In short
- Only the channel owner and invited collaborators post; members react, vote and, if the owner allows it, reply. After the first invitation, only members get notifications for new updates.
- We could not confirm who can create a channel. Instagram's Help page would not load for us, and third-party guides disagree on follower limits and Business accounts.
- A creator can be a channel collaborator who sends messages and moderates but cannot change settings, which makes a creator-led series inside your channel possible.
- Meta's Insights show total interactions, story shares and poll votes. There is no open rate in the sources we read, so judge a channel on participation, not on headcount.
An Instagram broadcast channel is a one-to-many space where the owner posts text, photos, videos, voice notes and polls, and members react and vote. For a brand it is an owned line to your keenest followers: drop alerts, early codes, polls on what to make next. It is not a reach channel, because after the first invitation only members get notified.
This post goes deeper than our Instagram influencer marketing page and the wider guide to influencer marketing in India. We read Meta's own posts and creator pages and separate what they confirm from what we could not check. Instagram's Help Center page on creating a channel would not load for us, so eligibility is the biggest gap.
What is confirmed, and what is not
| Question | What Meta's pages say | Status |
|---|---|---|
| What is it? | A public, one-to-many tool: only the creator posts; followers react and vote (Meta, Feb and Jun 2023) | Confirmed |
| Is it live in India? | Meta's 15 Jun 2023 India post says channels were already live in India | Confirmed for 2023 |
| What can the owner post? | Text, photos, videos, voice notes and polls | Confirmed |
| Can members reply? | Since Dec 2024 the owner can switch on replies under "Allow members to reply to messages" | Confirmed; India rollout date not stated |
| Who gets notified? | All followers get the first invitation; after that, only members | Confirmed |
| Who can create a channel? | Meta's posts point to the Help Center for eligibility; we could not open it; third-party guides conflict | Not confirmed |
| Can a Business account have one? | No source we could open says yes or no | Not confirmed |
| Is the paid partnership label available inside channels? | Not documented in the pages we read | Not confirmed |
| Are links clickable and trackable in messages? | Not documented in the pages we read | Not confirmed |
A search summary of Instagram's Help page says channels were first for creators and select accounts with more than 10,000 followers, and that the feature is not available to everyone. We could not read the page, so treat that as a lead to verify, not a rule.
How it works for members
Meta's launch post says followers can join through a Story sticker, a link pinned to the profile (mobile) or a one-time notification. Non-followers are prompted to follow when they join, and anyone can discover a channel and view its content. Members can mute a channel or leave.
Three things follow for a brand:
- Growth is a promotion job. You earn members by asking for them: a sticker in Stories, a pinned link, a line at the end of a Reel.
- Content is public. Anyone can view a channel, so do not post anything you would not put on your profile. Meta's 2023 post says creators with Subscriptions can limit a channel to paid subscribers; we could not confirm that feature for Indian accounts.
- Notifications are for members. If 5 percent of your followers join, 95 percent will not see your next message in a notification.
Features worth building a plan around
Meta's December 2024 post adds three features. Replies nest under the original message and are enabled by the owner, who can also delete or report them. Prompts let members respond with text or photos for 24 hours. Insights show total interactions, story shares and poll votes, and let the owner set a channel goal with suggested actions.
The creators page adds that collaborators can send messages and moderate but cannot change channel settings, and that owners can run more than one channel for different audience groups. Meta's 2023 India post added that collaborators can be other creators or fans.
For a brand, collaborators are the most useful feature. A beauty brand can invite a skincare creator as a collaborator for a four-week series, and the creator posts routines and polls in the brand's channel. The creator lends credibility; you keep the settings.
Which brands should bother
| Brand type | Good use | Weak use |
|---|---|---|
| D2C fashion or beauty | Drop alerts, shade polls, early-access codes | Generic offers |
| Music, film or OTT | Release countdowns, voice notes from artists | Anything that needs links tracked to sales |
| Edtech | Daily tips and exam-day reminders | Anything needing long forms |
| Restaurants and QSR | Weekly specials for one city | Wide-area reach |
| B2B | Rarely worth it | Lead generation |
In our view, a brand without a few thousand engaged followers should not open a channel yet, because it will feel empty to members. Start with an Instagram collab post or a Story campaign first; see Instagram Reels vs Stories for brands.
Three ways to use creators
- Promote your channel. A creator posts a Reel or Story with the join sticker. Pay for the Reel or Story; the channel is the call to action.
- Sponsored message in the creator's channel. Ask for one to three messages over two weeks, including a poll, with Insights screenshots after.
- Creator as collaborator in your channel. The creator posts a short series you agree in a brief.
For all three, put the deliverables, label, dates and approval steps in writing. Usage rights matter if you want to reuse a creator's voice note elsewhere; see usage rights for influencer content.
What a good channel message looks like
Each update should do one small job. A teaser shows one product detail and ends with a poll. A voice note from a founder or creator answers one question in under a minute. A drop-day message carries the time, the code and nothing else. Keep the cadence steady, two to four updates a week for a brand, since a channel that goes quiet loses members faster than it gains them. Reply to the replies if you switch them on; Meta describes replies as real back-and-forth, and those conversations are the best product research in the channel.
Channels, Stories and Reels compared
| Channel | Story | Reel | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Who sees it | Members, after the first invitation | Followers, plus others through stickers and tags | Followers and non-followers through recommendations |
| How long it lasts | Message history rules not documented in the pages we read | 24 hours, unless saved to a highlight | Stays on the profile |
| Two-way | Polls, reactions, replies, prompts | Polls, question stickers | Comments |
| Best job | Repeat contact with fans | Daily nudges and links | Discovery |
The channel is a retention tool and the Reel is a discovery tool, so a plan needs both. See Instagram Reels vs Stories for brands for the other two.
Labels and rules
ASCI's influencer guidelines apply on every platform. A paid message needs a clear label upfront, and we could not confirm that Instagram's paid partnership label works inside channels. So put the label in the message: a text update starts with "Ad" or "Collaboration with [brand]"; a video carries the label on screen, at least 3 seconds if it is 15 seconds or less and one third of the duration if it runs over 15 seconds and under 2 minutes; a voice note announces the partnership at the start and end. Read the ASCI influencer guidelines explainer. This is general information, not legal advice.
What it costs
We found no published rate card for channel placements. In our planning a channel message is a light deliverable, so we anchor it near a micro creator's Story set (₹5,000 to ₹20,000 in our rates) and adjust for members and reactions. That is our method, not a market price. Ask the creator for Insights from the last 30 days: total interactions, poll votes and story shares. Follower count is a weak guide because only members are notified. The influencer cost calculator models the paid Reel or Story that usually comes with it.
Measuring a channel
| Signal | Where it comes from | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Members joined | Channel screen, plus a screenshot at day 0, 7 and 30 | Growth, and how many followers cared enough to join |
| Total interactions | Insights (Meta, Dec 2024) | Participation per post |
| Poll votes | Insights | Whether members will do something small |
| Story shares | Insights | Whether a message was worth passing on |
| Code redemptions | A unique code in the message | Sales, if you can track |
| Reply quality | Replies, if switched on | Real questions are product insight |
Treat clicks with care: test a tracked link in a message before you plan on it, because we could not confirm how links behave for all members. Our UTM links guide shows the setup.
Mistakes to avoid
- Opening a channel with no plan to promote it. Members come from asks, not from the channel's existence.
- Posting offers only. Mix content and offers or members mute you.
- Treating the channel as an ad slot. A creator's channel is their community; keep sponsored messages few and clearly labelled.
- Ignoring the label because the post is "just a channel message". ASCI applies to every platform.
- Reporting member count alone. Report interactions and poll votes as well.
If you cannot start a channel
If your account does not show the option, run the plan through a creator's channel and a plain Story campaign. For a different owned-audience tool, see WhatsApp channels and creator marketing. If you want us to shortlist creators who already run active channels, send us a brief and our team will return a creator plan within 48 hours.

Frequently asked questions
Can a brand account create an Instagram broadcast channel?
We could not confirm it. Meta's launch posts describe channels for creators and point to the Help Center for eligibility. A search summary of that Help page says creators and select accounts with more than 10,000 followers could start one first, while third-party guides disagree about Business accounts. Check the compose icon in your inbox. If it is missing, work through a creator's channel.
What can you post in an Instagram broadcast channel?
Meta says the owner can post text, photos, videos, voice notes and polls. Members can react and vote in polls. Since December 2024 owners can also switch on replies, which nest under the original message, and post prompts that members answer with text or photos for 24 hours. Collaborators can message and moderate.
Do people get notified of every channel message?
Not exactly. Meta's launch post says all followers get the first invitation, and after that only members of the channel get notifications for new updates. Members can mute a channel or leave. So your reach depends on how many followers actually join, which is why you promote the join link with a Story sticker or profile pin.
How much does it cost to use a creator's broadcast channel?
We found no published rate for channel placements. We price it as a small add-on, in the range of a micro creator's Story set (₹5,000 to ₹20,000 in our influencer rates guide), then adjust for the number of members and how many react to posts. Ask for Insights screenshots before agreeing.
Do sponsored channel messages need a label in India?
Yes. ASCI's influencer guidelines apply on every platform, and we could not confirm that Instagram's paid partnership label works in channels. Put a clear label such as Ad or Collaboration at the start of a text message, on the visual of a video, and announce it at the start and end of a voice note. See the ASCI influencer guidelines explainer.
How is an Instagram channel different from a WhatsApp channel?
Instagram's channel is a feature inside an app where followers already watch Reels and Stories, and Meta says anyone can discover a channel and view its content. A WhatsApp channel lives in a separate Updates tab, and followers' phone numbers stay hidden from admins. We compare them in our guide to WhatsApp channels for creator marketing.
