Influencer marketing in Punjab: a brand's playbook beyond the Tricity

Influencer marketing in Punjab means Punjabi-first creators, an audience that lives in villages, towns and abroad, and a music scene that needs a brand-safety check. This playbook covers regions, calendar, costs and a worked plan.

In short

  • Punjabi is written in Gurmukhi in India and Shahmukhi in Pakistan, and many Punjabi creators have large audiences abroad, so read audience country before you pay a Punjab fee.
  • A 2019 High Court order barred songs glorifying liquor, drugs or violence from live shows, so check a Punjabi music creator's lyrics and past posts before booking.
  • Plan around Lohri on 14 January 2027, Baisakhi on 14 April, the spring and autumn PAU Kisan Mela, and Gurpurab on 14 November 2027.
  • An eight-week farm-equipment test costs about ₹5.3 lakh in creator fees, before management fee, GST and creator ads.

Punjab's audience sits in villages, towns and abroad, so influencer marketing in Punjab begins with Punjabi-first creators and a check of where each creator's followers live. Add a brand-safety review for music creators and a calendar that mixes festivals, faith days and the farm year. Our guide to influencer marketing in India has the basics, and our regional influencer marketing service covers casting.

Our Chandigarh page covers the Tricity, including diaspora and faith cautions in a city setting. This post covers the rest of Punjab. Related playbooks are Uttar Pradesh and Bihar and Gujarat.

Two scripts, one language, and an audience abroad

Britannica notes that Punjabi is one of the few languages written in two mutually unintelligible scripts: Gurmukhi in India, associated particularly with Sikhs, and the Urdu-based Shahmukhi in Pakistan (Britannica). For a brand this has one practical effect. Punjabi video content is watched across the border and the diaspora, and a creator in Punjab can hold followers in several countries.

Statistics Canada counted 942,000 people who spoke Punjabi in Canada in the 2021 census, among the most spoken non-official languages there (Statistics Canada). That helps a study, remittance or bridal brand and wastes money for a local store, so read audience country in each creator's insights before you agree a fee. We do not use a creator's own claim about audience.

Brand safety: music, liquor, guns and faith

Punjabi music is a major creator niche, and it carries a specific risk. In July 2019 the Punjab and Haryana High Court directed Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh that no songs glorifying liquor, wine, drugs or violence be played in live shows, reasoning that such songs could influence impressionable children and that glorifying violence had fostered a culture of gangsters (LiveLaw). The order came in a noise-pollution case, and later hearings concerned how it was enforced; we found nothing newer, so treat the position as unsettled.

Our working rules:

  • Read the lyrics and the last 30 posts of any music or music-adjacent creator before booking. A creator whose feed leans on weapons, liquor or drugs is a brand-safety risk for most categories.
  • Keep liquor and weapon imagery out of the brief, even for lifestyle shoots.
  • Treat faith as off limits for sales content. Gurbani audio, gurdwara footage and religious symbols are not props. Our Chandigarh page explains the point; if your campaign touches it, use a reviewer from the community.
  • Clear music rights. A film or pop song in a paid Reel needs a licence; see our guide to music copyright in influencer content.

Punjab beyond the Tricity

Britannica places the Malwa region in central Punjab between the Ghaggar and Sutlej rivers, with Bathinda and Ferozepur in that plain, and defines a doab as the land between two rivers (Britannica). Punjabis speak of the Malwa, Doaba and Majha regions. The table is our working casting map, not an official division.

RegionCore townsCasting note
MalwaLudhiana, Patiala, BathindaAgriculture and industrial towns south of the Sutlej; check where each creator's audience lives
DoabaJalandhar, Hoshiarpur, KapurthalaCheck audience country before you pay; some creators here hold followers abroad
MajhaAmritsar, Gurdaspur, Tarn TaranThe Amritsar side; heritage, travel and food content; check faith cues in every shot
TricityChandigarh, MohaliSee Chandigarh

The point of the split is to fund what your distribution reaches. A brand with dealers in Malwa but none in Majha should not buy Amritsar content. A vendor survey reported by Campaign India puts tier 2 engagement at 3.5% to 4.5% against 3% to 4% in metros and typical campaign cost at ₹1.3 to ₹1.6 lakh against ₹3.8 to ₹4.5 lakh. Those are vendor estimates, not sales, but they favour testing the towns. Our guide to tier 2 and tier 3 cities explains how.

Creators, platforms and buyers

We found no reliable state-level platform split. As a test plan: Punjabi YouTube for long farm, food and music-adjacent content; Instagram Reels for youth, fashion and weddings; Snapchat as a small cell, since Snap says it passed 250 million monthly users in India and is focusing on regional creators (Snap); and creator ads to push the best post to one district at a time.

Creator typeFormatFitsWatch out for
Farm and rural creatorsYouTube integration, ShortFarm equipment, inputs, rural retailClaims on yield or running cost must be provable
Punjabi foodRecipe Reel, trailDairy, snacks, deliveryLocal credibility; a creator who knows the place
Wedding and fashionLookbook, vlogWear, jewellery, venuesSeason timing; book early
Comedy and familySkitApps, FMCGHumour that does not translate
Music-adjacentLifestyle ReelYouth brandsThe brand-safety rule above

For buyers, pull orders by district and match each region to the proof it needs. Our hypotheses, not findings: a hands-on demonstration for rural purchases, a clear price for town retail, and a creator the buyer already follows for youth categories.

Running a rural demonstration shoot

Rural and farm content is shot differently from café content. These rules come from how we plan demonstration days, not from a published standard.

  • Shoot at a dealer yard or a farmer's field, not a studio. Viewers judge the machine in working conditions. Agree the date with the dealer and a local farmer, and keep a spare day for weather.
  • Give the creator a spec sheet and a claims list. Fuel use, capacity and running cost figures must come from the brand and be provable. The creator should not invent a number on camera.
  • Put a trained operator on the machine. A creator should not run heavy equipment for the camera; show safe operation and let the operator drive.
  • Brief the farmer too. A farmer who appears in a paid video is part of the shoot. Get a signed consent and tell them it is advertising.
  • Plan the follow-up. Add a dealer phone number or a QR code in the first line of the caption, because a farmer who cannot reach the dealer will not wait.

A creator who looks the part but has never worked on a farm loses the audience in the first ten seconds. Our guide to how to find regional-language creators shows the native-reader test, and our creator ads and whitelisting service runs the district-by-district targeting that turns the best demonstration into dealer enquiries. For the full range of rural and small-town work, see influencer marketing for small business in India.

Writing for Punjabi viewers

Our regional campaign guide sets out the two reviews. For Punjabi, start with a script decision that other languages do not force. The video is spoken Punjabi, but the captions can be in Gurmukhi, in Roman letters or in both, and the choice changes who finds the post. Test two captions in a small cohort before you standardise.

Keep the offer, code and disclosure label on screen in the language of the video. ASCI allows English or the language of the ad, as long as the label is upfront, prominent and easy to understand (ASCI). Render the brand name in Gurmukhi, check the spelling with a native reader, and say it aloud before the shoot. Music cues deserve their own line in the brief: name the track, confirm the licence and ask for lyrics where a song plays. Pay on a native reviewer's sign-off of the final video.

What a Punjab campaign costs

We found no separate Punjab rate card, so the asking prices in our rates guide apply.

DeliverableTypical range per creator
Nano Reel₹2,000 to ₹10,000
Micro Reel₹8,000 to ₹80,000
Micro YouTube integration (60 to 90 s)₹15,000 to ₹60,000
Micro YouTube Short₹8,000 to ₹40,000

A demonstration shoot adds lines that a Reel fee does not cover. One published guide says production quality adds from about ₹5,000 to several lakh, and another lists ₹5,000 to ₹30,000 for each revision beyond two rounds; both are low-confidence sources, so agree production, a travel line for the dealer yard and the number of revision rounds in the contract, and keep them out of the creator fee. Rights for creator ads add about 35 percent in our planning, and published benchmarks suggest management fees of 15 to 25 percent of creator spend. The cost calculator builds the sum.

Where Punjab plans go wrong

Booking a music creator without reading the feed is the mistake the High Court order warns about. Paying a Punjab fee for an audience that lives abroad is the commonest waste, so read the country split. Using faith as a prop is the error most likely to draw a backlash, so keep gurpurabs and religious imagery out of sales content. Buying Amritsar content for a distribution that stops at Ludhiana wastes the fee, and a missing Punjabi reviewer lets a wrong claim run in a paid post that is yours.

Frequently asked questions

Do brands need Punjabi creators for Punjab campaigns?

For most mass and rural categories, yes. Punjabi carries trust and humour, and Hinglish suits students and city audiences. Run a small Punjabi versus Hinglish test and compare cost per result. Our Chandigarh page covers the Tricity, and the regional influencer service covers casting.

How should a brand handle Punjabi music creators?

Vet lyrics and past posts. In July 2019 the Punjab and Haryana High Court directed that no songs glorifying liquor, drugs or violence be played in live shows. A creator whose content leans on those themes carries brand-safety risk. Our guide to surrogate advertising covers the alcohol side.

Should a Punjab campaign target the diaspora?

Only if your product serves them. Statistics Canada counted 942,000 Punjabi speakers in Canada in 2021, and many Punjab creators have large audiences abroad. That helps study, remittance and bridal brands and wastes money for a local store. Read audience country in each creator's insights.

When should brands plan Punjab festival campaigns?

Lohri on 14 January 2027, Hola Mohalla the day after Holi on 22 March, Baisakhi on 14 April, Karwa Chauth on 18 October and Diwali on 29 October. The PAU Kisan Mela is held in spring and autumn. Treat gurpurabs as faith-led moments and keep sales messaging out of them. Confirm dates against the state list.

How much does influencer marketing cost in Punjab?

Creator fees follow national asking prices: about ₹2,000 to ₹10,000 for a nano Reel, ₹8,000 to ₹80,000 for a micro Reel and ₹15,000 to ₹60,000 for a micro YouTube integration. Add rights, ads, GST and a management fee. See the influencer rates guide.

Can farmer creators promote farm equipment?

Yes, with care. Claims on fuel use, yield or running cost must match what the brand can substantiate, and the paid post needs a clear disclosure label. Brief the creator on the claims, ask for a hands-on demonstration, and use creator ads to reach farmers by district. See our micro-influencer service.
