In short
- Choose a challenge anyone can copy in under a minute with things at home. If it needs a stunt, a dare or an adult watching to be safe, drop it.
- Seed with creators first and open to the public second. Twenty nano Reels cost ₹40,000 to ₹2 lakh and show whether people copy your prompt at all.
- Every paid challenge post needs an ASCI label that is upfront, not buried in hashtags. Treat prize-linked public entries as advertising too.
- Our example plan, 41 creator Reels over three weeks, costs about ₹8.1 to ₹8.7 lakh including rights, prizes and a management fee.
An influencer challenge campaign gives creators one simple prompt to start and the public a reason to copy it: finish the line, cook it in five minutes, style one piece five ways. When it works, a handful of paid posts starts a lot of unpaid ones. This post gives twelve challenge ideas, each with creator type, platform, what it achieves and a rough budget, plus the safety rules that decide whether a challenge is worth running at all. It goes one level deeper than our guide to influencer marketing in India and sits beside the Instagram influencer marketing service, because Reels carry most challenges.
Budgets use the asking prices in our influencer rates guide. For micro creators I quote the lower half of the Reel band, ₹8,000 to ₹40,000, which fits accounts of roughly 10K to 50K followers; accounts near 100K sit at the top of the full ₹8,000 to ₹80,000 band. For mid-tier I quote ₹50,000 to ₹1.5 lakh, the lower part of a band that runs to ₹3.5 lakh. GST at 18 percent, usage rights (about 35 percent in our planning) and a management fee come on top.
Four tests before you pick a mechanic
Run every idea below through these tests before you brief anyone.
- Copy test. Could an average follower do it in under a minute with what is already at home? If it needs a purchase, a partner or a venue, entries will stall.
- Safety test. Could a twelve-year-old copy it and be hurt? If the answer is anything but "no", stop here.
- Product test. Does the product do the work, or just sit in frame? A challenge where the product is optional teaches people to skip it.
- Fatigue test. What happens on day ten? Plan a second wave, a finale or a clean end date, because challenges decay fast.
Seed it with creators (ideas 1 to 4)
| # | Idea | Creator and platform | What it achieves | Rough budget |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Hook-line challenge. Twenty creators each finish the same opening line in their own way. | Nano creators in your category; Instagram Reels | Shows which prompt people actually copy, before you spend on it | 20 nano Reels at ₹2,000 to ₹10,000: ₹40,000 to ₹2 lakh |
| 2 | Five-minute plate. Cook, style or assemble something using your product in five minutes. | Ten micro food or home creators; Reels | Product-in-use content that shows range | 10 micro Reels at ₹8,000 to ₹40,000: ₹80,000 to ₹4 lakh |
| 3 | Lead and respond. One larger creator sets the tone; fifteen nano creators answer it. | One mid-tier creator plus nano creators; Reels | A clear "start" signal and a visible wave behind it | Mid-tier Reel ₹50,000 to ₹1.5 lakh, plus 15 nano Reels ₹30,000 to ₹1.5 lakh: ₹80,000 to ₹3 lakh |
| 4 | Original-sound challenge. A short audio made for the brand that creators perform or lip-sync. | Four mid-tier dance or comedy creators; Reels | A reusable sound that spreads beyond paid posts | 4 mid-tier Reels at ₹50,000 to ₹1.5 lakh: ₹2 to ₹6 lakh, plus audio production |
Let the public join (ideas 5 to 9)
| # | Idea | Creator and platform | What it achieves | Rough budget |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 5 | Seven-day streak. Creators post a daily Story on a small habit and a wrap Reel on day seven. | Five micro creators in the habit's niche; Stories plus Reel | Belief for products that need time, and repeat views | Per creator, Story set ₹5,000 to ₹20,000 plus Reel ₹8,000 to ₹40,000; five creators ₹65,000 to ₹3 lakh |
| 6 | Style it five ways. One item, five looks, same hashtag. | Eight micro fashion creators; Reels | Range and versatility shown by taste, not claims | 8 micro Reels: ₹64,000 to ₹3.2 lakh |
| 7 | Store scavenger hunt. Creators film a hunt through your store; viewers visit and post what they found. | Six local micro creators; Reels | Footfall and a reason to walk the aisles | 6 micro Reels: ₹48,000 to ₹2.4 lakh, plus hampers |
| 8 | Creator duel. Two creators compete at a harmless task such as a quiz or a bake-off; viewers vote. | Two micro creators; Reels plus Story sets | Debate and comments without a risky dare | 2 Reels ₹16,000 to ₹80,000 plus 2 Story sets ₹10,000 to ₹40,000: ₹26,000 to ₹1.2 lakh |
| 9 | One line, four languages. The same prompt in Hindi, Tamil, Marathi and Bengali. | Twelve regional micro creators; Reels | Reach outside English-speaking metros; see regional creators | 12 micro Reels: ₹96,000 to ₹4.8 lakh; regional rates can run lower |
Turn entries into assets (ideas 10 to 12)
| # | Idea | Creator and platform | What it achieves | Rough budget |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10 | Customer round. Thirty real customers who create content show how they use it. | Nano creators who already own the product; Reels | Credible entries, not strangers pretending | 30 nano Reels at ₹2,000 to ₹5,000: ₹60,000 to ₹1.5 lakh |
| 11 | Entries to ads. Pick ten public entries and license them with the entrant's written consent. | Public entrants; any format | Ad creative that looks like real people | Licence at about 35 percent of a nano Reel fee: ₹700 to ₹3,500 each; ten entries ₹7,000 to ₹35,000 |
| 12 | Amplify the top three. Run the three best creator entries as partnership ads. | The creators behind them; partnership ads | Proven posts in front of lookalike buyers | Premium of 60 to 120 percent of the organic fee in one guide, plus media at two to four times the fee; on ₹90,000 of fees, ₹54,000 to ₹1.08 lakh plus ₹1.8 to ₹3.6 lakh media |
How to brief and run it
Challenges fail in the brief, not in the posts. A good brief names the mechanic in one sentence, gives the hashtag or audio, lists three do-nots, and shows one example the creator should not copy exactly. Ask each creator for a concept note before they film, so you see ten ways of doing the same thing before any is public.
| When | What happens |
|---|---|
| Two weeks before | Mechanic fixed; written safety read by someone outside the creative team; rules page drafted |
| One week before | Nano wave briefed; lead creator briefed; audio or hashtag checked for clashes |
| Day 0 | Lead creator posts; brand account posts a pinned explainer |
| Days 1 to 3 | Wave posts go live in a tight window; brand replies to entries and removes unsafe copies |
| Days 4 to 14 | Best entries amplified; second wave or duel finale |
| Day 15 | Close date, winners announced, rights letters sent, report built |
Keep a person on comments for the full run. People will invent harder versions of your challenge, and you want to see them within hours, not at the weekly report. Our campaign brief template gives the fields to fill.
Safety: the challenges you do not run
No dangerous challenges, ever. The test is not whether the creator is careful, but whether the least careful person watching can copy it safely. Do not brief or approve any challenge that involves:
- heights, fire, water, roads, vehicles or speed;
- eating or drinking large quantities, very hot or very spicy food, or anything unsafe for a child;
- holding breath, spinning, choking-style games or other physical dares;
- peer pressure wording such as "I dare you" or "only the brave";
- health, weight or skin transformation promises within a set number of days.
Platforms publish community rules against content that encourages dangerous acts, and they change. Read the current text for each platform before you approve a concept, and keep a clause that lets you pause the campaign and require takedowns. This post does not cover injury liability; if your concept has any physical element, ask your lawyer.
Labels, audio and entry rules
Under the ASCI influencer guidelines, a paid creator post needs a clear label (Ad, Sponsored, Collaboration or Partnership) that is upfront and prominent, not only in a bio, not at the end of a post, not behind a "more" click and not buried in hashtags. On a video of 15 seconds or less the label must be on screen for at least 3 seconds. Responsibility is shared: the creator labels, and you must make sure the post conforms and can ask for edits. Under the Guidelines for Prevention of Misleading Advertisements and Endorsements for Misleading Advertisements, 2022, the consumer authority can fine advertisers and endorsers up to ₹10 lakh, and up to ₹50 lakh for subsequent contraventions, according to PIB.
For audio, popular tracks have licensing limits for brand use, so use cleared music or an original sound; see music copyright in influencer content. If you offer prizes, publish simple rules and read our note on Instagram giveaways. Get written consent before reusing any entrant's video, and agree duration and platforms with paid creators using our guide to usage rights. This is general information, not legal advice.
One campaign on public record (not our work)
Garnier Men's "Bassi vs Garnier Men Facewash" (L'Oréal with BBH India, 2025) used a lead comedian, more than 100 other comedians and a brand ambassador in the finale. BBH India's chief creative officer reported sales up 44 percent, a sell-out on the top three quick-commerce platforms and search interest rising from 0 to 100. These are agency-reported figures, and it is not a challenge in the dance-trend sense. It does share the shape: one named mechanic that many creators ran in their own voice. A ₹8 lakh budget buys the shape, not the scale.
Next steps
If you want the public to enter for prizes, plan the mechanics with our Instagram giveaways guide. For a finale, a live session lets winners and creators meet viewers in real time, and a cause-linked challenge needs its own honesty checks. Frequently asked questions
What is an influencer challenge campaign?
It is a campaign built on one simple, repeatable prompt: finish a line, cook a dish in five minutes, style one item five ways. Paid creators start it, and the public copies it with your hashtag or audio. It suits Reels-led platforms and products that can be shown in use. See our Instagram influencer marketing service for how Reels campaigns are run.
How much does an influencer challenge campaign cost?
A first round with 20 nano Reels costs ₹40,000 to ₹2 lakh at published asking prices. A fuller programme with one mid-tier lead, ten micro creators and thirty nano creators comes to about ₹8 lakh with rights, prizes and fees in our example. Add 18 percent GST. Price your own mix in the influencer cost calculator.
How do you stop an influencer challenge from becoming dangerous?
Design it so that the safest way to do it is the only way: no heights, fire, roads, speed, large quantities of food or drink, or physical dares. Have someone outside the creative team do a written safety read before the brief goes out, ban peer pressure wording, and keep the right to pause and take down. Our post on brand liability for influencer posts covers who answers when something goes wrong.
Do people who join a brand challenge have to disclose?
Paid creators must, with a clear label such as Ad, Sponsored, Collaboration or Partnership. For public entrants with no connection to you, no label is needed. If you give prizes or products to entrants, ASCI's definition of a material connection includes gifts and awards, so we advise asking them to label. That is our reading, so confirm with your legal team.
How many creators do you need to start a challenge?
Enough that a follower sees the prompt several times in a day. As a rule of thumb that is 20 to 40 nano and micro creators posting within the same 72 hours, with one larger creator to set the tone. With only a handful, a challenge tends to read as a single post. Our guide to how many influencers you need explains the arithmetic.
How do you measure a challenge campaign?
Count entries that use your hashtag or audio, share of entries by non-paid users, views per creator against the fee, saves and shares, and branded search or orders in the posting window. Entries alone flatter you, so also record how many used the product correctly. Our note on Instagram Reel performance lists the metrics that matter.
