In short
- A UGC creator makes videos brands use on their own channels and ads, so you are paid for craft, not followers. A phone, daylight and clean audio are enough.
- Build six short sample videos across unboxing, testimonial and demo, each with two alternate hooks, shot on products you own and labelled as samples.
- We found no published India rate card for UGC. Quote per finished video, with hooks, revisions and usage rights as separate lines, and know your floor.
- Say only what is true of the product, get rights in writing, and never present paid work as a spontaneous customer review.
A UGC creator is a freelance video maker whom brands pay for content they use on their own channels, ads and product pages, with the creator's followers playing little part. To become one, learn hooks, audio and product handling, shoot six sample videos on products you own, price each video with rights as separate lines, and pitch brands that run video ads. You can start with a phone, daylight and a clip-on microphone.
UGC is one of the seven routes in how to get brand deals in India, and the one where follower count matters least. For the brand side of the same work, read our guide on how to find UGC creators and the UGC content creators service. The market around it is in our guide to influencer marketing in India.
What a UGC creator does
| UGC creator | Influencer | |
|---|---|---|
| Paid for | The video and the right to use it | Reach, trust and the video |
| Where it appears | The brand's channels and ads | Your channel |
| Do followers matter? | Rarely | A great deal |
| Rights | The centre of the deal | An add-on |
| Disclosure | Depends where it is posted | Always on your post |
The two overlap when a brand runs your video from your handle as a creator ad, called whitelisting. Then the brand is buying your audience's trust too, so it will check your insights as well as your craft; see creator ads and whitelisting.
The skills brands pay for
| Skill | What it means in practice |
|---|---|
| Hooks | The first three seconds give a reason to keep watching |
| Voice | You sound like a person, in the buyer's language: Hindi, Hinglish or a regional language |
| Audio | Clear speech, no echo or wind |
| Light and framing | Face and product visible, vertical, steady |
| Product handling | You show size, texture and use, not a hand holding a box |
| Editing | Captions burned in, clean cuts, the right length |
| Delivery | Files named and sent on time, raw clips on request |
Regional language is a real edge. A 2026 vendor survey, covered by Campaign India, found that more than 62 percent of surveyed creators report receiving more regional-language campaign briefs. Offer the same video in two languages and you are easy to book twice.
Kit is simple: a recent phone, window light or one soft light, a clip-on microphone, a small tripod and an editing app. Buy the microphone first. Bad sound ruins an ad that has good pictures.
Build the portfolio: six videos
Brands cannot judge you without samples. Shoot six, on products you own or from a friendly local shop, and label them as samples. Never present sample work as a paid campaign.
| # | Video | What it proves |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Unboxing | Product handling and first reaction |
| 2 | Testimonial to camera | Voice and honest delivery |
| 3 | Demo or how-to | You can show a product being used |
| 4 | Problem and solution | Hook and story in 20 to 30 seconds |
| 5 | "Three reasons" or comparison | Structure, without naming rival brands |
| 6 | A second-language version of one above | Range |
For each, shoot two alternate hooks and keep the raw clips, so you can show a brand how it would test openings. Brands that hire UGC creators score a portfolio on eight criteria: hook, voice, audio, light and framing, product handling, honest delivery, range and category fit. Our brand-side guide on finding UGC creators scores each 0 to 2 and says 12 out of 16 earns a test. Score yourself the same way and reshoot the weakest two.
Host the portfolio on a link-in-bio page or a shared folder. Put your three best first, with one line each: what it is, how long and what the hook is. Offer raw footage on request.
Pricing: quote per video, price rights separately
We found no reliable published India rate card for UGC, so we do not print a range. Many UGC creators work in the nano and small micro bands, so the ranges for a Reel, about ₹2,000 to ₹10,000 for nano creators and ₹8,000 to ₹80,000 for micro creators, are a heuristic starting point, not a standard; the influencer rates guide lists every tier. The difference is that your fee covers production and rights, not distribution. See how much to charge as an influencer for how to set a floor from your hours and costs.
Quote a package, and itemise the rest:
| Line | What to state |
|---|---|
| Base fee per finished video | Length, format and language |
| Hooks and cuts | How many alternate openings and cutdowns are included |
| Revisions | Rounds included, fee after that |
| Raw footage | Included or extra |
| Usage rights | Platforms, paid or organic, number of days, named handles |
| Whitelisting | Per 30 days, if the ad runs from your handle |
| Exclusivity | Named competitors and days |
| Turnaround | Days from the product reaching you |
| Tax | GST status; PAN for TDS |
Rights: what to give and what to hold
Published guides put a brand repost at +25 to 40 percent, usage rights at +30 to 50 percent, 30 days of exclusivity at +30 to 50 percent, whitelisting at +60 to 120 percent and perpetual usage at +80 to 150 percent. These come from one brand-deals guide and an agency guide, and are asking prices, not audited data.
| Right | A fair standard | What to hold |
|---|---|---|
| Organic use on the brand's handle | Included for a stated period | No edits that change meaning |
| Paid ads | A priced window, named platforms | Renewal at a price fixed today |
| Raw footage | Extra, or included at a higher fee | Licence for the project only |
| Your face and voice in other creative | A separate consent and fee | No AI-generated likeness without both |
| Perpetual use | Only at the published uplift | Avoid in your first deals |
| Exclusivity | Named brands, 30 days | Paid as its own line |
Read usage rights for influencer content and the exclusivity clause guide before you sign anything. A contract that says "perpetual, worldwide, all media" with no extra fee is a red flag; see brand deal red flags for creators.
Say only what is true
UGC invites a particular risk: a brand wants a video that sounds like a real customer. The Department of Consumer Affairs' Endorsement Know-hows say not to endorse what you have not personally used or checked. So use the product before you film, and say only what you saw. Ask for proof of any claim in the script, and change lines you cannot back.
Three further rules:
- Do not pose as a spontaneous buyer for paid work. Say what you think, and let the brand label it as an ad where it runs.
- Label your own posts. If a UGC video also goes on your account, ASCI requires a clear label wherever there is a material connection.
- Avoid technical health or finance advice. Those need qualifications ASCI lists, so stick to the brand's approved lines.
This is general information, not legal advice.
Find your first three clients
| Where | How | What to send |
|---|---|---|
| D2C brands that run video ads | Watch ads in your category in Meta's public Ad Library and write down brands with weak openings | A short pitch and a paid test offer |
| Small brands with plain product pages | Look at their listings and videos for gaps | A before and after idea |
| Agencies and creator networks that brief UGC | Ask how they brief and when they pay | Your portfolio link |
| Your own circle | Local shops and friends' businesses | A discounted first project in exchange for permission to show it |
A pitch in five lines does the job:
Hi [name], I make UGC videos for [category] in [language]. I noticed [specific gap in their videos]. I would like to do a paid test: one video, three hooks, raw footage, delivered in three days for ₹[fee]. My portfolio: [link]. May I send a quote?
A paid test is a better deal for both sides than free spec work. The pitch templates and follow-up schedule in how to pitch brands as a creator apply here too.
A 30-day plan
| Week | Do this | Done when |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Learn hooks and audio; buy a microphone; study ads in your category | You can explain why a hook works |
| 2 | Shoot six samples with two hooks each | Six videos and the raw clips exist |
| 3 | Build the portfolio page, score yourself, set your quote and floor | A page and a price list |
| 4 | Pitch 20 brands with a paid test; track replies | 20 pitches sent, replies logged |
After the first deliverable, send files named by your name and variant, vertical, with a captions file and the raw clips, and invoice promptly.
Delivery habits that get you rebooked
- Send on the date you promised. Late files cost the brand ad days.
- Accept one consolidated round of revisions. A second round is a paid extra.
- Name your files so a media buyer can find the right variant.
- Keep copies of the contract, brief and approvals.
- Invoice with the right tax details. If you are not registered for GST, do not add it; see GST registration for influencers.
If you would like briefs where the fee, rights and deadline are stated before you agree, join the Influencer Gully network through the for creators page. It is free, and we never charge creators.

Frequently asked questions
What is a UGC creator?
A UGC creator makes video, photo or testimonial content that a brand uses on its own channels, ads or product pages, usually without posting it to the creator's own audience. You are paid per finished piece plus the rights to use it. Our guide to UGC vs influencer marketing shows how the two differ.
Do I need followers to become a UGC creator in India?
No. When a video runs from the brand's account or ads, your audience is not what the brand is buying. It is buying hooks, voice, audio, product handling and reliable delivery. Followers matter only if the brand also wants the video posted or run from your handle as a partnership ad.
How much do UGC creators charge in India?
We found no reliable published India rate card for UGC. Many UGC creators work in the nano and small micro bands, so the ranges of about ₹2,000 to ₹10,000 and ₹8,000 to ₹80,000 per Reel are a starting heuristic, not a standard. Quote per video, and price usage rights, hooks and raw footage separately.
What equipment do I need to start?
A recent phone with a good camera, window light or one soft light, a clip-on microphone, a small tripod and a simple editing app. Clean audio matters more than camera quality, because bad sound sinks an ad. Spend on a microphone before you spend on lighting or a new phone.
Where do I find UGC clients?
Start with direct pitches to D2C brands that run video ads, then add agencies and creator networks that brief UGC. Offer a paid test: one video, three hooks, a fixed fee and delivery in days. Use the templates in how to pitch brands as a creator and avoid networks that charge you to join.
Do I have to disclose UGC?
If you post it on your own account, label it, because ASCI requires a clear label wherever there is a material connection. If the brand runs it from its own handle, the brand is the advertiser and its ad rules apply, but what you say must still be true. Do not pose as a spontaneous customer for a paid video. See the ASCI guidelines guide.
