Influencer content for product pages: what to add, where to put it and what not to call a review

Creator content earns a place on a product page when it answers the buyer's last question: how it looks on a real person, how it works, how big it is. Add it with a label, site rights and a page that still loads fast.

In short

  • Add three to six pieces, each answering one buyer question: how it works, how it looks on someone, how big it is. More clips cost load time and clarity.
  • Keep the page inside Google's Core Web Vitals targets: loading in 2.5 seconds, interaction in 200 milliseconds and layout shift of 0.1 or less, at the 75th percentile.
  • Never label paid creator content as customer reviews or mark it up as reviews. Google's guidelines bar fake or undisclosed incentivised reviews on the page and in markup.
  • Buy site rights as a separate line, state the period and add a takedown route. One published guide prices site usage at about 30 to 50 percent over the fee.

A product page is where creator content either earns its keep or gets in the way. Add three to six pieces, each answering one question the page cannot: how the product works, how it looks on a real person, how big it is, what comes in the box. Label them as creator content, hold site rights for them and keep the page fast. Do not present them as customer reviews.

Our UGC creators service makes the clips, and our usage rights guide places site use on the rights ladder as a separate line. Influencer content repurposing ROI shows how to judge a reuse. This post covers building the page itself. Campaign pages are a different job, covered in influencer UGC for landing pages, and listings you do not own are covered in influencer content for marketplace listings. For the wider picture, see our guide to influencer marketing in India. Page-builder and platform menu names change, so confirm each setting in your own tools.

Our guide to finding UGC creators in India explains how to choose people for the first two rows, where the creator's face matters more than their follower count.

Where on the page it goes

  1. Gallery slot two or three. Keep the hero product image first, then the demo clip with a still poster frame.
  2. Beside the size chart. The size or scale clip sits where the buyer is already worrying about fit.
  3. Below price and the add-to-cart button. A strip of three or four short clips, labelled as creator content.
  4. Near the description. The unboxing or pack-contents clip, where the buyer checks what is included.

Four rules apply. Never push the add-to-cart button down the page for a video block. Do not autoplay with sound. Loop muted clips only with captions and a tap to unmute. Show the creator's name and the label beside each clip, not in a footer.

Speed and layout

Google's Core Web Vitals set three targets: loading should occur within 2.5 seconds of the page starting to load, interaction should take 200 milliseconds or less, and layout shift should be 0.1 or less, at the 75th percentile of page loads across mobile and desktop. Video is where product pages usually fall short. Our practice:

  • Use a poster image for every clip, so the page paints before any video loads.
  • Reserve the space for each clip in the layout, so nothing jumps when it loads.
  • Load later what is below the fold, and compress every file for mobile data.
  • Compare speed in both test arms, so a slow page does not hide a good clip.

Google's video guidance adds three points for pages that carry video. It can find videos in video, embed, iframe or object elements. It says not to rely on a swipe, click or typing to load the video, and not to hide the video behind other elements. And it asks for a valid thumbnail at a stable URL. It also says a product page with a video is not a watch page, because the video is complementary, but that such a page can still appear as a text result and an image result with a video badge. We found no published figure for what that is worth.

Label it, and keep the claims honest

ASCI's influencer guidelines are written for ads published on an influencer's own account. On your own page, ASCI's general honesty rules apply, along with its disguised-ads rule: an ad in a format similar to editorial or organic content must clearly disclose that it is an ad, and its examples include influencer posts and paid reviews. See ASCI's guidelines and our ASCI explainer. So:

  • Show a plain label beside each clip, such as "Creator video, paid collaboration".
  • Keep the creator's own on-screen label inside the clip. It survives if the clip is reused.
  • Check every claim in the clip, the caption and the page copy against your claims sheet. A creator's "it cleared my skin" must not become a treatment claim on your page; see our posts on cosmetics claims and food claims.
  • Make any price or code shown in a clip match the page. ASCI's pricing rule asks that quoted prices include non-optional charges.

This is general information, not legal advice.

Do not call it a review

ContentCall itDo notMarkup

A creator's opinion of a free productCreator's view, product provided freeMix it into customer ratingsNone
Customer reviews you collectedCustomer reviewsDelete the bad ones or pay for good onesReview and AggregateRating markup that follows Google's guidelines, with the reviews visible on the page
Photos from customers who boughtCustomer photos, with consentReward them and still call them unpaidTreat as incentivised and disclose

Google's review snippet guidelines say not to include fake or undisclosed incentivised reviews on your page or in your structured data. Its examples are reviews that are not based on a genuine experience and reviews written in exchange for a benefit, such as money, discounts, vouchers or free products, without clear and prominent disclosure. It also says to mark up an aggregate evaluation by many people with AggregateRating, and not to aggregate reviews from other websites. A handful of paid creator videos is not an aggregate of customers.

In India, the Department of Consumer Affairs launched IS 19000:2022, a standard on online consumer reviews, on 21 November 2022. PIB described it as voluntary at first, for every online platform that publishes consumer reviews. It is a reminder that the review section of your page has its own standards.

Rights for the page

Site use sits on level 2 of the usage ladder in our usage rights guide. One published rate guide prices usage rights as a separate line at about 30 to 50 percent over the fee, and our cost calculator assumes 35 percent as a planning default. Write these lines into the contract:

LineDrafting choice
MediaYour website and app product pages, listed by name
Period12 months from go-live, with a renewal price fixed as a percentage of the fee
EditsCrop, caption, resize and subtitle; no change to a claim, no removal of the label
LikenessThe creator's face and voice, only as in the approved clip
TakedownRemoval within a stated number of days of a request or a controversy
HostingThe right to host the file, not only to embed the post

Hosting matters. Embedding a creator's Instagram post keeps their handle and counters, but if they delete it the content disappears from your page. Hosting the file keeps it under your control and needs the right to host.

Test it on the page

Split sessions at random so half see the page with clips and half without, and run the test for whole weeks. Influencer content repurposing ROI gives the extra-orders arithmetic. Read four numbers in both arms.

MetricWhat a movement means
Add-to-cart rateWhether the clips answer the last question
Conversion rateWhether answering it turned into orders
Return rateWhether a flattering clip oversold the product
Core Web Vitals and load timeWhether the clips cost more than they earn

Do not read a test that has not reached the sample your testing tool asks for. We know of no published benchmark for product-page conversion lift from creator clips, and we do not quote one.

Refresh and takedown

Retire a clip when its rights end, when the product changes (a new pack, a new formula) or when the creator is in a controversy, which should mean removal within a day. Keep a rights ledger with the clip ID, the end date, the renewal price and the person who removes it.

Mistakes that cost conversions

  • Autoplay with sound. Buyers leave; a muted loop with captions does the job.
  • Ten clips. The buyer needs three answers, not a feed.
  • A creator quote styled as a customer review. It misleads buyers and risks the platform and the regulator.
  • No takedown route. A controversy at midnight needs a person who can remove the clip by morning.
  • Ignoring page speed. A clip that slows the page can cost more than it earns.

If you want the clips made, the rights agreed and the page test planned, send us a brief and our team will cost all three in one creator plan.

Frequently asked questions

Can I put influencer videos on my product page?

Yes, if the contract gives you site rights, which sit above a creator's own post on the usage ladder and are priced as a separate line. Label the clips as creator content, keep the creator's on-screen disclosure and make sure every claim matches your claims sheet. See our usage rights guide for the clauses.

Can I show influencer content as customer reviews?

No. Paid or free-product creator content is advertising, not a customer review. Google's review guidelines bar fake or undisclosed incentivised reviews on your page and in your markup, and aggregate ratings should reflect many people. Label creator clips as creator content and keep real customer reviews separate. See our guide to disclosure labels and hashtags.

Will creator videos slow my product page?

They can. Google's Core Web Vitals targets are loading within 2.5 seconds, interaction in 200 milliseconds and a layout shift of 0.1 or less at the 75th percentile. Use a poster image, reserve space for each clip, load clips below the fold later and compare speed in both test arms. See our post on UGC for landing pages.

How many creator clips should a product page have?

Three to six is our working range, each answering a different buyer question: how it works, how it looks on someone, how big it is, what is in the box. There is no published benchmark, so test it. More clips add load time and can push the add-to-cart button down the page. See our UGC creators service.

How much do site usage rights cost?

One published rate guide prices usage rights as a separate line at about 30 to 50 percent over the creator's fee, and our cost calculator assumes 35 percent as a planning default. On a ₹6,000 clip, 35 percent is ₹2,100. These are asking prices, not audited data. See the influencer rates guide.

Does a video on my product page help SEO?

Google says a product page with a video is not a watch page, but a non-watch page can still appear as a text result and as an image result with a video badge. Google finds videos in video, embed, iframe or object elements and needs a stable thumbnail URL. We found no figure for ranking gains. See our content repurposing ROI post on measuring reuse.
