In short
- Cast pet parents who use the product on their own animal. A real reaction in the first seconds is the proof, and Consumer Affairs guidance asks endorsers not to promote what they have not used.
- Food, treats and litter are repeat-purchase products, so judge a campaign on second orders at 30 and 60 days, not on first-day sales.
- Vets, breeders and shelters sit under separate rules. Never brief a creator to promote the sale of animals, and ask a vet-creator's State Veterinary Council before they front a brand.
- Pet creators are mostly nano and micro. A launch with 20 to 40 creators and 60 days of partnership ads fits most D2C budgets.
Influencer marketing works for pet brands when the creator's own animal is the proof. A pack of dog treats cannot tell a buyer whether the dog will eat them; a Reel can, in three seconds, with no acting. Pet content also shows up daily on feeds that already belong to the right buyer, so the plan is less about reach and more about trial, trust and the reorder a month later.
This post goes one level deeper than our complete guide to influencer marketing in India. Most pet brands are small D2C businesses, so read it alongside our page on influencer marketing for D2C brands. Below: the four kinds of pet brand, the creators to cast, formats that prove a product, the vet and animal rules, budgets and an example plan.
Four kinds of pet brand, four plans
The product decides how you measure. This framework comes from how we plan such campaigns, not from published data.
| Kind of brand | How the owner decides | Reorder cycle | Creator's job | What to measure |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Food, treats, litter | Slowly: vet advice, breeder habit, whether the pet accepts it | Monthly or faster | Trials, switch diaries, honest reactions | Second orders, subscriptions |
| Accessories, beds, toys | Quickly, often as a gift | Occasional | Hauls, durability tests | Orders by code, returns |
| Grooming, hygiene, supplements | Cautiously: claims worry owners | Irregular | Routine content with no health promises | Orders, enquiries, complaint rate |
| Services: grooming, boarding, trainers, pet cafes, adoption drives | Locally, on safety and trust | Recurring | Visits and walkthroughs in one city | Bookings, footfall |
A food brand that is judged on first-day sales will look weak and be strong. A toy brand judged on repeat rate will look weak because toys are not reordered monthly.
Who we cast
| Creator type | Content | Best for | Watch for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dog parents with a breed community | Daily routines, breed-specific tips | Food, treats, harnesses | Confirm the audience is owners, not just fans of a cute dog |
| Cat parents | Short indoor routines, litter and play | Litter, food, scratchers | Smaller supply; cat audiences react differently from dog audiences |
| Trainers and behaviourists | Cue training, first-month plans | Training aids, treats | Keep claims to training, not medical outcomes |
| Rescue and adoption creators | Adoption stories, fostering diaries | Starter kits, care products | Cause content needs a light hand; do not let a promotion feel like an ad inside a rescue |
| Pets with their own accounts | The pet is the character | Any category | The contract is with the human owner, and the post still needs the label |
| Family and first-time-owner creators | "Our first month with a puppy" | Starter kits, gifting | Make sure the pet is theirs, not a loan for the shoot |
| Pet-friendly places creators | Cafes, stays and parks | Services | Local audiences only |
We vet pet creators on the Gully Score with a few extras. Scroll back a year to check the same animal appears across posts. Read the comments for owner questions about food and sizes, which shows an audience that buys. Look at how the creator treats the animal on camera: costumes in the heat, forced tricks and stressed pets are a brand-safety problem.
Formats that prove a pet product
- The first-bite Reel. Unedited pour and sniff in the first three seconds, then the eat. If the dog walks away, the honest version is still useful, and a creator who shows it earns trust.
- The seven-day switch diary. Stories each day, with a gradual change from the old food to the new. Send enough product for the full week, or the diary cannot be shot.
- The thirty-day durability test. For toys, beds and chew products. Day-one and day-thirty photographs beat any claim.
- The starter kit. For first-time owners: a budget, a list and what to skip. These rank well in YouTube search, where new owners look for guides.
- The cupboard tour. A creator shows the whole routine, with your product as one item. Less direct, more believable.
- The local service visit. A grooming slot or a boarding tour, filmed with the staff named.
Reels and YouTube Shorts carry the demonstration; longer YouTube videos carry comparisons. For cities beyond the metros, regional-language creators reach owners who ask in Tamil, Telugu or Bengali, not English.
The buyer journey
| Moment | What the owner does | Content that helps |
|---|---|---|
| A new pet arrives | Searches for everything, asks the vet, buys a starter kit | Starter-kit lists, first-month diaries |
| The pack is nearly empty | Reorders the same thing or tries another | Switch diaries, trial packs |
| Dissatisfaction | Pet refuses food or the toy breaks in a day | Honest comparisons |
| A health worry | Goes to the vet, not to a creator | Nothing from you; do not try to enter here |
| A gifting moment | Birthday, adoption anniversary, festival | Gift bundles |
The sale usually happens on a marketplace, a quick-commerce app, a pet shop or your own site. If most of your orders are on a marketplace, read our post on influencer marketing for marketplace sellers; for snacks and treats that sell in minutes, see influencer marketing for quick-commerce brands.
Rules and cautions specific to pets
Use it before you promote it
The Department of Consumer Affairs' Endorsement Know-hows, released on 20 January 2023, say endorsers should not promote what they have not personally used or done due diligence on. For pet brands that means a trial period before the Reel. If the pet refuses the product, the brief should allow a no-post outcome.
Claims and labels
ASCI's influencer guidelines require a clear label whenever a creator has a material connection, which includes free product. ASCI Chapter I also requires claims to be truthful and material facts to be disclosed. Words such as "vet recommended", "grain-free", "complete nutrition" and "hypoallergenic" need backing from you before the script is written. Pet-food standards and labelling are a manufacturing matter, so this post covers only the marketing side.
Vets as creators
The Veterinary Council of India's Code of Ethics Regulations, 1992 are a scanned document, so this is our reading. The advertising clause treats soliciting clients through publicity that projects a vet as superior as unethical, says a vet should not let others use their name in publicity through lay channels that invites attention to their skill or leads to self-aggrandisement, and allows limited formal announcements. Another clause bars gifts, commissions or bonuses for referring clients. A vet who fronts a paid brand post may be exposed. Ask the vet's State Veterinary Council, and keep vet voices out of claims about treatment. For the human-doctor equivalent, see influencer marketing for healthcare clinics.
Animals for sale
An Animal Welfare Board of India circular of 28 December 2023 says the Animal Husbandry Department and State Animal Welfare Boards are authorised to register all dog breeding establishments and pet shops under the Dog Breeding and Marketing Rules, 2017 and the Pet Shop Rules, 2018. We do not brief creators to promote the sale of puppies or kittens, and we ask any breeder, shop or shelter partner for proof of registration or authority.
Animals on a commissioned shoot
A creator filming their own pet at home is one thing. A produced ad film with hired animals is another. The Animal Welfare Board's self-declaration form for producers of a "Film / Ad Film / TV-serial" refers to the Performing Animals (Registration) Rules, 2001. We found no board guidance on creator Reels, so for anything beyond a creator's own animals, ask your lawyer whether permission applies.
This is general information, not legal advice.
What it costs
These are asking prices from the benchmarks behind our influencer rates guide.
| Tier | Instagram Reel | Story set | Role in a pet plan |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nano (1K to 10K) | ₹2,000 to ₹10,000 | ₹1,000 to ₹5,000 | Trials and local owner circles |
| Micro (10K to 100K) | ₹8,000 to ₹80,000 | ₹5,000 to ₹20,000 | The core: breed communities, trainers |
| Mid-tier (100K to 500K) | ₹50,000 to ₹3.5 lakh | ₹20,000 to ₹80,000 | Breed and city anchors |
Add about 30 to 50 percent for ad rights and about the same for 30-day exclusivity against a rival food brand. One booking platform's note calls lifestyle categories commoditised, so we price pet creators from the base rate card, not a niche premium. The product itself is a cost: kits sent as barter are a benefit under section 194R, valued at fair market value, with 10 percent TDS once the total to one person passes ₹20,000 in a financial year. A bag of treats will not reach that line; a pet fountain or a GPS tracker for a larger creator might. See our barter collaboration guide.
Metrics that matter for pet brands
| Metric | How to capture it | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Second orders by code | Unique code per creator, reviewed at 30 and 60 days | The real test for consumables |
| Subscription sign-ups | Tagged link to the subscribe page | Best signal of a won customer |
| Save and share rate | Platform insights | Starter kits and diaries get saved |
| Comment questions | Read them: size, ingredients, where to buy | Shows intent and gaps in your listing |
| Complaints and returns | Customer care log, by code | Catches a bad creator match early |
| Engagement rate | Platform insights against the creator's average | Typical Instagram ranges in India are about 5 to 10 percent for nano and 3 to 6 percent for micro creators |
We know of no published India benchmark for repeat purchase after a creator campaign, so set your own baseline in the first wave. Our guides to tracking influencer sales with discount codes and influencer marketing KPIs cover the method.
Mistakes we would steer you away from
- A borrowed pet. If the animal is not the creator's own, viewers sense it and the "I use this every day" line is false.
- Health promises. "Fixes itchy skin" is a medical claim. Keep to what the product is and how the pet reacted.
- Judging food on day one. Reorders arrive a month later, after the creator campaign has ended.
- Not enough product. A seven-day diary needs seven days of food, sized for the animal.
- Pushing a sudden switch. Brief a gradual change and a note to ask the vet.
- Stressful shoots. Heat, costumes and loud sets hurt the animal and the brand.
- Forgetting the label. A pet account's post needs the same disclosure as a person's.
If you are planning a pet launch, send us a brief and we will return a shortlist, content plan and cost estimate within 48 hours of the call.

Frequently asked questions
Does influencer marketing work for pet brands in India?
Yes, mainly for trial and repeat purchase. A creator's own pet showing a real reaction answers the question a pack cannot: will my dog or cat accept this? It works best for consumables that are reordered, so measure second orders at 30 and 60 days. See our D2C brands page for the wider model.
Which influencers are best for pet food and treats?
Dog and cat parents who already feed what they show, plus breed-community creators and first-time-owner explainers. Check that the pet in older posts is the same animal and that the creator's audience asks owner questions in the comments. Our micro-influencer marketing service builds pet benches of nano and micro creators.
Can a vet promote a pet product on Instagram?
It carries professional-conduct risk. The Veterinary Council of India's 1992 Code of Ethics, as we read the scanned text, discourages a vet from letting others use their name in publicity that invites attention to their skill, and bars commissions for referring clients. Ask the vet's State Veterinary Council before any paid promotion. This is general information, not legal advice.
How much does a pet influencer campaign cost in India?
Nano creators quote about ₹2,000 to ₹10,000 per Reel and micro creators about ₹8,000 to ₹80,000, with Story sets at ₹1,000 to ₹5,000 and ₹5,000 to ₹20,000. Add about 30 to 50 percent for ad rights. Our influencer rates guide lists every tier and format.
Can influencers promote selling puppies or kittens?
We do not brief creators to promote the sale of animals. Under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Dog Breeding and Marketing Rules, 2017 and Pet Shop Rules, 2018, dog breeding establishments and pet shops are registered by state authorities, per an Animal Welfare Board of India circular. Check registration yourself and take legal advice.
Do pet influencers have to disclose free products?
Yes. ASCI treats free or discounted products as a material connection, even when unsolicited, so the post needs a label such as Ad, Sponsored or Collaboration, placed upfront. The same applies to a pet's own account. See our ASCI influencer guidelines explainer.
How do you track repeat orders from a pet influencer campaign?
Give each creator a code and a first-order bundle, then compare second orders and subscription sign-ups by code at 30 and 60 days. No published India benchmark exists for repeat rate after creator campaigns, so your first wave sets the baseline. Our guide to UTM links for influencer campaigns covers the tagging.
