In short
- Three routes exist: boost a published post, upload new media under the creator's handle, or run the creator's file from your own handle. Rights, header and files differ.
- Meta's Reels ad guidance favours 9:16 video and original audio, with the top 14 percent, bottom 35 percent and sides 6 percent kept free of key elements.
- Partnership ads support all six Meta objectives, but not calls as a conversion location, and some lead routes are unsupported. Check the objective before you brief.
- Brief creators for ads before the shoot: vertical master, cleared audio, three alternate openings, no on-screen interface and the disclosure label in the middle band.
Creator content gets into Meta ads by three routes. You boost a published creator post as a partnership ad, you upload new media under the creator's handle, or you run the creator's file as an ordinary ad from your own handle. The route decides whose name shows, which rights you need and what the creator has to hand over.
Our creator ads and whitelisting page explains why brands do this and what it costs, and Instagram partnership ads setup has the click path for permissions and codes. This post covers the question between them: which route suits which content, and how to prepare the files so Meta runs them well. For the wider picture, see our guide to influencer marketing in India. Menu names change, so confirm each label on screen.
Three routes, side by side
| A. Boost a published post | B. New media under the creator's handle | C. The creator's file from your handle | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Header | Creator, or creator and you | Creator, or creator and you | You |
| Permission | Paid partnership tag with boost allowed, an ad code, or account-level | Account-level permission | A licence in the contract; no Meta permission |
| Creator's feed | The post is there | The creative may never appear on it | It never appears on it |
| What reaches Meta | The existing post | Media you upload in Ads Manager | Media you upload in Ads Manager |
| Rights line in our usage ladder | Level 3 | Level 3, with the cut approved | Level 4 |
| Best for | Organic hits worth scaling | Re-cuts and new hooks of a creator's content | UGC-style ads and handle tests |
| Watch for | Format limits and the post's own comments | The creator must know the ad exists | Likeness and the label |
Route B rests on Meta's statement that, with account-level permission, advertisers can create a partnership ad by boosting existing content or uploading new content in Ads Manager. The trade calls such an ad a dark post, because the creative never sits on a feed. Our post on dark posting influencer content explains what that does and does not change. For the YouTube equivalent, see influencer content for YouTube ads.
Pick the route by the job
- Scale a post that already works. Route A. The post keeps the creator's native feel and its own comments.
- Fix a good post in the wrong shape. If the music is not cleared, the hook is late or the cut is too long, route B with a creator re-cut, or route C if you hold file rights.
- Find out whether the handle matters. Run the same video by route A or B and by route C. Partnership ads creative testing shows the test.
- Need many variants. Route C with a brief written for ads. Nobody's feed is cluttered, and our UGC creators service is built for this.
What the header can show
Meta documents three header options for a partnership ad: both advertiser and partner, the partner only, or a dynamic identity that lets Meta decide. It says ranking uses signals from both accounts whichever identity appears, that a maximum of two identities can show, and that the first identity must be the account that authored the post. It recommends dynamic identity as a best practice.
Our habit: both accounts for brand-led launches where the partnership is the message, the creator alone when they describe their own use of the product, and dynamic when nobody has a view. If the header matters to your brand, make it a test rather than an argument.
Objectives and conversion locations
Meta's supported objectives page shows what a partnership ad can optimise for. The notable limits:
| Objective | Supported destinations | Not supported |
|---|---|---|
| Awareness | On your ad; messaging apps | None listed |
| Traffic | Website, app, messaging apps, profile | Calls |
| Engagement | Video views, post engagement, event response, messaging apps, website, app, Facebook Page | Calls |
| Leads | Website, instant forms, app | Messenger, instant forms plus Messenger, Instagram, calls |
| Sales | Website, website and shop, messaging apps, app, website and app, in manual or Advantage+ sales campaigns | Calls |
| App promotion | App | None listed |
A creator-led lead ad can therefore end in an instant form, but not in a call. Decide the destination before the brief, because it changes the closing line the creator speaks.
The specs Meta publishes for Reels ads
Meta's Ads Guide for Reels and its safe-zone page are the reference. Creator Reels shot for organic reach often break them.
| Item | Meta's published guidance | What it means for creator content |
|---|---|---|
| Ratio and size | 9:16, 1440 x 2560 pixels recommended | Ask for a vertical master at that size, or the nearest the creator can export |
| Length | Up to 15 minutes | Allowed, but a 20-second cut usually serves an ad better |
| Sound and captions | Sound strongly recommended; captions recommended | Deliver a clean file and a captions file, so you control both |
| Music | No licensed music; use original audio or royalty-free music from Meta's Sound Collection | A trending track that suits organic can block the ad |
| Effects | No face or camera effects, no product tags | Ask for a shoot without filters |
| Edge margins | Keep at least 14% of the top, 35% of the bottom and 6% of each side free of text, logos and key elements | The profile icon and button sit there |
| Disclaimers | Leave the bottom 40% free if a Reels ad carries disclaimers | Plan legal lines and the label together |
| Older posts | Reels published before 15 October 2021 are not eligible | Matters for evergreen content |
The Stories rules differ: videos of 60 seconds or less, no link stickers and a short sticker list, set out in Meta's eligible formats page and our setup guide.
Where the label goes
ASCI wants the disclosure upfront and prominent: on screen for at least three seconds in a video of 15 seconds or less, and for one third of the length in a video under two minutes. Meta wants the edges clear. The two fit together if you place the label in the middle band of the frame in the first seconds. Keep it there after any crop. See ASCI's influencer advertising guidelines and our ASCI explainer. This is general information, not legal advice.
Placements and crops
Meta recommends 9:16 for Stories, Status and Reels and offers 1:1 and 4:5 in feed. Where media customisation is available, Ads Manager lets you upload up to ten images or videos for one ad, and if you do not supply every aspect ratio Meta fills the gaps by padding, cropping or expansion. Review the auto-generated crops, because a crop is where a label and a product shot go missing.
For partnership ads built from existing posts, placement asset customisation lets you use different organic posts from the same creator in different placements, each with its own call to action. A creator's carousel can serve feed while their Reel serves Stories and Reels.
Comments, labels and moderation
Meta says you cannot manage or delete likes and comments on a boosted post until the partnership ad is live, so read the comment thread before you commit, and agree moderation rules with the creator up front. Meta labels ads with its own Ad label, and a partnership ad shows the partner in the header. Neither replaces the creator's own on-screen label. Our guide to the paid partnership label covers the handshake.
The file brief for creators
This is our practice, not a Meta rule. Add it to every brief where ad use is in the contract.
| Ask for | Why |
|---|---|
| A vertical 9:16 master, exported at the highest quality the creator can manage, without app watermarks | The platform's recommended size, and clean edges for cropping |
| Original audio, or a list of every track used | Licensed music is the commonest reason a good Reel cannot run as an ad |
| A clean version without burned-in captions, plus a captions file | You control language and placement |
| Three alternate openings of about three seconds | Hook tests need material |
| No face filters, product tags or stickers inside the video | Meta lists them as unsupported for Reels |
| The label in the middle band, in the first seconds | It must survive crops |
| No price or offer text baked in | Offers change faster than files |
| Claims only from your claims sheet | Ads reach strangers who will not read the caption |
What it costs
Published guides, all low confidence, add 60 to 120 percent to an organic fee for partnership-ad rights, or 20 to 50 percent per 30 days, and put ad media at typically two to four times the creator fee. Micro-creator Reel asking prices run about ₹8,000 to ₹80,000 on our rates guide. Route C is priced as paid usage, and wider or longer rights cost more. Influencer whitelisting cost in India builds the totals.
Mistakes that block or weaken the ad
- Briefing for organic only. The creator picks a trending track and bakes captions across the bottom.
- Licensed music. Meta lists copyrighted music as unsupported in partnership Reels unless the advertiser holds the rights.
- A link sticker on a Story. Meta says it blocks the Story from becoming a partnership ad.
- Label in the margin. It sits where the profile icon and button will cover it.
- Editing out the label. A trim that removes it breaks the rules for the creator and for you.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a partnership ad and a brand-handle ad with creator content?
A partnership ad runs under the creator's handle, with your account as a second identity if you choose, and needs the creator's permission in Meta. A brand-handle ad runs only from your account using the creator's video file, so it needs a licence in the contract but no Meta permission. The first borrows the creator's name; the second borrows only the content. See our usage rights guide.
Can I upload new creator media as a partnership ad?
Yes, with account-level permission. Meta says that with it, advertisers can create a partnership ad by boosting existing content or uploading new content in Ads Manager. The creator's name then appears on an ad they never posted organically, so approve the exact cut with them and keep their label inside the video. See dark posting influencer content.
What video size do Meta Reels ads need?
Meta's Ads Guide recommends 9:16 video at 1440 x 2560 pixels, MP4 or MOV, up to 15 minutes and 4 GB, with sound strongly recommended. It lists licensed music, face or camera effects and product tags as things Reels ads should not contain. Ask creators for a clean vertical master. Our partnership ads setup guide has the eligibility table for partnership formats.
Which objectives work with partnership ads?
Meta lists all six: awareness, traffic, engagement, leads, app promotion and sales. Within them, calls are not supported as a conversion location, and for leads the Messenger and Instagram routes are not supported while instant forms and websites are. Check the objective before you commission a video. Our creator ads page explains how we plan objective and creative together.
Where should the disclosure label go in a Reels ad?
ASCI wants the label upfront and prominent, on screen for at least three seconds in videos of 15 seconds or less. Meta advises keeping the top 14 percent, bottom 35 percent and sides 6 percent clear of key elements, so put the label in the middle band of the frame in the first seconds. See our ASCI influencer guidelines explainer. This is general information, not legal advice.
Should the ad header show the creator, the brand or both?
Meta offers both accounts, the creator only, or a dynamic option that lets Meta choose, and says ranking uses signals from both accounts whichever shows. Meta recommends dynamic identity. Use both for brand-led launches and the creator alone when they are describing their own use. If it matters to you, test it; our creative testing guide shows how.
