Influencer marketing for hotels and resorts: an operator's guide to direct bookings

In short

  • Host creators on nights that would otherwise stay empty, planned with your revenue manager. A creator in a room you could have sold at full rate is a hidden cost.
  • Cast by property type: staycation and brunch creators for city hotels, family and couple creators for resorts, wedding creators for venues, LinkedIn voices for corporate offsites.
  • Track direct bookings with a creator-specific code, a tagged link, a WhatsApp number and a front-desk question. Views and likes do not fill rooms.
  • Free stays, meals and spa sessions are a material connection under ASCI and consumer-affairs guidance, and can carry 10 percent TDS once benefits to one creator pass ₹20,000 a year.

For a hotel or resort, influencer marketing works when it fills rooms you would not otherwise sell and moves guests from third-party platforms to your own booking engine. Views are a by-product. The work is deciding which nights to give away, which creator suits which kind of guest, and how to prove afterwards that a booking came from a post.

Our travel and hospitality influencer marketing page covers the traveller's journey, formats and seasons for the whole sector. This post narrows to the property: a general manager, revenue manager or marketing head deciding how to host creators and what to measure. For the channel as a whole, read our complete guide to influencer marketing in India.

Start with the revenue calendar, not the creator list

Before anyone shortlists a creator, sit down with your revenue manager and list three things: the nights where forecast occupancy is below target, the room types that sell slowest, and the outlets, such as the restaurant or spa, that sit quiet. Those are the slots a creator should fill.

The reason is cost. A hosted room night is not free, and what it costs depends on what the room would have done anyway.

If the room would have...Real cost of hostingWhat to do
Sold at full rateThe lost room revenue, plus breakfast and extrasAvoid, or host only a creator whose value clearly justifies it
Sold at a discount through an agent or platformThe discounted revenue, less any commission you would have paidCompare with the creator's fee before you decide
Stayed emptyHousekeeping, breakfast, power and amenitiesHost here

Use illustrative numbers to see the difference. Say a room has a published rate of ₹6,000 and a hosted night costs ₹1,500 in breakfast, laundry and amenities (both figures assumed). Hosting on an empty night costs ₹1,500. Hosting on a night you would have sold costs ₹7,500. Creators posting about a full-priced weekend while paying guests are turned away is the most expensive version of the campaign.

Cast by property type

Different properties sell to different guests, and the creator should look like the guest you want.

The creator's audience matters more than the creator's follower count. A food and lifestyle creator in the same city, with an audience that lives within a drive of the hotel, will sell a Sunday brunch better than a national travel vlogger. We score every creator on the 100-point Gully Score, where buyer fit is worth 20 points and audience authenticity 30. Our micro-influencer marketing service builds that kind of local bench, and our Instagram influencer marketing service covers the format side. A 2026 industry survey, run by an influencer platform, found 93.1 percent of surveyed brands name Instagram as their main influencer platform, so most hotel plans start there.

Track direct bookings

The best reason to run creator campaigns for a hotel is to build direct demand. Set up the tracking before the first creator arrives.

  1. A code on your booking engine, per creator. Pair it with a perk, such as late checkout, breakfast or a room upgrade. Check your agreements with booking platforms before publishing a code that cuts your price, since some contracts restrict that. A perk avoids the question.
  2. A tagged link and landing page. Put it in the bio and Story links, and pin it in comments.
  3. A WhatsApp number per creator. Many hotels take enquiries on WhatsApp, and a separate number tags each one.
  4. A front-desk question. At check-in, ask "How did you hear about us?" with the creator names on a card, and log the answer in your property system.
  5. A date record. Note the post date next to each booking, so you can see how long guests take to book.

Hosting a creator: the operating checklist

Good content depends on how the visit is run. A checklist keeps it consistent across creators.

WhenWhat to do
Two weeks beforeSend the brief: message, claims you can back, label, deliverables, posting window, house rules, drone and filming permissions
One week beforeChoose a room on a low-demand night, brief the duty manager and outlet heads, name one point of contact
ArrivalWelcome and tour, then step back; offer a quiet hour at golden light, without other guests in frame
During the stayOpen access to agreed spaces; get consent from staff and guests who appear on camera
DepartureConfirm the draft date; ask nothing that sounds like a demand for praise
AfterReview the draft for facilities, prices, distances and the label; approve; reply to comments and pin booking details

Brief for the guest experience, not the room. Breakfast, the pool at sunset, the local walk and the staff who made it work are what viewers remember. And allow honest comments. The Department of Consumer Affairs' endorsement guidance tells endorsers not to promote what they have not experienced, and a review that mentions a noisy air conditioner is more believable than one that does not. Fix the fault and thank the creator.

Rules and tax in brief

  • Label every post. The Department of Consumer Affairs' guidance names hotel stays among the connections that must be disclosed, and ASCI lists free or discounted stays, trips and barter. Use Ad, Sponsored or Collaboration, upfront and prominent. Our ASCI explainer shows where it goes in each format.
  • Keep prices and offers true. "From ₹4,999" must be bookable on the dates shown, and an offer needs an end date.
  • Treat the stay as a benefit. Section 194R requires 10 percent TDS once benefits to one person pass ₹20,000 in a financial year, valued at fair market value. Individuals and HUFs below turnover thresholds are exempt from deducting, and a company or firm is not. Track the total per creator across the year. The travel page has a worked illustration, and our TDS and GST guide explains the open questions.
  • Protect guests and staff. Film other guests only with consent, and agree areas where cameras are not allowed.

This is general information, not legal or tax advice.

What it costs

Fees below are asking prices from the benchmarks behind our influencer rates guide. Add the cost of the rooms and meals you host.

Building blockPlanning range
Nano creator: Reel or Story set, often with a stay₹2,000 to ₹10,000 per Reel; ₹1,000 to ₹5,000 per Story set
Micro creator: Reel plus Story setAbout ₹13,000 to ₹1 lakh together, before any bundle discount
Mid-tier creator: Reel₹50,000 to ₹3.5 lakh
Mid-tier YouTube vlog (dedicated)₹1 lakh to ₹5 lakh
Mid-tier YouTube integration₹60,000 to ₹2.5 lakh

Rights matter for hotels, because you will want the footage for your own channels and ads. Usage rights add about 30 to 50 percent, and 30-day exclusivity against competing hotels in the same destination adds about the same. One booking platform says buying a Reel and Stories together usually earns a 20 to 35 percent discount against buying separately. Model your own mix in the influencer cost calculator.

Mistakes we would steer you away from

  • Hosting on peak weekends. You displace paying guests and pay twice.
  • No tracking. "Great views" is not a result. Set up codes before the first stay.
  • The same angle for every creator. Give each a different story: sunrise, kids, brunch, wellness, work.
  • Front desk not briefed. If staff forget the source question, the data disappears.
  • Delayed posting. Agree a posting window tied to your booking window.
  • No value record. Keep each creator's stay value for the tax ledger.
  • Skipping the contract. Our influencer contract guide lists the clauses, including usage rights and approvals.

Wedding season sends couples to your venue and your jeweller at the same time, so it helps to see how the neighbouring category plans, in our post on influencer marketing for jewellery brands. Frequently asked questions

How do hotels measure bookings from influencers?

Give each creator a code on your booking engine, a tagged link, and a WhatsApp number, and ask guests at check-in how they found you. Log all four against the creator's name. Then compare room nights, average daily rate and booking window for coded bookings with your property average. Views are a by-product, not the result.

Should a hotel give influencers free stays or pay them?

Most hotels do both. Nano creators often accept a stay plus a small fee; micro and larger creators expect a fee on top of the stay. Whichever you choose, the stay is a benefit that needs a contract, an ASCI label and a value record. See our barter collaboration guide.

Which nights should a hotel offer to influencers?

Nights your revenue manager forecasts below target: midweek, monsoon, shoulder weeks and your slowest room types. A creator in a room that would have stayed empty costs you breakfast, housekeeping and amenities. A creator in a room you could have sold at full rate costs you the room revenue as well.

Is a free hotel stay for an influencer taxable?

It can be. Section 194R covers benefits given in the course of business, with 10 percent TDS once the total to one person passes ₹20,000 in a financial year, valued at fair market value. Individuals and HUFs below turnover thresholds are exempt from deducting. See TDS and GST on influencer payments. This is general information, not tax advice.

What do hotel influencer campaigns cost in India?

Micro creators (10K to 100K followers) quote about ₹8,000 to ₹80,000 per Reel and ₹5,000 to ₹20,000 per Story set; a mid-tier YouTube vlog runs about ₹1 lakh to ₹5 lakh. Add the room nights and meals you host. Our influencer rates guide has every tier.

Can influencers help a wedding venue or a corporate-offsite hotel?

Yes, with different casting. Wedding creators and planners show real venue walkthroughs, with couples' consent for anything filmed at an event. For offsites, HR and founder voices on LinkedIn reach the people who book them. See our LinkedIn influencer marketing service.
