In short
- Buy awareness in two layers: a few macro or mid-tier creators for reach, and 20 or more micro and nano creators for repeat exposure and trust, split by city and language.
- Define awareness before you pay: unique reach, views per creator, branded search and, if the budget allows, a recall survey. Likes are a side signal.
- Plan 6 to 12 weeks of presence, not one burst. About 72% of brands prefer long-term creator partnerships, and one post is one touch.
- Expect a measurable rise in views, reach and branded search. Do not expect orders to rise in proportion. Judge awareness spend against awareness goals.
To hire influencers for brand awareness, buy two layers. A few creators with large audiences get you seen quickly, and many micro and nano creators make sure the same people see you again, in their own language, from someone they trust. Define what aware means before you pay, run the programme in waves over 6 to 12 weeks and measure it with reach, views, branded search and, where possible, a survey.
This post is about the hiring decision for awareness goals: casting, mix, budget, timing and proof. The channel itself is mapped in our complete guide to influencer marketing in India. The services most used for reach are Instagram influencer marketing and celebrity and macro influencers, and the category that buys the most awareness is FMCG, food and beverage.
What awareness means, and what to expect
Awareness has four measurable parts. Reach is the number of different people who saw the content. Views count plays, including repeats. Branded search is how many people look for your name afterwards. Recall is whether people remember you when asked. Each answers a different question, so pick the ones your goal needs and write the targets down.
The audience exists at scale: DataReportal puts India's Instagram advertising audience at about 481 million (Digital 2026: India), and about 588 million people watched short-form video in 2025 (IAMAI and Kantar, via Free Press Journal). Creator-led launches can reach that audience quickly: NESCAFE's 2025 Minecraft launch used 28 streamers, and the lead stream reported 1.2 million views and 6.6 million impressions over one weekend (exchange4media). That result is brand-reported and not a benchmark for yours.
Our planning view of a good awareness programme:
- You can expect: views and reach that grow with the number and size of creators, a rise in branded search once reach is large enough to notice, and a library of creator content you can reuse as ads.
- You should not expect: orders in proportion to views. Awareness spend widens the top of the funnel; sales follow later, if at all within the window.
- Set the target as a range: for example, "reach 1.5 million unique accounts in our four cities" and "branded search up on the four-week baseline", rather than one hopeful number.
Two layers: reach and trust
| Layer | Creators | Job | Judge them on | Share of creator fees (our planning split) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Reach | One or two macro or four to six mid-tier | Get seen by many people fast | Average views, cost per 1,000 views | About 55% to 65% |
| Trust | 15 to 30 micro creators across cities and languages | Repeat exposure from voices people know | Average views, audience city split, comments | About 25% to 35% |
| Local | 20 to 40 nano creators | Neighbourhood and campus reach, user clips for ads | Audience location, content quality | About 5% to 10% |
The split is our planning habit, not a published benchmark. Engagement explains why layers differ: published benchmarks put typical Instagram engagement at about 5% to 10% for nano creators, 3% to 6% for micro, 1.5% to 4% for mid-tier and 1% to 2.5% for macro. Larger accounts usually look weaker on engagement and stronger on reach, so do not use one metric across all layers.
A 2025 Goat Agency and Kantar study found about 72% of brands prefer long-term partnerships with creators (Campaign India). For awareness the logic is simple: one post is one touch, and people remember brands they meet more than once. For regional reach, regional language influencers and micro and nano influencers do most of the work in the trust and local layers.
Compare quotes on cost per 1,000 views
Cost per 1,000 views is the creator fee divided by expected views, times 1,000. Expected views should be the average of the creator's last ten Reels, not the best one. Published asking prices per Reel are about ₹2,000 to ₹10,000 for nano creators, ₹8,000 to ₹80,000 for micro, ₹50,000 to ₹3.5 lakh for mid-tier, ₹2 lakh to ₹8 lakh for macro and ₹5 lakh to ₹25 lakh for mega creators. The same band is quoted 2x or more apart by different sources, so compare creators, not tiers.
An illustration with assumed views, to show the method:
| Creator | Fee | Assumed average views | Cost per 1,000 views |
|---|---|---|---|
| Macro Reel | ₹3.5 lakh | 4,00,000 | ₹875 |
| Micro Reel | ₹30,000 | 25,000 | ₹1,200 |
| Nano Reel | ₹5,000 | 3,000 | ₹1,667 |
On these assumed numbers the macro creator is the cheapest way to buy views, which is exactly why a reach layer exists. But views are not equal: the micro and nano layers deliver local audiences, language fit and believable voices that the cheapest view does not. If you want a deeper look at view quality, see how to measure Instagram Reel performance.
Brief for recall, not only reach
Reach counts people who saw a post. Recall needs them to remember whose post it was. Three briefing choices help without turning the content into an advert:
- Name the brand early and naturally. Ask each creator to say or show the brand within the first few seconds, in their own words, rather than only at the end.
- Repeat one line across creators. A single phrase, product shot or sound that appears in many creators' content makes the brand easier to recognise on the third sighting than on the first.
- Keep the product in the frame. A Reel where the product is visible for most of the clip usually helps recognition more than one where it appears for a second.
Leave the rest to the creator. Their voice is why the audience watches, and an over-scripted awareness post reads as an advert. Check each draft for the label and your key message, and keep approvals quick so the waves stay on schedule.
How many creators, how long and how much
| Programme | Creators | Duration | Creator fees (before GST) |
|---|---|---|---|
| One city or niche | 15 to 25: nano, micro and one or two mid-tier | 6 to 8 weeks | ₹5 lakh to ₹8 lakh |
| Four-city push | 40 to 60 across all tiers, one macro | 10 to 12 weeks | ₹15 lakh to ₹25 lakh |
| National moment | 80 or more, plus macro and mega creators | 12 weeks and an always-on tail | ₹40 lakh and above |
These are our planning bands. Add about 35% for usage rights on posts you will run as ads, 18% GST and, with an agency, a management fee that published benchmarks put at 15% to 25% of creator spend. Compare scenarios in the influencer cost calculator.
A 12-week rhythm
| Weeks | What happens |
|---|---|
| 1 to 2 | Targets written; baseline for branded search and, if used, the survey; creators shortlisted and vetted |
| 3 to 4 | Wave one: the reach layer posts, with the Story set and link in the first hour |
| 5 to 8 | Wave two: micro and nano creators post city by city, so each audience meets the brand again |
| 9 to 10 | Best posts run as creator ads to people who watched but did not follow |
| 11 to 12 | Wave three: a short second post from the best creators; end survey and search read |
Proving awareness
Start with the baseline. Note branded search for the four weeks before launch, and compare it with the posting weeks and the two weeks after. Search alone is a signal, not proof, so add one more method if the spend justifies it: a short survey of your target audience before and after, or a platform lift study on the creator ads. Our guide to brand lift in influencer marketing covers sample sizes and holdouts.
Earned media value, which turns views into a notional ad cost, can describe the scale of the exposure but should not be called a return; see earned media value explained. For the KPIs by goal, use influencer marketing KPIs.
Disclosure applies to awareness posts as much as to sales posts. ASCI's rules put the label upfront and, for a video of 15 seconds or less, on screen for at least three seconds (ASCI). Check each draft before it goes live.
Mistakes in awareness campaigns
- Counting likes. They describe content quality, not how many people met you.
- One big creator and nothing else. One voice and one audience, with no repeat exposure.
- One burst. A single week fades; waves compound.
- No baseline. Without a before, a search rise cannot be read.
- One language for four cities. Regional creators carry reach where English posts do not; see regional vs national influencer campaigns.
- Judging against sales. If sales are the goal, buy for sales; see hiring influencers for product promotion.
If the awareness goal is tied to a physical opening, read hiring influencers for a store opening. To get a creator plan with the reach and trust mix sized for your cities, send us a brief.

Frequently asked questions
How many influencers do I need for brand awareness?
For one city or niche, 15 to 25 creators across nano, micro and one or two mid-tier is a workable start. For a multi-city push, 40 to 60 across tiers and languages. Awareness is about repeat exposure, so spread creators over several weeks. Our guide to how many influencers you need gives the method.
How much does influencer marketing for brand awareness cost in India?
A single-city programme often starts around ₹5 lakh to ₹8 lakh in creator fees, and a four-city push with one macro creator runs well into the tens of lakhs. Published asking prices run ₹2,000 to ₹10,000 per nano Reel and ₹2 lakh to ₹8 lakh per macro Reel. See the influencer rates guide.
How do you measure brand awareness from influencers?
Use three signals: unique reach and views per creator, branded search before, during and after the campaign, and a survey or platform lift study if the budget supports it. Do not treat likes or earned media value as awareness. Our post on brand lift in influencer marketing explains each method.
Should I use one big celebrity or many small influencers for awareness?
A mix usually beats either. One large creator buys fast visibility but one audience and one voice. Many micro and nano creators buy repeat exposure, local language and trust, often at a lower price per view. See micro vs macro influencers and celebrity endorsement cost in India.
How long should a brand awareness influencer campaign run?
Six to twelve weeks is a sound range, run in waves so the same audience meets the brand more than once. A single week produces a spike that fades. Always-on programmes suit brands that need steady awareness, as covered in always-on vs campaign influencer marketing.
Is engagement rate the right KPI for awareness?
No. Engagement tells you about content quality, not how many people met your brand. For awareness, rank creators by average views, unique reach and cost per 1,000 views, and use engagement as a quality check. Engagement also falls as follower counts rise, so macro creators will always look weaker on it.
