. Per-sale pay needs reliable tracking, which marketplaces do not always give. Where tracking is weak, pay for the content and judge lift separately. See our performance influencer marketing service.
How much does influencer marketing cost for a marketplace seller?
Nano creators quote about ₹2,000 to ₹10,000 per Reel and micro creators about ₹8,000 to ₹80,000, as asking prices. UGC-style product videos from nano creators cost a fraction of that. Ad rights add about 30 to 50 percent. See the influencer rates guide for every tier.
Do creators need to disclose a post that links to my marketplace listing?
Yes, when you pay them or give them product. ASCI requires an upfront label, and the 2023 dark-patterns guidelines put the responsibility for disclosing that seller content is an advertisement on the seller or advertiser. Our ASCI influencer guidelines explainer lists the labels.
