In short

  • The 2026 season ran late March to 31 May. The BCCI secretary has floated about 10 March to 15 May for 2027, but that is tentative, not a published schedule.
  • One vendor estimates season creator spend at about ₹550 crore in 2025 and projects about ₹700 crore for 2026, so you compete for the same creators as everyone.
  • You can build on the season without league logos, team names, player likeness, match footage or wording that suggests you are official. Say match night, not the league's brand.
  • Illegal betting was 54 percent of ASCI's influencer violations in 2025-26. If your brand sits near betting, fantasy or real-money gaming, get legal advice before any creator brief.

IPL season influencer marketing works best when it sells the evening, not the league: a snack spread, a late-night order, a watch-party room, a regional-language reaction. Brands that borrow the league's marks instead can invite takedowns and legal letters. This post is the cricket slice of our guide to influencer marketing in India, with ten ideas that need no league or team branding, the tentative 2027 dates, the money and the rules.

The dates: one season finished, one tentative

The 2026 season ran from late March to 31 May. For 2027, the BCCI secretary has floated a start around 10 March and a finish around 15 May, roughly two weeks earlier, to avoid peak heat and pre-monsoon weather, according to Wisden. He called these tentative, and the full schedule is not out.

Plan around the uncertainty. A March start lands on Ramadan's last days, Eid at about 9 to 11 March, Holi on 22 March and board exams, which pulls teenage audiences offline and creators' calendars tight. See the festival marketing calendar, Holi and Eid and Ramadan. The men's cricket World Cup then runs from 2 October to 21 November 2027, so the cricket audience returns in the festive season.

What the money looks like

All figures below come from an influencer-data vendor, as reported by MediaNews4u on 19 March 2026. They are estimates and, for 2026, a projection.

MeasureFigure
Creator spend, 2023 / 2025 / 2026 projectionAbout ₹250 Cr / ₹550 Cr / ₹700 Cr or more
Share of league digital spend16 to 18 percent
Creator content by platformInstagram 52, YouTube 28, X 12, Facebook 8 percent
Budget by tierA-list 32, mega 25, macro 18, micro 15, nano 10 percent
Collaborations by sectorFMCG 32, e-commerce and retail 17, entertainment and OTT 16, consumer tech and telecom 15, fintech 10, auto 6 percent
Creators posting in the 2025 seasonOver 1.2 million

Two readings matter. Budgets skew heavily to celebrities, so a mid-size brand will not out-bid them and should not try. And more than a million creators posted, so the opening is in the long tail: micro and nano creators with a clear local audience and a product that belongs in the evening.

What you can and cannot use

India has no event-specific anti-ambush law, so disputes are decided under trademark, passing-off and copyright principles. A 2026 SpicyIP analysis by K&S Partners argues that non-deceptive, non-disparaging references are legitimate competition, while claiming official status or using logos without permission carries legal risk, and that courts have turned on whether conduct implies a connection with the event.

Lower riskHigher risk
"Match night", "cricket season", "the final over" in a creator's own wordsLeague or team names, logos, taglines, official hashtags
A creator talking to camera about the gameMatch footage, broadcast clips, screenshots
Gully cricket, family cricket, fan opinionsPlayer names, faces, voices or jerseys without a licence
Your own product in a watch-party scene"Official partner", "presented by", "IPL offer"
Plain-word briefs checked by your lawyerRelying on a disclaimer to cure an implied link

Put the table in the brief. Your risk is not only the creator's caption but the thumbnail, the audio, the hashtags and the ad creative. Have a lawyer review the brief and check each draft. This is general information, not legal advice.

Betting and fantasy: the largest violation category

ASCI's 2025-26 report found 1,609 influencer ads processed, 97.3 percent needing modification, and illegal betting at 54 percent of influencer violations. In 2024-25 ASCI recorded 318 influencer ads promoting offshore betting. Creators are often pitched betting and fantasy offers around cricket, so expect to be asked. If your client is a betting, fantasy or real-money gaming product, get legal advice before briefing anyone, and keep betting hooks, odds talk and "win big" language out of every other brand's briefs too.

Ten campaign ideas that need no marks

Before the match

  1. Match-night menu. Food creators build a snack and drink spread for six people. Reel plus a Story poll on what to order. Suits food, beverage and delivery brands.
  2. Watch-party room. Home and tech creators set up screens, sound and seating on a budget. Carousel plus Reel. Suits tech and gadget brands.

During the match

  1. Order at the break. Delivery brands post "order now" Stories with a link sticker, from micro creators watching at home. Needs same-day approval.
  2. The office on match day. Comedy creators perform the lunch-hour excuses and the next-morning replay, with the product in the scene.
  3. Fan-voice chat. Cricket-literate creators speak to camera about the night, with no match clips. A brand can sponsor the segment, not the game.

After the match

  1. The next-morning explainer. Cricket analysts on YouTube break down a tactic in Hindi or a regional language, with a brand integration of 60 to 90 seconds. Our YouTube influencer marketing covers formats.
  2. Midnight cravings. Food creators film what people order at 11 pm after the last ball. A strong fit for restaurants and QSR.

Through the season

  1. Gully cricket. Parent creators and local coaches film backyard cricket with kids. It celebrates the amateur game and needs no pro marks. Watch children's content rules.
  2. Match chat in your language. Creators in Tamil, Telugu, Bengali, Marathi and other languages talk through the night. See regional influencer marketing.
  3. Summer survival. Beverage, cooling and sun-care creators film heat-proofing a watch party in April and May.

Budget notes

Use the ranges in our influencer rates guide: a nano Reel about ₹2,000 to ₹10,000, a micro Reel ₹8,000 to ₹80,000, a mid-tier Reel ₹50,000 to ₹3.5 lakh, a micro YouTube integration ₹15,000 to ₹60,000 and a micro Short ₹8,000 to ₹40,000. Add about 35 percent for usage rights. Published guides put rush work under 48 hours at +25 to 40 percent, and cricket content is rushed by nature, so pay for a standby retainer instead of rush fees. Management fees run about 15 to 25 percent of creator spend in published benchmarks; try your mix in the cost calculator.

Disclosure and compliance

ASCI requires a label whenever money, free product or barter connects a creator to a brand. In a live stream, the creator must announce it at the start and end, which matters for cricket commentary; in a Story it goes on the visual. Permitted labels include Ad, Sponsored, Collaboration and Partnership. The brand and creator share responsibility. AI-generated visuals of players or a replicated voice raise both labelling and likeness issues. Read the ASCI influencer guidelines explained. This is general information, not legal advice.

Context from public campaigns

Public examples show the scale, not a formula. A vendor report counts over 1.2 million creators posting about the 2025 season and about 2.6 billion creator-led interactions, which is why standing out matters more than showing up. This is an aggregate from a platform vendor, not our work or an audited figure.

Frequently asked questions

When is IPL 2027?

There is no published schedule yet. The BCCI secretary has said the 2027 season could start around 10 March and end around 15 May, about two weeks earlier than 2026, to avoid extreme heat and pre-monsoon weather, but he called the dates tentative. The 2026 season ran from late March to 31 May. Keep payment milestones in creator contracts tied to a season window.

Can brands use the league name or team names in influencer campaigns?

Be careful. Indian law has no special anti-ambush statute, so courts apply general trademark and passing-off principles, and commentators say non-deceptive references are treated differently from anything implying an official link. Logos, team names and marks, official wording and match footage carry real risk. Brief creators in plain words and get legal review. This is general information, not legal advice.

How much do brands spend on influencers around the season?

An influencer-data vendor estimates about ₹250 crore in 2023 and about ₹550 crore in 2025, and projected about ₹700 crore for 2026, or 16 to 18 percent of league digital spend. These are one vendor's figures, not audited. Its tier split put 32 percent on A-list names and 25 on mega creators, leaving 15 on micro and 10 on nano.

Which platforms and creators work for cricket season?

The same vendor puts Instagram at about 52 percent of creator content, YouTube about 28, X about 12 and Facebook about 8. Food, comedy, regional-language, tech and home creators suit match-night briefs, and cricket analysts suit YouTube explainers. Our Instagram influencer marketing and YouTube influencer marketing pages cover formats.

Can influencers promote betting or fantasy apps?

Take legal advice first. ASCI found that illegal betting made up 54 percent of influencer violations in 2025-26 and 318 influencer ads promoting offshore betting in 2024-25. Creators and brands share responsibility for ads. Nothing here is a view on whether a particular fantasy or real-money gaming product is lawful. Read the ASCI guidelines explained.

How do we run real-time content during live matches?

Agree a framework in advance: pre-approved lines, banned words, a four-hour approval turnaround on match days and a small standby pool of creators. Live-stream commentary needs the disclosure announced at the start and end. Rush work under 48 hours can add 25 to 40 percent, so budget for standby fees instead of rush fees.
