In short
- Instagram suits discovery, trial and impulse buys. YouTube suits considered purchases, reviews and comparisons. Most brands run both, with Reels for reach and YouTube for depth.
- At the same tier, a YouTube dedicated video costs roughly 1.5 to 2.5 times a Reel on our ranges. Integrations cost about the same as a Reel, and Shorts less.
- India's reach is similar: DataReportal puts Instagram's ad audience at 481 million and YouTube's ad reach at 500 million. These are advertising-reach estimates, not monthly users.
- Decide by goal and price point, then test both with a small split and unique codes. YouTube results arrive later, so judge at day 14 and again at day 45.
Choose Instagram when you need fast discovery, social proof and a cheap way to test messages. Choose YouTube when the buyer researches before purchase, compares options or searches for reviews, and when you want content that keeps earning views for months. Most brands should use both and give each a different job: Reels to make people notice, YouTube to help them decide.
The platforms are not rivals for the same budget so much as tools for different stages of the buying journey. This guide gives the audience numbers (and what they do and do not mean), the formats, what each costs in rupees by tier, how content lifespan changes the maths, the role each platform plays in the funnel, which categories lean which way, a decision table by goal and two sample budget splits. For the wider picture, see our complete guide to influencer marketing in India.
The audience numbers, and what they mean
Both platforms reach most of India's online population. According to DataReportal's Digital 2026: India (mostly late 2025 data), India has 1.03 billion internet users, Instagram's advertising audience is 481 million and YouTube's advertising reach is 500 million.
Two cautions. First, these are advertising-reach estimates, not monthly active users, so the gap between 481 and 500 million says little. Second, other trackers differ: NapoleonCat shows about 525 million Indian Instagram users in February 2026. Pick one source and stay with it, because mixing them produces a comparison that is not real.
| Signal | YouTube | What it tells a brand | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Advertising reach in India (DataReportal) | 481 million (ad audience) | 500 million (ad reach) | Both reach hundreds of millions; reach is not the deciding factor |
| Creator supply | Meta says India has the largest community of Instagram creators and produces more Reels each week than any other country | More than 18,000 Indian channels have crossed 1 million subscribers (Oxford Economics, via Business Today); channels earning six figures or more rose by over 30 percent in a year | Most active creators are on Instagram (3.3 to 3.7 million of 4 to 4.4 million, a 2026 vendor estimate); YouTube has fewer creators but thousands of established channels |
| Brand preference | 93.1 percent of brands in a 2026 vendor survey name Instagram their main influencer platform (Campaign India covers the survey) | Used by fewer brands as the main platform | Instagram is the default; YouTube can be less crowded for brand deals |
| Event example: IPL | About 52 percent of creator content | About 28 percent | Instagram leads, YouTube is a strong second (MediaNews4u, platform vendor data) |
| Short video | About 588 million Indians (61 percent) watched short-form video in 2025, per IAMAI and Kantar | Shorts count in the same pool | Both Reels and Shorts ride the short-video habit |
Source notes: the Meta statement is from a 2025 Meta announcement reported by exchange4media. The IPL split is for one event, not for brand campaigns in general.
How each platform behaves for brands
| Format | Platform | What it does | Shape | Where viewers find it |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Reel | Quick demos, hooks, trends and social proof | Short vertical video | Followers, Explore and the Reels feed, collab posts | |
| Story set | Links, codes, polls and behind the scenes; short life | 3 to 5 frames | Followers, for about a day | |
| Static post or carousel | Detail, comparisons and saves | One image or a carousel | Followers, Explore, search | |
| Dedicated video | YouTube | A full review, tutorial or comparison | A whole video about your product | Search, suggested videos, subscribers |
| Integration | YouTube | A slot inside a creator's video | 60 to 180 seconds | Same as the host video |
| Short | YouTube | Quick clips for discovery | Short vertical video | The Shorts feed |
Instagram rewards frequency and fast hooks. YouTube rewards depth and intent. A person watching a "best earbuds under ₹3,000" video on YouTube has already decided to buy something. A person who sees the same earbuds in a Reel may not have been looking. Different intent, different job.
What each costs
These ranges are the indicative per-post fees we use across the site. They come from the medians of nine published Indian rate cards in 2026, so they are asking prices and not audited deal data. The same follower band is quoted at two times or more apart between sources. GST at 18 percent, usage rights, exclusivity, whitelisting and agency fees are usually extra. For definitions and caveats, read our influencer rates guide.
| Tier | Instagram Reel | YouTube dedicated video | YouTube integration | YouTube Short |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nano (1K to 10K) | ₹2,000 to ₹10,000 | ₹5,000 to ₹20,000 | ₹3,000 to ₹12,000 | ₹2,000 to ₹8,000 |
| Micro (10K to 100K) | ₹8,000 to ₹80,000 | ₹20,000 to ₹1.2 lakh | ₹15,000 to ₹60,000 | ₹8,000 to ₹40,000 |
| Mid-tier (100K to 500K) | ₹50,000 to ₹3.5 lakh | ₹1 lakh to ₹5 lakh | ₹60,000 to ₹2.5 lakh | ₹40,000 to ₹1.5 lakh |
| Macro (500K to 1M) | ₹2 lakh to ₹8 lakh | ₹3 lakh to ₹15 lakh | ₹2 lakh to ₹6 lakh | ₹60,000 to ₹3 lakh |
| Mega (1M+) | ₹5 lakh to ₹25 lakh | ₹8 lakh to ₹50 lakh | ₹5 lakh to ₹25 lakh | ₹2 lakh to ₹8 lakh |
Follower tiers apply to Instagram followers and YouTube subscribers alike, though a YouTube channel's subscribers and its typical views can diverge widely.
Reading across the table (our arithmetic from these ranges, not a published benchmark):
- A YouTube dedicated video costs roughly 1.5 to 2.5 times a Reel at the same tier. You are paying for production time, a longer watch and a searchable asset.
- An integration costs about the same as a Reel at nano to mid-tier and somewhat less at the top of the range.
- A Short costs less than a Reel on these ranges, and the gap widens at larger tiers. Two rate guides say Shorts are priced close to Reels, so expect creators to quote nearer the Reel price.
Published figures for big-ticket YouTube deals sit above these ranges because of niche. One rate guide puts a dedicated review on a 500,000-subscriber tech or finance channel at ₹5 lakh to ₹12 lakh, and a 60 to 180 second integration on a mid-sized tech or finance channel at ₹2.5 lakh to ₹6 lakh. Another guide prices finance creators at 1.5 to 2 times a beauty baseline and tech creators at 1.3 to 1.5 times. One guide says regional-language YouTube channels cost 40 to 60 percent less than Hindi or English channels, which is low-confidence but worth testing in a regional campaign (see our regional influencer marketing service).

Content lifespan changes the maths
A Reel is the right comparison for a YouTube Short. A YouTube dedicated video is closer to an asset. The fee for a dedicated video buys views that may arrive over weeks or months, and a Reel's views mostly arrive in the first few days. That changes how you compare cost.
Cost per 1,000 views is the creator fee divided by views in thousands. The number depends on when you measure.
We found no published India benchmark for how long sponsored content keeps earning views, so we do not quote one. Instead, ask every creator for views at day 7, day 30 and day 90 on their last ten posts or videos. Price the deal on that curve, not on the follower count.
A related check: YouTube creators in the Partner Programme have cleared a threshold of either 1,000 subscribers plus 4,000 public watch hours in 12 months, or 1,000 subscribers plus 10 million valid public Shorts views in 90 days, according to YouTube Help. The page announces updates from 1 February 2027. Partner status is not proof of audience quality, but it filters out the very smallest and newest channels.
Funnel roles
| Funnel stage | Instagram's role | YouTube's role |
|---|---|---|
| Discovery | Reels and collab posts reach new audiences quickly | Shorts and integrations; searchable reviews for people who already look |
| Consideration | Saves, carousels and comments show what buyers think | Reviews, comparisons and tutorials answer "is this right for me" |
| Conversion | Link stickers, codes and partnership ads | Description links, pinned comments, codes and retargeting |
| Content for ads | Winning organic posts amplified as partnership ads | Longer cuts and short clips reused as ads, with rights agreed |
Partnership ads are a big reason Instagram remains the default. Meta says thousands of Indian advertisers run Partnership Ads. In the 2026 vendor survey, 76.6 percent of brands had run partnership ads with influencers and 23.3 percent did so regularly. Our creator ads and whitelisting service covers the process. Check what each platform and your creator contract allow before you assume the same on YouTube.
Category fit
This is our view from running campaigns, not a published ranking.
| Category | Lean | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Beauty and skincare | Instagram first | Visual routines, texture and try-ons suit Reels; see beauty and skincare |
| Fashion and apparel | Instagram first | Lookbooks, hauls and styling; YouTube for try-on hauls on bigger channels |
| Food and quick-service | Instagram first | Local creators and fast reach; see restaurants and QSR |
| D2C impulse products | Instagram first, YouTube later | Fast tests, partnership ads |
| Tech and gadgets | YouTube first, Reels for launch | Buyers watch long reviews and comparisons; tech creators price at a premium; see tech and gadgets |
| Fintech and BFSI | YouTube explainers, Instagram for reach | Explanations need time; check SEBI and ASCI qualification rules; see fintech and BFSI |
| Edtech | Both | Teachers on YouTube, short clips on Instagram; see edtech |
| Automotive and EV | YouTube first | Test rides and ownership reviews; see automotive |
| Gaming | YouTube for streams, Instagram for clips | Different audiences for each format |
Decision table by goal
| Your goal | Start with | Add | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Launch on a fixed date | Instagram Reels from 20 to 50 micro creators | A few YouTube reviews timed to the launch | Reels deliver reach in days; reviews answer questions |
| Low-price impulse product | Instagram and partnership ads | Shorts | Fast tests and cheap amplification |
| Considered purchase above ₹10,000 | YouTube reviews and comparisons | Reels for awareness | Buyers research before buying |
| Content to use in ads | Reels and UGC | YouTube cut-downs | Needs usage rights; see UGC vs influencer marketing |
| App installs | Instagram Stories and Reels with a link | YouTube integrations | Link behaviour differs; test both |
| Proving demand in a new city or language | Regional Instagram creators | Regional YouTube channels | Lower cost, faster signal |
| Under ₹3 lakh a month | Instagram micro and nano | One YouTube integration | Spread thin across both and you learn nothing |
Two sample budget splits
These are illustrations, not recommendations for your brand. Figures are creator fees only, before GST and agency fees, and sit within the ranges above.
| Creator budget | YouTube | Total | |
|---|---|---|---|
| ₹5 lakh | 14 micro Reels at about ₹25,000 each: ₹3.5 lakh | 2 mid-tier integrations at about ₹75,000 each: ₹1.5 lakh | ₹5 lakh |
| ₹15 lakh | 40 micro Reels at about ₹20,000 each: ₹8 lakh | 3 mid-tier dedicated videos at about ₹1.5 lakh each: ₹4.5 lakh; 10 micro Shorts at about ₹25,000 each: ₹2.5 lakh | ₹15 lakh |
Ad spend to amplify winners is separate, and one rate guide puts it at two to four times the creator fee for whitelisted posts.
A four-week split test
If you cannot decide, test.
- Same product, same offer, same landing page. Change only the platform.
- Equal creator quality. Score creators on the same criteria. Our Gully Score splits 100 points into audience authenticity, engagement quality, buyer fit, content craft and brand safety.
- One code or link per platform, so you know where the click or sale came from.
- Measure twice. Check cost per click and cost per sale at day 14 and again at day 45. YouTube's results arrive later, and a day-14 verdict will mislead.
- Keep the winner and test a new variable. Hook, creator tier or language.
For setting up the numbers, read how to measure influencer marketing ROI. For vetting creators on either platform, see how to find influencers in India and how to spot fake followers.
What to ask any creator on either platform
- Views by day 7, 30 and 90 on the last ten sponsored and unsponsored posts
- Audience location, age and gender from their own insights
- Average view duration (YouTube) or reach and saves (Instagram)
- Past brand deals in your category and any exclusivity still running
- Their disclosure habit: every sponsored post needs a clear label under the ASCI guidelines
If you would like a plan that uses both platforms, send us a brief and you will receive named creators and costs within 48 hours. Our micro-influencer service covers the Instagram-heavy end of the mix.

Frequently asked questions
Is YouTube or Instagram better for influencer marketing in India?
Neither wins for every brand. Instagram is stronger for discovery, trial and impulse categories such as beauty, fashion and food, and for partnership ads. YouTube is stronger for considered purchases, reviews and comparisons in tech, finance, education and auto. Most brands do best using both, with Instagram for reach and YouTube for depth.
Which is cheaper, Instagram Reels or YouTube videos?
At the same tier, a Reel is usually cheaper than a YouTube dedicated video, which costs roughly 1.5 to 2.5 times as much on our rate ranges. A YouTube integration costs about the same as a Reel, and a Short costs less. Compare cost per 1,000 views over 90 days, not just the fee. See the influencer rates guide.
How much does a YouTube influencer charge in India?
On our ranges, a dedicated video costs ₹5,000 to ₹20,000 for nano creators, ₹20,000 to ₹1.2 lakh for micro, ₹1 lakh to ₹5 lakh for mid-tier and ₹3 lakh to ₹15 lakh for macro. Integrations, Shorts, niche, usage rights and exclusivity change the price. Use the cost calculator to model your plan.
Do YouTube Shorts cost less than Instagram Reels?
Two rate guides say Shorts are priced close to Reels. The other sources we blended put them lower, especially above the micro tier. Negotiate on expected views, not on the format name. Shorts are discovery content, so judge them on reach and cost per 1,000 views, and keep the long video for the buying decision.
How long do YouTube videos keep getting views compared with Reels?
We found no published India benchmark, so we will not quote one. In practice, YouTube videos are searchable and tend to keep collecting views for longer than most Reels. Ask each creator for views at day 7, 30 and 90 on their last ten posts, then price the deal on that curve.
Can I use both platforms in one campaign?
Yes, and it is usually the better plan. Run Reels to create awareness and social proof, and a small number of YouTube reviews or integrations for brand-new or higher-priced products. Use unique codes or links per platform so you can see which one converts. Our Instagram and YouTube pages explain what we run.
Which platform is better for a new D2C brand?
Start with Instagram: micro creators, Reels and a few Stories cost less per test, and winning posts can be amplified as partnership ads. Add YouTube once you have a product people compare or search for. See our page on influencer marketing for D2C brands for creator mixes and budgets.
