In short
- Choose luxury creators for taste and audience quality, not reach. A small, well-matched audience that books appointments beats a large one that likes posts.
- Replace discount codes with appointment links, a named client advisor and a private WhatsApp line. Discounts teach buyers to wait and weaken the brand.
- High-value gifts cross the section 194R line fast: 10 percent TDS applies once benefits to one person pass ₹20,000 in a year, unless a piece is loaned and returned.
- Retouching and AI imagery are routine in luxury shoots. ASCI's AI labelling guidelines, signed 17 September 2026, require a label where synthetic content materially influences buyers, but not for routine edits.
Luxury sells desire, and desire is damaged by volume. The usual influencer plan, with dozens of creators, a code each and a discount to push the first order, does the opposite of what a luxury house wants. Influencer marketing works for luxury brands in India when a few creators with real taste and a well-matched audience show craft, context and the boutique, and when the plan ends in an appointment, not a coupon.
Our complete guide to influencer marketing in India sets out the channel; this post covers what a luxury house should do differently. Start with our page on fashion and apparel influencer marketing for how style categories work, and read our posts on jewellery brands and hotels and resorts, which sit closest. Below: what luxury changes, creators to cast, the appointment journey, gifting and tax, rules, budgets and an example plan.
What luxury changes
This framework comes from how we plan such campaigns, not from published data.
| Mass-market plan | Luxury plan | |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | Orders this week | Desire now, appointments over weeks |
| Audience | As wide as the budget allows | Small and matched on city, taste and means |
| Offer | A discount or a code | Access: a private viewing, an advisor, an early look |
| Content | Demonstration and price | Craft, context and ceremony |
| Measurement | Orders by code | Appointments, boutique visits, enquiries |
| Cadence | Bursts | A few moments each year, with a steady undertone |
A luxury house that plans like a mass brand wins reach and loses the thing it sells.
Who we cast
| Creator type | Content | Best for | Watch for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Style editors | Long-form looks, seasonal edits | Apparel, accessories | An audience that actually buys at your price |
| Collectors and connoisseurs | Deep dives on watches, fragrance, leather, design | Considered, high-ticket pieces | They will notice any exaggeration |
| Interior and design creators | Homes and objects | Furniture, lighting, home luxury | Smaller supply; book early |
| Craft and heritage storytellers | Making-of films, artisan stories | Handcrafted and heritage lines | Credit artisans properly |
| Luxury-travel creators | Stays and journeys | Hospitality, travel | See hotels and resorts for hosting rules |
| Occasion creators | Bridal and festive edits | Couture, jewellery | Peak-season booking |
| Celebrity and public figures | Launch moments | Anchor events | Due diligence and conflicts |
For celebrity names, the Department of Consumer Affairs' Endorsement Know-hows say endorsers should not promote what they have not used or checked, and ASCI publishes separate guidelines for celebrities in advertising. Our posts on celebrity endorsement cost and influencer marketing vs celebrity endorsement cover the trade-offs.
We score every creator on the Gully Score, and for luxury we read audience authenticity, buyer fit and content craft first. A short list of three checks sits on top: the creator's top cities against your boutiques or delivery area; the depth of comments, such as specific questions and informed opinion; and whether past brand work looked considered or like a rushed deal.
Formats that fit
- The making-of. A craft story filmed where the piece is made, with named artisans.
- The private viewing. A creator visits by appointment and meets the advisor. The appointment is the point.
- Ceremony unboxing. Slow, well-lit and without a price shout.
- The long review. A YouTube deep dive by a connoisseur, on a considered purchase.
- Years of wear. A creator who has used a piece for a season shows how it ages.
- Event coverage. A launch evening for a small invited group, with each guest posting their own view. Our creator events and meetups service handles these.
- The seasonal edit. A carousel with three looks in one set.
Avoid contests with luxury items as prizes. They attract the wrong audience and a crowd that will not buy.
The appointment journey
| Step | What happens | How to capture it |
|---|---|---|
| Discovery | The creator's content reaches a matched audience | Saves, shares, profile visits |
| Consideration | The viewer reads, saves and visits your site | Creator-tagged site visits |
| Enquiry | The viewer books an appointment or messages | A creator-specific booking link; a tagged WhatsApp number |
| Visit | The client meets an advisor | The advisor logs the creator who sent them |
| Purchase | Often weeks or months later | The advisor's client record |
| Advocacy | The client posts or refers | Tagged posts, referrals |
Train advisors to ask how each visitor heard of you and to log the creator's name, since counter attribution is the most reliable signal in this category. Review at 30, 60 and 90 days.
Gifting, loans and tax
| Arrangement | Who owns the piece after | Tax note | Practical step |
|---|---|---|---|
| Loan for a shoot, returned | You | A product sent for a shoot and returned does not attract 194R, as summarised from the CBDT circular | Signed handover, insurance, condition photographs |
| Gift the creator keeps | The creator | A benefit at fair market value; 10% TDS once benefits to one person pass ₹20,000 in a year | Ledger per creator before dispatch |
| Barter for content | The creator | Treated like a kept benefit | Put the value in the contract |
| Creator buys at a reduced price | The creator | The reduction is a benefit | Disclosure still applies |
The summary values in-kind benefits at fair market value, which it takes to be the brand's purchase price, or its selling price if it makes the item. A house that makes what it gifts may therefore count the gift at the selling price, not the cost. Individuals and HUFs below the turnover thresholds need not deduct; companies and firms must. Payments on or after 1 April 2026 follow the Income-tax Act 2025, which consolidated TDS provisions, so confirm the current section and threshold with your CA. See our gifting and seeding service for how we run loans.
Rules and brand protection
- Disclosure. ASCI requires a clear, upfront label for any creator with a material connection, including gifts and free products. We treat a loan as a connection too.
- Claims. "Handmade", "genuine", "heritage since" and "limited edition" must be true. The 2023 dark-patterns guidelines list as false urgency a statement that quantities are more limited than they are, so a "limited edition of 500" must be exactly that.
- AI and retouching. ASCI's guidelines on synthetically generated content, signed 17 September 2026, make a label mandatory where AI content materially influences consumer decisions, with synthetic ambassadors and replicated likenesses as examples, even with consent. Routine edits, decorative backgrounds and obviously fantastical elements need none. They take effect about mid-December 2026, three months after publication, by our arithmetic.
- Exclusivity and usage. Luxury houses usually want exclusivity against rival houses. Price it and time-box it. See our guides to exclusivity clauses and usage rights.
- Gold and hallmarking. Fine jewellery has its own rules; see our jewellery post.

What it costs
Asking prices, from the benchmarks behind our influencer rates guide:
| Tier | Instagram Reel | Instagram post | YouTube dedicated video | Role in a luxury plan |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Micro (10K to 100K) | ₹8,000 to ₹80,000 | ₹5,000 to ₹50,000 | ₹20,000 to ₹1.2 lakh | Niche experts, private viewings |
| Mid-tier (100K to 500K) | ₹50,000 to ₹3.5 lakh | ₹30,000 to ₹2 lakh | ₹1 lakh to ₹5 lakh | Anchors |
| Macro (500K to 1M) | ₹2 lakh to ₹8 lakh | ₹1.5 lakh to ₹5 lakh | ₹3 lakh to ₹15 lakh | Moments |
| Mega (1M+) | ₹5 lakh to ₹25 lakh | ₹4 lakh to ₹15 lakh | ₹8 lakh to ₹50 lakh | Launches only |
Celebrity and A-list names start at about ₹25 lakh and are negotiated. One Indian agency guide, low confidence, puts 30-day exclusivity at 30 to 50 percent extra, 90-day exclusivity at 80 to 150 percent, perpetual usage at 80 to 150 percent and whitelisting at 60 to 120 percent over an organic post. Another rate card says production quality adds from about ₹5,000 to several lakh. We know of no published niche premium for luxury, so we price from the base card and negotiate rights separately.
Metrics that matter
| Metric | How to capture it | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Appointments booked by creator | A tagged booking link | The cleanest early signal |
| Boutique visits by creator | Advisor logs the creator named | Needs staff training |
| WhatsApp enquiries | A tagged number | Quick to set up |
| Saves and shares | Platform insights | Desire before action |
| Comment quality | Read them: specifics, informed questions | Shows a matched audience |
| Direct brand searches | Your own search data | Slow but telling |
We know of no published India benchmark for appointments per creator in luxury, so set your own baseline in a first wave. See how to measure influencer marketing ROI.
Mistakes we would steer you away from
- Discount codes. They teach buyers to wait.
- Chasing reach. A big audience in the wrong cities will not visit.
- Giveaways. They attract a crowd that will not buy.
- Over-scripting. Taste-led creators lose their voice when every line is dictated.
- Unrecorded loans. Damage, loss and tax questions follow.
- Unlabelled AI. Check what the shoot used before you brief.
- Untrained advisors. If nobody logs the source of a visit, you cannot measure the campaign.
- Mixing tiers carelessly. A luxury house that also posts mass deal creators muddles the signal.
For contrast with the other end of the market, see influencer marketing for quick-commerce brands and influencer marketing for marketplace sellers. Celebrity premieres and launches also appear in influencer marketing for film and OTT promotions. For a restrained plan, send us a brief.

Frequently asked questions
Does influencer marketing work for luxury brands in India?
Yes, as a desire and appointment channel rather than a sales-by-code channel. Taste-led creators show craft, context and the boutique, and the result is enquiries, appointments and visits. Measure over weeks or months. See our page on fashion and apparel influencer marketing for the wider approach.
Which influencers are best for luxury brands?
Style editors with a long-form eye, collectors and connoisseurs, design and interior creators, craft and heritage storytellers, luxury-travel creators, and a few celebrity names for moments. Judge audience quality: cities, comment depth and buyer fit, not follower count. Our celebrity and macro influencers service handles the larger names.
Should luxury brands use discount codes with influencers?
We advise against them. Codes train buyers to wait for an offer and tie the brand to deal culture. Use an appointment link per creator, a named client advisor and a tagged WhatsApp number, and ask each visitor how they heard of you. This is our view of brand practice, not a published rule.
How should luxury brands handle gifted or loaned products?
Decide before dispatch whether a piece is loaned and returned or kept. A kept item is a benefit valued at fair market value, and 10 percent TDS under section 194R applies once benefits to one person pass ₹20,000 in a financial year. A returned loan does not attract it. See TDS and GST on influencer payments. This is general information, not tax advice.
Do luxury influencer posts still need a disclosure label?
Yes. ASCI requires a clear label whenever a creator has a material connection, which includes payment, gifts and free products. We treat a loaned piece as a connection too. Place the label upfront. See our ASCI influencer guidelines explainer.
Can luxury brands use AI models or backdrops in creator content?
With care. ASCI's guidelines on synthetically generated content require a label where AI content materially influences consumer decisions, with synthetic ambassadors and replicated likenesses as examples, and no label for routine edits or decorative backgrounds. See our post on AI-generated content rules for influencers.
How much does luxury influencer marketing cost in India?
Mid-tier creators quote about ₹50,000 to ₹3.5 lakh per Reel, macro creators ₹2 lakh to ₹8 lakh and mega creators ₹5 lakh to ₹25 lakh, as asking prices. Exclusivity and ad rights add more, and production can add several lakh. See the influencer rates guide.
