In short
- Set a cost ceiling per install from the value of a first transaction before you shortlist anyone. Without a ceiling, every quote looks reasonable.
- Test with 8 to 12 creators over four weeks, then put weight behind the three or four whose users went on to transact, usually by running their posts as creator ads.
- Tracking has to work before the first post: a link per creator, a deep link to the right screen and events you can verify. Hold bonuses until the events are verified.
- Avoid pure per-install deals and any category the rules bar. ASCI found illegal betting made up 54% of influencer violations in FY2025-26.
To hire influencers for app installs, decide three things before you brief anyone: the event you are paying for (an install, a sign-up or a first transaction), the most you can pay for it, and a small test that will tell you which creators and hooks deliver. Then book 8 to 12 creators for four weeks, track each one with their own link and put weight behind the few whose users transact.
This post is the hiring side of the job: the brief, the casting, the budget and the read. The event model and the measurement stack are covered in our page on influencer marketing for apps and startups, and the pay-for-outcomes methods in our performance influencer marketing service. For the channel as a whole, see the complete guide to influencer marketing in India.
What results to expect
Be honest about the evidence. We found no reliable published India benchmark for cost per install from creator campaigns, so any figure you are quoted as "typical" deserves a question about where it came from. What creators do reliably is show, in thirty seconds, why someone would use the app. What they cannot do is guarantee installs.
A sensible first campaign gives you this, in order:
- Days 1 to 3 after a post: clicks and installs on Android, where click-through attribution is clearest, and the first comments that show which hook landed.
- Week 1 to 2: registrations and first transactions, so you can see which creators sent people who did something.
- Week 3 to 4: day-7 retention by creator, and a clear shortlist of who to rebook.
- Weeks 5 to 8: cheaper users once the best posts run as creator ads. About 76.6% of surveyed brands have run partnership ads with influencers, though only 23.3% do so regularly (2026 vendor survey), so the habit is a real edge.
Set the ceiling before you shortlist
Your ceiling is the most you can pay per install and still make money. Work it out in two steps. First, estimate the margin from one user who completes a first transaction. Second, divide by the share of installers who reach that transaction.
Suppose a first-transaction user is worth ₹400 in margin and one in four installers transacts. The ceiling is ₹400 divided by four, or ₹100 per install. Those numbers are assumptions to show the method, not benchmarks. Use yours.
Then test every quote against it. The table shows how many installs each quote needs to break even and what share of viewers that implies, using assumed average views. Replace the views with each creator's real average from their insights.
| Creator | Planning fee | Assumed views | Installs needed at ₹100 | Installs needed per 100 views |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nano Reel | ₹4,000 | 3,000 | 40 | 1.3 |
| Micro Reel | ₹20,000 | 15,000 | 200 | 1.3 |
| App reviewer, YouTube integration | ₹50,000 | 30,000 | 500 | 1.7 |
If the rate looks implausible for your app, the quote is too high for your economics, or the creator is wrong for the app. If it looks achievable, the test round will show whether it is.
Write the brief that produces installs
A brief for installs is shorter than a brand brief and stricter. Our campaign brief template covers the general version; these are the lines that matter for an app.
| Line | What to write | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Event and ceiling | "First transaction; ceiling ₹100 per install" | Lets the agency or creator judge fit before quoting |
| Audience | City, age band and language of the user you want | Keeps casting honest |
| One use case | The single job the app does for this audience | A feature list lowers response |
| First-win moment | The screen where the user first gets value | The creator should show this, not the menu |
| Offer | Sign-up reward or first-order offer, with end date | Needed for the code and the on-screen line |
| Tracking | Link, deep link and code, per creator | Without it you cannot rank creators |
| Claims | Approved claims and banned claims | The brand shares responsibility for the post |
| Dates | Posting window, draft date, approval turnaround | Installs depend on when posts land |
Which creators for which kind of app
Choose by the type of app, then by the audience's city and language. About 83% of brands say they struggle to find the right creators, and 95% in banking and finance (Goat Agency and Kantar, 2025), which is why vetting counts. Our Gully Score puts 30 of 100 points on audience authenticity, because bought followers do not install apps.
| App type | Creators to cast | What to show | Gate to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Utility and productivity | Tech and app reviewers, student creators | A task done faster, on screen | Reviewer niche premium (about 1.3x to 1.5x) |
| Shopping and savings | City lifestyle micro creators | A real basket and the saving | Offer wording and end date |
| Local services and food delivery | City micro creators, local nano creators | "I booked it today" with the result | A city-level offer; service live in that city |
| Learning and money | Student and early-career creators; credentialled finance creators | A week of use | Age gating; finance credentials (see below) |
| Entertainment and social | Comedy, gaming and lifestyle creators | The first moment of fun | Audience age and language |
For most apps the core is micro creators, with a couple of reviewers for credibility and a few nano creators whose clips can later run as ads. If you need ad-ready clips more than posts, our UGC content creators service makes them without a creator's audience attached.
How many creators, and a staged budget
Pay in stages, so a weak hook costs a little rather than a lot.
| Stage | Weeks | Creators | Creator fees (before GST) | Decision at the end |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Test | 3 to 4 | 8 to 12 across two hooks and two creator types | ₹2 lakh to ₹3.5 lakh | Which two or three creators, and which hook |
| Scale | 5 to 8 | Top three or four rebooked, plus creator ads | ₹1.5 lakh to ₹4 lakh including ad media | Cost per first transaction against the ceiling |
| Expand | 9 onward | More cities or languages, same method | Set by the ceiling | Whether each new city repeats the result |
Fees use the published asking prices behind our influencer rates guide: about ₹2,000 to ₹10,000 per nano Reel, ₹8,000 to ₹80,000 per micro Reel, and ₹15,000 to ₹60,000 per micro YouTube integration. Plan about 50% more for tech or finance creators, about 35% on top for usage rights if you will run their posts as ads, and 18% GST. Published benchmarks suggest an agency management fee of 15% to 25% of creator spend. Our pilot guide explains why to stage spend this way.
Measure users, not installs
Install counts are cheap to produce and easy to misread. Rank creators in this order:
- Cost per first transaction by creator. This is the number the ceiling was built for.
- Day-7 retention by creator. It separates habit from curiosity.
- Cost per registration, to find where the funnel leaks.
- Cost per install, last, as a diagnostic.
Attribution has gaps. Android click-through installs are reported more cleanly than iOS, so expect a gap between the dashboard and reality. Fill it with the in-app source question, a promo code and branded search around posting dates. Fraud filters on your measurement partner should be on before the first post, and bonuses should wait until events are verified. See our guides to influencer marketing attribution and KPIs.
Rules that change who you can hire
- Real-money gaming and betting. ASCI recorded illegal betting as 54% of influencer violations in FY2025-26 (ASCI). Do not brief creators on these products without written legal advice.
- Investing and finance apps. ASCI's Addendum II requires SEBI registration, with the number shown, for influencers commenting on stocks or investments, and suitable credentials for other financial advice (ASCI). See fintech and BFSI.
- Apps used by children. The DPDP Act and Rules require verifiable parental consent and bar tracking and targeted advertising aimed at children (PIB).
- Labels. Every paid or gifted post needs a clear label, upfront.
This is general information, not legal advice.
Mistakes that waste an app budget
- Buying installs. Installs that never transact are a cost, not a result.
- Tracking after the first post. Links and events must be tested with real installs first.
- One link for all creators. You cannot rank them or pay bonuses fairly.
- A script that lists features. Viewers remember the first win.
- Heavy sign-up rewards. They attract deal hunters who never return.
- Scaling before testing. Run two hooks first, then spend behind the winner.

Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to hire influencers for app installs in India?
A four-week test of 8 to 12 creators usually lands between ₹2 lakh and ₹3.5 lakh in fees, using published asking prices of ₹2,000 to ₹10,000 per nano Reel, ₹8,000 to ₹80,000 per micro Reel and ₹15,000 to ₹60,000 per micro YouTube integration. Tech and finance niches carry premiums. Use the cost calculator to size yours.
What is a good cost per install from influencers?
We found no reliable published India benchmark for creator-sourced installs, so set your own ceiling. Divide the margin from a first-transaction user by the share of installers who reach that first transaction. If a user is worth ₹400 and one in four installers transacts, the ceiling is ₹100. See influencer cost per acquisition.
Should I pay influencers per install?
Rarely as the only model. Pure per-install deals attract click spam and install farms, and serious creators decline them. A fixed fee for the content plus a bonus on verified first transactions keeps the creator motivated and protects your budget. Write the event definition and the verification window into the contract.
How many influencers do I need for an app launch?
Start with 8 to 12 creators in a four-week test, split across two hooks and two creator types. Fewer than eight and one creator's good week decides the result. After the read, rebook the top three or four and run their best posts as ads. Our pilot guide explains the sizing.
How do I track app installs from influencers?
Give every creator a unique link from your mobile measurement partner, point it at the right screen with a deep link, and add a promo code and an in-app question on where the user heard about you. Links catch clicks, codes and questions catch the rest. Read branded search and organic installs around posting dates too.
Do influencer campaigns work for iOS installs?
They work, but reporting is partial. iOS attribution depends on user consent and Apple's privacy frameworks, so dashboards undercount influenced installs. Use the in-app source question, promo codes and branded search around posting dates to estimate the gap, and compare cost per first transaction rather than cost per install.
Can influencers promote real-money gaming or betting apps?
Treat these as off limits unless your counsel confirms in writing that the product and the advertising are lawful. ASCI's data show illegal betting is the largest category of influencer violations. Investing apps need creators with the right credentials. See influencer marketing for apps and startups.
