In short
- Two routes exist: creator partnerships boost, which runs the ad from the creator's channel after brand partner access, or an ordinary ad from your channel using a licensed file.
- Google puts the rights duty on you. It says the advertiser must secure sufficient rights to use a creator video as an ad, which may need a separate agreement.
- The video must be public or unlisted. Private, deleted or age-restricted videos are disapproved, and so is a video edited after the ad was created.
- Write the contract around those rules: access accepted within days, video kept live and unedited for the window, and access not withdrawn mid-flight.
A creator's YouTube video becomes an ad in one of two ways. Through creator partnerships boost, the ad runs from the creator's channel after the creator gives your brand partner access. Or you license the file, upload it to your own channel and run it as an ordinary video ad. The first borrows the creator's channel; the second borrows only the content. Google's video rules, and your contract, must cover both.
Our YouTube influencer marketing service explains how we cast YouTube creators, and our post on YouTube BrandConnect in India covers the discovery tool and what is and is not confirmed. This post is the paid side: the formats, the rules and the clauses. It sits beside our Meta-focused creator ads and whitelisting service and the wider guide to influencer marketing in India. Menu names change, so confirm each step in YouTube Studio and Google Ads.
Two routes side by side
YouTube's blog of 23 March 2026 says creator partnerships boost was formerly called partnership ads, and ties it to Demand Gen, Video reach and Video view campaigns.
| Creator partnerships boost | Ordinary ad from your channel | |
|---|---|---|
| Whose channel runs the ad | The creator's | Yours; Shorts ads use the advertiser's channel name and description |
| Permission | Brand partner access: you request it, or the creator shares it by selecting your reported brand deal or by a code | A licence in your contract; no YouTube permission step |
| Where the video lives | The creator's channel, public or unlisted | Your channel, public or unlisted; an unlisted ad does not show the channel logo, name or information |
| What you can see | Organic and paid metrics once access is shared, plus data segments from organic viewing | Your own channel's data |
| Can the creator withdraw | Yes, at any time | Only as your contract allows |
| Rights | Google says you must secure sufficient rights yourself | The licence is the whole basis |
On withdrawal, YouTube says removing access removes consent to share non-public metrics and to boost the video through creator partnerships boost, though the video may still be promoted in other ad contexts. That is why the contract, not goodwill, has to keep access in place.
How brand partner access works
Per YouTube Help, either side can start it. Creators can select an existing reported brand deal when they upload or edit a video, which any creator can do. Creators in the Partner Program can also search for a brand or generate a code to send you. Brands and agencies acting for them can send requests to any creator after upload, and the creator is notified by email and in YouTube Studio. Once access is shared, a Paid promotion label is added to the content.
On your side, Google Ads Help says creator videos are linked to your Google Ads account before launch. Videos the creator links appear in a Received tab and are accepted automatically. To add one to a Video campaign, search for its exact title or paste its URL in the Videos step. Our habit is to ask creators to select your reported brand deal at upload, so access arrives with the video and not in a chat message three days later.
Where each campaign type can use creator videos
Google's page lists which campaign types support running organic creator videos and which also support the co-branded partnership ad format.
| Campaign type | Run ads with organic creator videos | Co-branded partnership ad format |
|---|---|---|
| Video action | Yes | No |
| Demand Gen | Yes | Yes, in-feed and Shorts |
| Video reach | Yes | Yes, Shorts, in-feed and Shorts on living-room screens |
| Video view | Yes | Yes, same placements as Video reach |
| App | Yes | Yes, iOS only |
| Performance Max | Yes | No |
Google's page lists no countries. We could not confirm from it which Indian advertisers can use the format today, so ask your Google representative before you plan a launch around it.
Which creator video fits which format
| Format | What Google publishes | What fits creator content |
|---|---|---|
| Shorts ads | 9:16 recommended; up to 3 minutes, but only the first 60 seconds play in the feed; under 60 seconds recommended, 10 to 30 for action-oriented ads; the button appears at 3 seconds in Demand Gen, App and Performance Max and at 10 seconds in Video view and Video reach | A creator's own Short, or a vertical cut of a longer video |
| In-feed | Thumbnail and text; the viewer clicks to watch on the watch page; no maximum length; you pay on a click to watch, or after 10 seconds of autoplay in Video view | A creator review whose thumbnail and title earn the click |
| Skippable in-stream | Viewers can skip after 5 seconds; no maximum length, under 3 minutes recommended | A cut with the claim inside the first five seconds |
| Bumper | Non-skippable, 5 to 6 seconds | One line: a price, a pack shot, the creator's verdict |
| Non-skippable in-stream | 15 to 60 seconds, depending on campaign subtype | A tight creator story that survives a full view |
A 60 to 180 second integration inside someone else's video is not a stand-alone ad. We could not confirm from Google's pages whether creator partnerships boost can promote only a segment of a longer video, so plan on stand-alone videos or Shorts and write the cut-down into the brief. Our guide to integration versus dedicated video covers which to buy.
Rules that get creator videos disapproved
Google's Unavailable video policy and its format pages set the limits.
- Visibility. The video must be public or unlisted. Private, deleted, live premiere and members-only videos are disapproved until the setting is changed.
- Age restriction. An age-restricted video cannot be used in ads. If the appeal in YouTube Studio fails, use a different video.
- Edits. If the video is edited after the ad was created, the ad is disapproved. You delete it and create a new one with the updated link.
- Unlisted ads. In an ordinary video ad, an unlisted video runs without the channel logo, name or information. We could not confirm how an unlisted video looks in a creator partnerships boost ad, so prefer public for those. Our post on dark posting influencer content covers what unlisted ads do and do not change for disclosure.
Each rule is a contract clause waiting to be written.
Clauses and brief lines for YouTube creator ads
| Clause | Why it is there |
|---|---|
| Accept brand partner access, or select your brand deal at upload, within a stated number of days | Without access you cannot see paid metrics or boost |
| Keep the video public or unlisted for the whole ad window | Private or deleted means disapproval |
| No edits after the ad is created without notice | An edit forces a new ad |
| Do not remove access during the window, except for breach | Creators can remove it at any time unless the contract says otherwise |
| Acceptance includes sharing the non-public metrics YouTube lists | Reporting needs them |
| Window, platforms, territory and renewal price | See our usage rights guide |
| Paid promotion setting selected, plus an ASCI label on screen | YouTube's label is not a substitute for the on-screen one |
| Right to pause on a controversy | The ad carries the creator's name |
Google also advises creators to agree usage rights with advertisers independently, and says the advertiser is responsible for securing them, so a boost without a rights clause is a gap, not a shortcut.
Brief the creator for the ad, not just the upload
Google's Shorts guidance asks for assets that feel organic and social first, vertical and with sound, and says to use authentic creator assets when you can. Turn that into three brief lines. First, state the claim inside the first five seconds so a skippable cut works as well as a Short. Second, say the call to action aloud, because the button may not appear until second 3 or second 10. Third, keep price and offer text out of the video: Google caps ad descriptions at 90 characters and you will want to change the offer without re-editing a file that, once edited, forces a new ad.
Test creator videos against your own
Google's boost page recommends a head-to-head experiment. The control is a campaign with a regular video ad, and the test is a campaign with a regular video plus a creator video. Keep budgets and targeting the same so the test judges the creative. Our creator ads budget split shows how to size a YouTube cell. Organic viewership of a creator video can also seed data segments for audiences, and in Demand Gen those segments can seed lookalikes.
Two reading notes. Google's format table says each of these ad formats can increase a video's public view count, so screenshot the creator's organic numbers before the ad starts and keep them apart from paid views. And judge on the result you pay for, with at least about 25 results per arm as our working rule, as in our partnership ads creative testing guide.
Disclosure
YouTube says that selecting the paid promotion setting adds a disclosure label at the beginning of the video. ASCI also expects a clear on-screen label for the durations its guidelines set; see our ASCI explainer. If you cut a long review down to a 30-second ad, re-check that the label survives the cut. This is general information, not legal advice.
Mistakes that cost a launch
- Treating the boost as a permission slip. Google says the advertiser secures rights separately.
- Letting the creator tidy the video. An edit after the ad is created disapproves the ad.
- Unlisted by default. An ordinary ad from an unlisted video shows no channel logo or name, so preview how it looks before you commit.
- A 90-second integration as the ad. Plan the cut or the Short before the shoot.
- No pre-ad screenshot. You cannot later separate organic from paid views.

Frequently asked questions
What is creator partnerships boost?
It is YouTube's route for running a creator's video as an ad in Google Ads campaigns. YouTube's blog says it was formerly called partnership ads. After the creator shares brand partner access, the ad runs from the creator's channel in campaign types such as Demand Gen, Video reach and Video view. You still need your own rights agreement. See our YouTube BrandConnect guide.
Do I need the creator's permission to run their YouTube video as an ad?
For creator partnerships boost, yes: the creator shares brand partner access or accepts your request. Separately, Google says the advertiser is responsible for securing sufficient rights to use the video as an ad, which may need a separate agreement. Put both in the contract. Our usage rights guide shows the clauses to use.
Can I run a creator video that is private or unlisted?
Not private: Google disapproves ads whose video is private, deleted, a live premiere or members-only. Public and unlisted both work, but an unlisted video used as an ordinary ad will not show the channel logo, name or information. We could not confirm how an unlisted video appears in a creator partnerships boost ad, so prefer public. See our guide to YouTube Shorts influencer marketing.
What happens if the creator edits the video after my ad starts?
Google says that if a video is edited after the ad was created, the ad is disapproved, and you must delete it and create a new ad with the updated link. Ask creators to tell you before any edit and to keep the video public or unlisted for the whole window. Our creator ads budget split reserves money for rebuilding ads.
Which YouTube ad format suits creator content?
Shorts and in-feed ads suit creator content best: Google recommends authentic creator assets for Shorts, and in-feed ads invite a click through to the full video. Skippable in-stream suits a cut that puts the claim inside the first five seconds. Our YouTube influencer marketing service explains how we cast creators for each.
How do I test creator videos against my own ads on YouTube?
Google suggests a head-to-head experiment: a control campaign with a regular video ad and a test campaign that adds a creator video, with budgets and targeting kept the same. Judge it on the result you pay for, and wait for enough results to compare. Our partnership ads creative testing guide sets out the same discipline for Meta.
Can ads change a creator video's public view count?
Google's format table says skippable in-stream, in-feed, non-skippable, bumper and Shorts ads can all increase a video's public view count. Record the creator's organic numbers before the ad starts, or you will credit the creator with paid views. Our guide to measuring influencer marketing ROI covers reporting.
