How to measure Instagram Reel performance for a brand campaign

Measure a Reel on four layers: who it reached, how long they watched, what they did and what it led to. Here are the formulas, what Instagram's insights show and when to read them.

In short

  • Read four layers in order: delivery (views, reach), attention (average watch time against Reel length), response (saves and shares per 1,000 reached) and outcome (taps, codes, orders).
  • Compare each Reel with that creator's own median of the last 10 Reels, then with other creators on one cost basis. A single viral Reel proves little.
  • Read a Reel at day 7 and again at day 30, from the creator's own insights, and record the label each number came from. Instagram's metric names have moved before.
  • Keep organic and paid numbers in separate columns. Meta's developer notes say some counts cover organic activity only, and reach does not add up across the two.

To measure an Instagram Reel, read four layers in order: delivery (views and reach), attention (average watch time against the Reel's length), response (saves, shares and comments per 1,000 accounts reached) and outcome (link taps, code use, orders). Take every number from the creator's own insights at day 7 and again at day 30, and compare each Reel with that creator's median across their last 10 Reels, not with a headline average or a single best post.

Our guide to influencer marketing KPIs lists every KPI by campaign goal. This post goes one level deeper on one format: what a Reel's insights show, which ratios are worth calculating, when to read them and how to diagnose a weak Reel. For the wider channel, see the complete guide to influencer marketing in India. Instagram is the main influencer platform for 93.1% of surveyed Indian brands in a 2026 vendor survey, so Reels are usually where a team first meets these numbers.

What a Reel's insights show

Labels differ between app versions, so ask the creator which metric each number is. The table describes what each figure counts, using Meta's developer reference for the definitions.

Metric (label may differ)What it countsWhat to use it for
ViewsPlays of the Reel, including replaysCost per 1,000 views, views per follower
ReachUnique accounts that saw it at least once; Meta calls the figure an estimateReach per follower, views per reach
Average watch timeAverage time spent playing the ReelCompletion ratio
Total watch timeTotal time the Reel was played, including replaysCost per hour watched
LikesTaps on the heartThe weakest signal
CommentsWritten repliesRead them for intent
SavesAccounts that bookmarked the ReelConsideration signal
SharesTimes the Reel was sent onRecommendation signal
Followers and non-followersWhere the views came from, where your version shows itWhether the Reel travelled

Metric names move. The same reference lists impressions as deprecated for media created after 2 July 2024 and describes views as plays of the media, which shows how far the vocabulary has shifted in a short time. Record three things beside every figure: the label it was read from, the date range and the date you captured it. YouTube did the same thing in August 2026. YouTube Help says views are counted the moment a video starts to play, while YouTube's blog says most analytics still run on engaged views. A Reel's views and a Short's views are not like for like.

Delivery: views, reach and reach per follower

Delivery tells you how many people the Reel got in front of. Four ratios do most of the work.

RatioFormulaWhat it tells you
Views per followerMedian views of the last 10 Reels ÷ followersThe account's usual pull
Reach per followerMedian reach of the last 10 Reels ÷ followersThe share of the base that sees a Reel
Views per reachViews ÷ reachAverage plays per person reached; 1.0 means no replays
Non-follower shareViews from non-followers ÷ viewsWhether the Reel travelled beyond the base

Reach per follower above 1.0 means the Reel reached more accounts than the creator has followers, which can only happen through non-followers. Below 1.0 says nothing on its own; compare with the creator's other Reels.

Ask for the median, not the mean. A creator with one Reel that went far beyond the rest has an average that overstates what a sponsored post will do. Our guide to Instagram engagement rate benchmarks explains why, and how to read influencer audience insights covers the screens these numbers come from.

Attention: watch time against Reel length

Views count starts. Watch time shows whether anyone stayed. Divide average watch time by the Reel's length to get a completion ratio: a 22-second Reel with 9.9 seconds of average watch time holds 45% of its length, and a 45-second Reel with 9 seconds holds 20%.

We found no published India benchmark for completion, so use your own. Compare a creator's sponsored Reel with their organic Reels first, then compare creators in the same batch. A creator whose organic Reels hold viewers for most of their length has the craft to hold an ad.

The most useful watch-time check is positional. Note the second at which your product, claim or code first appears, and compare it with average watch time. If the product shows at second 14 and viewers stay for 9 seconds on average, most of the audience left before the message. Where your app shows a retention graph, use it to see the exact drop. Then ask for a version that shows the product earlier. The scoring sheet in how to evaluate influencer content quality puts this check at the draft stage, before the Reel is live.

Total watch time gives one more comparison. Views times average watch time should roughly match the total, so 38,000 views at 9.9 seconds is about 376,200 seconds, or 104.5 hours. The ₹24,000 fee then costs about ₹230 per hour watched. This puts a 7-second Reel and a 40-second Reel on one scale, which cost per 1,000 views cannot do.

Response: saves, shares and comments per 1,000 reached

Interaction ratios work best with reach as the denominator, because the people who interacted are people who saw the Reel. Engagement as a share of followers is a screening number for creators; our engagement rate calculator does that. For a live Reel, use per 1,000 reached.

Take the example Reel with 28,500 reach, 2,300 likes, 410 saves, 520 shares and 190 comments.

SignalCountPer 1,000 reachedWhat it says
Likes2,30080.7Approval, the cheapest action
Saves41014.4"I will need this later"
Shares52018.2"Someone I know should see this"
Comments1906.7Read them, do not just count them

Saves and shares together are 930 of 3,420 interactions, about 27%. Different Reels earn different signals. A how-to or price-comparison Reel earns saves. A funny or gift-led Reel earns shares. A Reel that makes people ask "what is the price?" earns comments with purchase intent. Pick the signal that matches the goal in your brief, and do not judge a humour Reel by saves.

Tag the first 100 comments by hand: question, purchase intent, praise, negative, spam or tag-a-friend. The share of questions and purchase-intent comments is a better conversion signal than the comment count. For tracking comments and mentions across a whole campaign, see social listening for influencer campaigns.

Outcome: what happened after the view

A Reel is a weak place for a link, so outcomes usually run through the bio link, a code spoken in the Reel, a pinned comment or a link sticker on a follow-up Story. Record profile visits and link taps where the creator can screenshot them, and code redemptions and tracked sessions from your own store. The set-up is in UTM links for influencer campaigns, tracking influencer sales with discount codes and Instagram Story link sticker campaigns.

Do not credit a Reel with sales it did not cause. A code can be shared on a coupon page, and a click can be a repeat customer. Influencer marketing attribution and brand lift cover how to check.

When to read the numbers

Read atPurposeRecord
Day 1Catch mistakes: missing label, broken code, comments needing a replyViews, comment questions; do not judge
Day 3Decide whether to boost the Reel as a partnership adViews, reach, saves
Day 7The main verdict windowEvery metric above, with a dated screenshot
Day 30The tail and the final numbers for the reportEvery metric above, with a dated screenshot

These windows are our working practice, not a Meta rule. Consistency matters more than the exact days, because a day-3 number and a day-30 number cannot be compared. Instagram Reels vs Stories explains why the two formats need different windows.

Organic and paid: keep the columns apart

Meta's developer reference says views, likes, comments and total interactions count organic activity only, excluding ads. If you run the Reel as a partnership ad, the paid figures sit in your ad account and the organic ones in the creator's insights. Do not add the two reach numbers together: the same person can appear in both, and reach does not add up. Report them in separate columns and say which is which. The steps to run a creator's Reel as an ad are in Instagram partnership ads setup, and our creator ads service is built around comparing creator ads with your own.

What the pattern says, and what to do

PatternLikely causeNext step
Reach near the creator's median, completion lowThe hook earns the tap, the body loses peopleBrief a shorter cut with the product earlier
Good reach, low saves and sharesEntertaining but not persuasiveAdd a reason to save, such as a price, list or how-to step
Reach well below the median, completion fineA distribution issue, not a content oneCompare with the creator's other brand Reels before blaming the creator
Views per reach above about 1.8Heavy replays, often from a very short ReelFine for awareness; check watch time before celebrating
Many "price?" comments, few link tapsThe price or link is missing from the ReelAsk for a pinned comment and a Story with the link
Sponsored Reel under half the organic medianA hard sell, or an audience that has seen too many adsReview the draft, and check how many brand Reels the creator posted that month

These readings are patterns we use, not published thresholds.

Comparing creators on one basis

The verdict comes from the pattern across ratios, not from any single number. The creator with the highest views is not always the best buy, and the cheapest cost per view is not always the best creator. Put every creator's row into one sheet, as in our influencer marketing dashboard template.

Mistakes that distort Reel reporting

  • Reading at 48 hours. The Reel is still collecting views, and a late-comer looks like a failure.
  • Comparing with a mean. One viral Reel in the creator's history makes every later Reel look weak.
  • Mixing windows. Day 7 for one creator and day 21 for another makes the ranking meaningless.
  • Adding reach across creators and paid. The same person is counted more than once.
  • Trusting a number with no label. Ask what each figure is called in the screenshot, and keep the date range visible.
  • Judging every Reel by saves. Match the signal to the goal in the brief.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good reach rate for an Instagram Reel?

We found no reliable published India benchmark, so build one. Take the median reach of the last 10 Reels for 8 to 10 comparable creators, divide each by followers, then take the median of those ratios. Judge new creators against that figure, and treat a Reel far below the creator's own median as a warning.

How long should I wait before judging a Reel?

Read it at day 7 for the main verdict and at day 30 for the final numbers. Day 1 is for catching mistakes such as a missing label or a broken code, not for judging. A Reel can keep collecting views for weeks, and the pace differs by account, so a 48-hour screenshot undercounts.

Should I price a Reel on views or on reach?

Use views for cost per 1,000 views, because views are what most rate discussions quote, and reach to see how many different people watched. The gap between them shows replays. Ask for both, from the same date range. Our influencer rates guide shows what creators ask by tier.

What is average watch time and how do I use it?

It is the average time people spent playing the Reel. Divide it by the Reel's length to get a completion ratio, and compare it with the second at which your product first appears. If average watch time ends before the product shows, most viewers never saw your message.

Can a brand see a creator's Reel insights?

Sometimes. When the creator tags your brand with Instagram's paid partnership label, Meta says the brand partner gets access to the content's insights, but the screens differ by format. Ask for screenshots at day 7 and day 30 either way. See Instagram's paid partnership label for the steps.

How do I compare Reel results with YouTube Shorts results?

Not directly. YouTube says that from 24 August 2026 a view is counted the moment a video starts to play, while Instagram's view count includes replays. Compare cost per 1,000 engaged views for Shorts and cost per 1,000 views and completion for Reels, and say so in the report. See YouTube Shorts influencer marketing.
