Micro explained

What is a micro-influencer? Followers, rates and how to judge one

A micro-influencer is a creator with roughly 10,000 to 100,000 followers: large enough to reach a real audience, small enough to stay close to it, and usually known for one niche. It is the tier most Indian campaigns are built on.

In short

  • A micro-influencer has about 10,000 to 100,000 followers, typical Instagram engagement of 3% to 6% and a Reel asking price of ₹8,000 to ₹80,000.
  • The band is ten times wide. Judge a micro creator by average Reel views and audience location, not by follower count.
  • Micro creators do three jobs: niche authority, many creative angles to test, and coverage of cities and languages.
  • Use micro for the core of a campaign. Use nano for local proof and mid-tier or larger names for launch anchors.

A micro-influencer is a creator with roughly 10,000 to 100,000 followers: big enough to reach a real audience, small enough to stay close to it, and usually known for one niche or one city. It is the working tier of Indian influencer marketing, with typical Instagram engagement of 3 to 6 percent and Reel asking prices of ₹8,000 to ₹80,000.

This post defines the tier and shows how to judge a micro creator on the number that matters. For what micro creators charge by format, read micro influencer rates in India. For how we recruit, brief and pay 50 to 500 of them in one campaign, see our micro and nano influencer marketing service. The channel as a whole is covered in our complete guide to influencer marketing in India, and the tier names in the influencer marketing glossary.

The band is wider than it looks

A creator with 12,000 followers and one with 95,000 are both micro, yet they are different buys. In published rate cards, the low end of the Reel range (about ₹8,000) fits accounts of 10,000 to 25,000 followers, and the top end (about ₹80,000) fits accounts near 100,000. Engagement tends to fall as followers rise, so the smaller account often has the higher rate and the larger one the bigger absolute audience.

Position in the bandFollowersWhat it behaves like
Lower micro10,000 to 25,000A large nano creator: close audience, often flexible on deal type
Middle micro25,000 to 60,000The sweet spot for niche authority at a workable fee
Upper micro60,000 to 100,000A small mid-tier creator: more reach, firmer prices, often a manager or invoice process

The sub-bands are our working guide, not a published standard. What matters more is the number below.

Average views beat followers

Followers show how many people once pressed follow. Average views on recent Reels show how many people a creator reaches now. A 2025 Goat Agency and Kantar study covered by MediaNews4u found that marketers rate engagement rate (39 percent) and content quality (36 percent) as better indicators of performance than reach.

Ask for a screenshot of insights for the last ten Reels, then divide the fee by average views. Our guide to reading influencer audience insights explains which numbers to request.

What micro-influencers do for a brand

Niche authority. A micro creator is often the person a group of followers asks about one thing: a haircare routine, a budget phone, a PG-room kitchen. Their recommendation lands because the audience came for that subject.

Creative variety. Twenty micro creators give twenty angles, voices and openings. You learn which message sells by comparing, which a single big creator cannot tell you.

City and language coverage. Micro creators cluster by city and language, so a brand can place Hindi, Tamil or Marathi content where its buyers live. See our regional influencer marketing service.

The shape is the useful part: a launch spread across hundreds of niche creators rather than one famous one, with the numbers coming from views, not from followers.

Where micro costs least, and the paperwork it brings

The 2026 creator-platform survey covered by Campaign India found engagement of 4.5 to 5.5 percent in tier 3 and 4 cities against 3 to 4 percent in metros, and a cost per campaign of ₹35,000 to ₹90,000 against ₹3.8 lakh to ₹4.5 lakh in metros. It is a vendor estimate and does not define "campaign", so read it as a direction: micro creators outside the metros are often the best value in the band. Our regional influencer marketing service casts for exactly this.

The same survey found only 15.2 percent of creators registered as a business entity or GST individual, so many micro creators will not issue a GST invoice. GST registration is needed once a creator's annual turnover passes ₹20 lakh (₹10 lakh in special-category states), according to CBIC material and a CA's summary, and barter counts at market value. Collect PAN and bank details, record every payment, and ask a CA how to treat payments to unregistered creators. Our guide to TDS and GST on influencer payments explains the rest. This is general information, not legal or tax advice.

Five myths about micro-influencers

MythCloser to the truth
Micro always means cheap per viewOnly if the account is real. An inflated 70,000-follower account can cost more per 1,000 views than a healthy 22,000-follower one, as the example above shows
A high engagement rate settles the questionSmall accounts can inflate engagement through pods. Check comment quality and audience location too, using our engagement rate calculator as a start
Micro creators are hobbyists, so output is roughSome post after work and some do it full time. Ask for two past brand posts and judge the craft yourself
Micro posts cannot be turned into adsThey can. Any creator who grants permission can be whitelisted; see what is influencer whitelisting
Once booked, the work is doneEach creator still needs a brief, a draft review, a label check and a payment, so admin grows with the creator count, not the fee

Five questions a micro quote should answer

  1. What does the fee include? One Reel, or a Reel plus Stories and a post? Bundles are priced at about 1.6 to 2.5 times a single Reel in published cards.
  2. What do average views say? Divide the fee by them.
  3. Where does the audience live? A Delhi-NCR food creator with an audience mostly elsewhere will not fill your Delhi outlet.
  4. How many recent posts are ads? If most are, the audience has learned to scroll past.
  5. What rights are included? Reposting on your handle, running the post as an ad, and exclusivity all cost extra. Our post on usage rights lists the terms.

What micro costs

Typical asking prices per creator, before GST, from the ranges used across this site:

FormatMicro asking price
Instagram Reel₹8,000 to ₹80,000
Story set (3 to 5 frames)₹5,000 to ₹20,000
Static post or carousel₹5,000 to ₹50,000
YouTube Short₹8,000 to ₹40,000
YouTube integration (60 to 90 seconds)₹15,000 to ₹60,000
YouTube dedicated video₹20,000 to ₹1,20,000

These come from published Indian rate cards, are asking prices and not audited deals, and the same band is often quoted two times apart. Add-ons stack: usage rights add about 35% in our planning default (one published card says 30% to 50%), and 30 days of exclusivity adds about 30% to 50%. GST at 18 percent applies if the creator is registered. Our cost guide and cost calculator price a full mix.

Frequently asked questions

How many followers does a micro-influencer have?

Most Indian rate cards and agencies define micro as 10,000 to 100,000 followers. Some sources use slightly different cut-offs, so confirm the band in any quote. Because the range is so wide, the lower end behaves like a bigger nano creator and the top end like a small mid-tier one. See the glossary entry for the tier names.

How much does a micro-influencer charge in India?

Published rate cards put a micro Reel at about ₹8,000 to ₹80,000, a Story set at ₹5,000 to ₹20,000 and a static post at ₹5,000 to ₹50,000, before GST. The low end fits accounts of 10,000 to 25,000 followers and the high end those near 100,000. See micro influencer rates in India.

Is a micro-influencer better than a nano influencer for a small business?

It depends on the job. Nano creators suit a local launch or barter at low cost per creator. Micro creators suit niche authority and more reach per post. A small business often does best with a few of each. Read what is a nano influencer for the smaller tier.

What engagement rate should a micro-influencer have?

Published Indian benchmarks put typical Instagram engagement for micro creators at 3% to 6%, and one guide says brands often require at least 2%. Treat these as rough guides, since none states a method. Compare creators in the same niche, and use our engagement rate benchmarks post and calculator.

How many micro-influencers should I hire for a first campaign?

For a first test, 10 to 20 vetted creators with one goal and one tracked code or link each is enough to see which creators and angles work. Fewer than that gives too little data, and more makes admin heavy. See how many influencers you need.

Do micro-influencers need a contract?

Yes, even for small fees. It should name deliverables, dates, revisions, the disclosure label, usage rights and payment terms. Many disputes begin with a vague deliverable. Our influencer contract guide goes clause by clause. This is general information, not legal advice.

Are micro-influencers better than macro-influencers?

They are cheaper per post and often more trusted in their niche, while macro creators deliver more reach per post and suit broad awareness. Neither wins in general. The micro vs macro comparison shows the arithmetic and how to split a budget.
