Micro-influencer discovery

How to find micro-influencers in India: where they hide and how to screen them

Micro-influencers have roughly 10,000 to 1 lakh followers, a band wide enough to hide a tenfold price gap. Here is where to find them, which type does which job and how to screen them in ten minutes.

In short

  • Micro is a tenfold range. Split it into three sub-bands before you search, because a 12K creator and a 90K creator are priced and used very differently.
  • Find micro creators through suggested-account chains, commenters on bigger creators, collab posts, adjacent-brand tags, YouTube long-tail searches and local-language queries, not 'top influencer' lists.
  • Screen on median Reel views per follower, whether the creator replies to comments and how much of the grid is ads, before you ask for any screenshot.
  • Tier 2 and 3 city creators often cost less and engage more, but confirm audience location in their insights, not their bio.

To find micro-influencers in India, look where small creators are visible but brands rarely search: the suggested accounts under a creator you already like, the comment sections of bigger creators in your niche, collab posts, tags on brands that share your buyer, long-tail YouTube searches and queries in your buyer's language. Then screen them on views, not followers. Micro-influencers have roughly 10,000 to 1 lakh followers, and most of this post is about telling the useful ones from the padded ones.

This is the micro slice of our broader guide to how to find influencers in India, which covers the seven general discovery methods and the 14-point checklist. We do not repeat those here. If you are new to the channel, read the complete guide to influencer marketing in India first.

Three micro-influencers, not one

A brief that says "micro" will come back with 12K accounts and 95K accounts under the same ask. Decide the sub-band by the job before you search.

Sub-bandFollowersReel ask in one published rate cardBest forWatch for
Small micro10K to 25K₹8,000 to ₹25,000Local, niche and regional-language work; barter plus a small feeThin data; one viral Reel can distort the average
Core micro25K to 50K₹15,000 to ₹50,000Repeatable conversion campaignsSponsored posts crowding the grid
Upper micro50K to 1 lakh₹30,000 to ₹1 lakhReach close to mid-tier with micro-level trustPriced like mid-tier; check views, not the label

The stepped bands come from one published rate card and are asking prices. Our own indicative range for the whole tier is ₹8,000 to ₹80,000 per Reel, so treat the top row as a ceiling you will meet, not a norm. Typical Instagram engagement for the tier sits at 3 to 6% of followers on our ranges; run any creator through the engagement rate calculator before you compare quotes.

Six places micro-influencers show up

General searches favour accounts that already look like influencers. These six routes find the creators one step below that.

1. The suggested-accounts chain. Open a micro creator who already fits, tap the arrow beside Follow to see similar accounts, open the ones that suggest, and repeat. After five or six hops you will see the same names returning. That means you have mapped the cluster. Menu labels change between app versions, so treat the steps as the idea rather than a button map.

2. Commenters on bigger creators. Open the last few posts of the top creators in your niche and read who comments early and at length. Many are small creators writing from their own expertise. Open the profiles of the long, specific commenters and keep those whose own grid has original content.

3. Collab posts. A collab post carries two handles, and creators who collaborate form clusters. Open a collab by a mid-size creator in your niche. The co-author is often micro, and their other collabs lead to more.

4. Tags on adjacent brands. Competitor mining is in the parent guide. Here, look at brands that share your buyer but not your category. A protein-bar brand's tagged tab surfaces fitness creators who also suit a water bottle or a gym-wear label. Fewer brands in your category may have approached them.

5. YouTube long-tail searches. Micro channels rank for narrow questions: "best air fryer under ₹5,000 for two people", "scooter vs bike for a daily 40 km commute". Search the buyer's question, then open each channel's Videos tab sorted by Popular. A video from last year that still collects comments with "where do I buy this?" shows durable reach, which a spike does not.

6. Local-language and city queries. Write the query the way your buyer types it: Roman-script Hindi or Hinglish, then the regional script. A Marathi search for a Pune cafe or a Tamil search for a Coimbatore saree shop surfaces creators an English query never shows. For city-led searches, see how to find local influencers in your city.

Six types of micro-influencer, and what each does

TypeWho they areGood forRisk
Niche expertTeacher, chef, mechanic or hobbyist with deep knowledgeConsideration; explaining how a product worksHealth and finance creators giving technical advice need stated qualifications under ASCI's Addendum II
Local personalityCity-based food, lifestyle or nightlife creatorStore launches, local offersResident or visitor? Check audience cities
Regional storytellerTamil, Telugu, Marathi, Bengali or other language creatorReach in markets English-first creators missBriefs and approvals need someone who reads the language
Rising creatorFast growth around one breakout formatEarly, keen, often flexible on priceGrowth may come from a giveaway; audit the chart
Plateaued proSteady 30K to 80K for years, many brand postsReliable delivery, clean filesAudience may be tired of ads
Part-timer with a jobPosts at weekendsAuthentic, unpolished voiceSlow turnaround; add buffer to the plan

Mix types inside one campaign. A food launch might use two local personalities for footfall, three niche experts for explanation and two regional storytellers for language coverage.

A ten-minute screen before you ask for anything

Run these five checks on public data. A creator who fails two clearly does not get a message.

#CheckHowPass looks like
1Median views per followerLast 10 Reels; take the median, not the meanReels regularly reach beyond the follower count; one spike does not carry the average
2Posting rhythmScan the grid for gapsSteady posts over the last eight weeks, no month-long silence
3RepliesOpen five postsThe creator answers comments, which means the audience is a relationship, not a number
4Share of adsCount paid-partnership labels in the last 12 postsMost of the grid is organic; if ads dominate, compare ad views with organic views
5Language, city, categoryRead captions and listen to the ReelsMatches your buyer on all three

The first check carries the most weight. Our guide to Instagram engagement rate benchmarks explains views per follower and why the median beats the mean. Passing the screen earns the creator a data request: dated insights screenshots, which we explain in how to read influencer audience insights. The scored version of the full audit is in our influencer vetting checklist.

Tier 2 and tier 3 cities: where micro often costs least

A 2026 vendor survey covered by Campaign India put engagement at 3 to 4% in metros, 3.5 to 4.5% in tier 2 cities and 4.5 to 5.5% in tier 3 and 4 cities. It reported campaign costs of ₹35,000 to ₹90,000 in tier 3 and 4 against ₹3.8 to ₹4.5 lakh in metros. These are vendor estimates, not audited data, but the direction fits the logic: fewer brands approach small-city creators, and their audiences live closer to them.

Two cautions. First, location in a bio is not audience location. A creator based in a small city can have most of an audience elsewhere, and a metro creator can carry a hometown following. Confirm the top cities in the insights screenshot. Second, small-city creators often work in one language, so budget time for briefing and approvals in that language. Our regional influencer service covers the practicalities, and city pages such as Indore and Surat describe how local creator scenes differ.

What to expect when you reach out

Most micro creators are individuals, not companies. In the same survey, only 15.2% of creators were registered as a business entity or GST individual. Expect a PAN and bank details rather than a GST invoice, and plan TDS and invoicing before booking, not after the post goes live. Our guide to TDS 194R and GST on influencer payments explains where the rules are settled and where they are not.

When you message, put the product, the deliverable, a budget range and the disclosure label in the first note. Our influencer outreach message templates have wording for paid, barter and long-term asks, and the media kit guide shows how to read what comes back.

From 90 profiles to 20 bookings: an illustrative funnel

Mapping about four to five times the number you intend to book gives you room to be strict at the screen. Message about double, as the parent guide advises, and adjust the ratios after your first run.

What a micro creator costs, and what changes the quote

Indicative asking prices per creator, from medians of nine published Indian rate cards in 2026:

DeliverableMicro range
Instagram Reel₹8,000 to ₹80,000
Instagram Story set₹5,000 to ₹20,000
Static post or carousel₹5,000 to ₹50,000
YouTube dedicated video₹20,000 to ₹1,20,000
YouTube Short₹8,000 to ₹40,000

GST is usually extra. Usage rights typically add about 35%, and a 30-day exclusivity window about 40%, on our planning defaults; premium niches such as finance and tech can add about 50%. See the influencer rates guide for sources and caveats and the influencer cost calculator to price a mix.

Mistakes that waste a micro budget

  • Searching "micro" as one tier. Pick the sub-band first.
  • Trusting the follower number at the top of the band. An illustrative 95K account averaging 6,000 Reel views is priced near mid-tier and delivers like a much smaller account.
  • Ignoring ad share. A grid that is mostly paid posts has already spent its audience's trust.
  • Skipping the language check. An English brief sent to a creator who works in Marathi invites rounds of revisions.
  • Booking one micro creator and judging the whole tier. The point of micro is a portfolio; one result tells you little.

We run casting, vetting and briefs for 50 to 500 micro creators at once, scored with the Gully Score, from a network of 50,000+ creators. If you want that done for you, our micro-influencer service explains how, and a brief gets you a vetted plan within 48 hours.

Frequently asked questions

What is a micro-influencer in India?

A micro-influencer is a creator with roughly 10,000 to 1 lakh followers, usually with a tight niche and a visible relationship with their audience. Some rate cards stop the band at 50,000 and some push it to 2 lakh, so confirm what a vendor means. Our micro-influencer service uses the 10K to 1 lakh definition.

How many micro-influencers should I hire for one campaign?

It depends on the job. A local launch may need five to ten in one city. A national awareness push may need 50 or more across languages. Start with a pilot of 10 to 20, measure cost per view and cost per result by creator, then scale the ones that beat the average.

Where can I find micro-influencers for free?

Instagram and YouTube search cost nothing. Use the suggested-accounts list on a creator you like, read the commenters on bigger creators in your niche, check collab posts and browse tags on brands that share your buyer. It takes longer than a paid database, but the data you check is the platform's own.

Are micro-influencers better than macro-influencers?

For trust, niche reach and cost per result they often are, and macro creators win on speed and scale. The right answer depends on your goal. We compare the two with sample budget splits in micro vs macro influencers.

How do I know if a micro-influencer's engagement is real?

Compare views and reach with followers, read about 40 comments, and ask for dated insights screenshots showing audience location and 30-day reach. Engagement that is high on likes but empty on saves, shares and specific comments needs a closer look. Our fake followers guide has the full audit.

Do micro-influencers accept barter?

Smaller ones often do, especially nano and small micro creators who would buy the product anyway. Larger micro creators usually want a fee on top. Read how to find barter-ready creators in our barter sourcing guide before you ship anything.
