In short
- Pay for the creator's time and production, not the verdict. A review that cannot be negative is an advert dressed as an opinion.
- Give creators facts, a use period and a short list of legal do-not-says, not a script. Published rate guides add ₹15,000 to ₹50,000 for brand scripts at some mid-tier creators.
- Paid and gifted reviews both need an ASCI label. The brand shares responsibility for claims, and fines for advertisers and endorsers can reach ₹10 lakh.
- Our example, two mid-tier YouTube reviews, eight micro Reels, follow-ups and ten customer reviews, costs about ₹7.6 to ₹8.3 lakh.
An influencer review campaign sends your product to creators who use it and tell their audience what they found. It sells because viewers believe a review more than an ad, and it fails the moment they suspect the verdict was bought. This post gives twelve review campaign ideas, each with creator type, platform, what it achieves and a budget, and the rules that keep the reviews honest: no scripted claims, no paying for the verdict. It goes deeper than our guide to influencer marketing in India and draws on YouTube influencer marketing, where long reviews live, and gifting and seeding.
Budgets use asking prices from our influencer rates guide. For micro creators I quote the lower half of the Reel band, ₹8,000 to ₹40,000. Product cost, GST at 18 percent, usage rights (about 35 percent in our planning) and management fees (published benchmarks suggest 15 to 25 percent of creator spend) are extra.
What makes a review honest
You decide who reviews and what they receive. The creator decides what they say. These are the lines to hold.
| You can | You should not |
|---|---|
| Choose creators whose audience buys what you sell | Choose creators because they have never posted a negative |
| Send the real product, spec sheet and facts | Send a "talking points" document with praise lines |
| Set a use period and a posting window | Set a posting date earlier than the use period allows |
| Check the draft for wrong facts and prices | Edit or approve opinions |
| Give a short list of legal do-not-says, such as claims a regulator forbids | Script claims the creator has not tested |
| Pay a fee for time and production, whatever the verdict | Pay more for a positive verdict or refuse to pay for a negative one |
| Require a clear label | Present a paid review as an independent one |
The Department of Consumer Affairs' Endorsement Know-hows say endorsers should not endorse what they have not personally used or checked. Under ASCI's guidelines, influencers should also satisfy themselves that you can substantiate your claims. A script full of claims no one tested sets both up to fail.
Single-creator reviews (ideas 1 to 5)
| # | Idea | Creator and platform | What it achieves | Rough budget |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Two-part review. A 14-day first-impressions Reel, then a 30-day verdict. | One micro creator; two Reels | Belief that grows with use, and a reason to follow up | 2 Reels at ₹8,000 to ₹40,000: ₹16,000 to ₹80,000 |
| 2 | Long-form YouTube review. A dedicated video that tests the product in the way buyers do. | One mid-tier tech, home or beauty creator; YouTube | Search-friendly proof for people about to buy | Mid-tier dedicated video ₹1 lakh to ₹5 lakh; one guide puts a 500K-subscriber tech channel at ₹5 to ₹12 lakh |
| 3 | Review segment in a larger video. A 60 to 90 second section in a creator's regular upload. | One mid-tier creator; YouTube integration | Reach inside an audience that already watches | Integration ₹60,000 to ₹2.5 lakh |
| 4 | Expert spec or ingredient review. A qualified person reviews what is in or on the product, not promised results. | One micro expert creator; Reel | Authority for categories where claims matter; credentials shown upfront | Reel ₹8,000 to ₹40,000 |
| 5 | Buy-it-yourself review. The creator buys at retail and you reimburse. | One micro creator; Reel | Real purchase experience, including delivery and packaging | Reel ₹8,000 to ₹40,000 plus the product price; reimbursement is a material connection, so label it |
Panels and volume (ideas 6 to 9)
| # | Idea | Creator and platform | What it achieves | Rough budget |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 6 | Nano review wave. Thirty nano creators in your category try and review. | Nano creators; Reels or Stories | A spread of voices, with the odd criticism that makes the rest believable | 30 Reels at ₹2,000 to ₹10,000: ₹60,000 to ₹3 lakh |
| 7 | Customer panel. Fifteen real customers review for a small fee and credit. | Nano customers who already own it; Reels | Reviews from people who paid and kept it | 15 Reels at ₹2,000 to ₹5,000: ₹30,000 to ₹75,000 |
| 8 | Household panel. A creator hands the product to two flatmates or family members and films the verdicts. | One micro creator; Reel plus Story set | Several opinions in one video, good for appliances | ₹13,000 to ₹60,000 |
| 9 | Creator-picked comparison. The creator chooses three rivals and tests them side by side. | One mid-tier creator; Reel | A credible head-to-head; you do not pick the rivals or the order | Reel ₹50,000 to ₹1.5 lakh; fact-check every figure before it posts |
Over time and on your pages (ideas 10 to 12)
| # | Idea | Creator and platform | What it achieves | Rough budget |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10 | Ninety-day diary. Four Story sets across three months and a wrap Reel. | One micro creator; Stories plus Reel | Long-term proof for durable goods and routines | 4 Story sets at ₹5,000 to ₹20,000 plus a Reel: ₹28,000 to ₹1.2 lakh |
| 11 | Live review Q&A. The creator reviews live and answers viewers' questions. | One micro creator; live on YouTube or Instagram | Answers to the objections viewers actually have; see live sessions | About the micro dedicated-video band: ₹20,000 to ₹1.2 lakh |
| 12 | Review clips for the product page. Licence the five best honest reviews for your site. | The creators behind them | Social proof next to the buy button | Rights at about 35 percent of five micro Reels: ₹14,000 to ₹70,000 |
Write the contract so the review stays honest
Put the honesty in the paper, not just the brief. The terms below protect both sides.
- Use period. State the days of use before posting, matched to the product.
- Fee basis. The fee covers time, production and distribution. It is payable whatever the creator concludes, and the contract says so.
- Decline right. If the creator concludes after the trial they cannot recommend it, they may decline to publish. Decide in advance whether they keep the product (which is a benefit for TDS; see TDS 194R) and whether any production fee is due.
- Fact check. You get 48 hours to flag factual errors only, and the creator keeps the final say on opinion.
- Do-not-say list. Only claims you cannot lawfully make, such as cures or guaranteed results, plus any claim you cannot substantiate.
- Label. A clear, upfront label on every post, and the label kept on if you run it as a partnership ad.
- Rights. Platforms, period and edits for any use beyond the creator's own post; see usage rights.
Scripts also cost more. One published guide adds ₹15,000 to ₹50,000 for brand scripts at some mid-tier creators, plus 15 to 25 percent for revisions, and the result sounds like an advert. A brief of questions the creator should answer, such as what surprised them and who it is for, gets better content for less.
When the review is bad
Some will be. Reply publicly and politely, correct any factual error with evidence, and offer a replacement if the unit was faulty. Do not demand removal, hold back payment or threaten a legal notice over an honest opinion. Take the criticism to your product team, and if the same complaint appears across three creators, treat it as a finding, not a PR problem. Our guide to influencer crisis management covers escalation when a post goes viral.
Labels, penalties and the categories ASCI watches
Under the ASCI influencer guidelines, money, free or discounted products, trips and barter are a material connection, and disclosure is needed even when the opinion is honest. The label (Ad, Sponsored, Collaboration, Partnership or Free gift) must be upfront. If you or the creator claim there was no connection, ASCI can require a declaration signed by a senior member of the advertiser (Addendum 1, 15 July 2021). Responsibility is shared: the creator labels, and you must ensure the post conforms.
Under the Guidelines for Prevention of Misleading Advertisements and Endorsements for Misleading Advertisements, 2022, advertisers and endorsers can be fined up to ₹10 lakh, and up to ₹50 lakh for subsequent contraventions, according to PIB. ASCI's 2025-26 annual report lists personal care (16.9 percent), electronics and consumer durables (7.9 percent) and food and beverages (6.3 percent) among the top influencer violation categories; see cosmetics claims and food claims. Health and finance reviewers must state their qualifications when giving technical advice. This is general information, not legal advice.
One launch on public record (not our work)
We found no published case that shows how honest the reviews were, so we cannot hold one up as a model. What is documented is breadth: for the POCO F7 5G launch in 2025, MediaNews4u reported 250 tech micro creators on Instagram and YouTube and 15.15 million Instagram Reels views (agency-reported, about 60,000 per creator by our arithmetic). A launch that wants reviews you can trust needs many voices, not one.

Frequently asked questions
How do you run an influencer review campaign that is honest?
Choose creators who match the buyer, send the real product, give a use period and the facts, and agree that the creator may say what they found. Pay a fee for the work, not the opinion, and require a clear label. Check drafts for factual errors only. See our YouTube influencer marketing service for long-form review campaigns.
Can we ask an influencer to remove a negative review?
You can ask for a correction if a fact is wrong, such as a price, a specification or a feature that does not exist. Asking for an honest opinion to be removed, or paying for silence, is poor practice and damages the credibility you paid for. A better response is to fix the problem, offer a replacement if the unit was faulty, and learn from the criticism.
How much does an influencer review campaign cost?
A micro Reel costs ₹8,000 to ₹40,000 in the lower half of the published band, a mid-tier YouTube dedicated video ₹1 lakh to ₹5 lakh, and a nano review ₹2,000 to ₹10,000. Add the product, rights at about 35 percent and GST at 18 percent. See the influencer rates guide.
How long should a creator use the product before reviewing it?
Long enough that every claim in the video is true. A charger or a speaker needs days; a moisturiser, supplement or appliance that changes a routine needs weeks. Build the use period into the brief and the posting date. Our guide to evaluating influencer content quality shows how to judge the result.
Do paid or gifted reviews need a disclosure?
Yes. ASCI treats money, free or discounted products, trips and barter as a material connection, and disclosure is needed even when the opinion is honest. The label, such as Ad, Collaboration or Free gift, must be upfront. Only a product the creator bought, with nothing from you, needs none. See influencer disclosure hashtags.
Can we use a creator's review in our ads?
Only with a written licence that covers the platforms, the length of use and partnership ads, and only if the review is accurate and you can substantiate its claims. Usage rights are priced as a separate line, about 35 percent in our planning. See creator ads and whitelisting.
