In short
- Use Moj, Josh and ShareChat as a regional-language test cell beside Instagram and YouTube, not as the base of a plan. Advertisers quoted by Storyboard18 in August 2025 still call conversions inconsistent.
- We do not quote user numbers: company claims and independent counts conflict and no audited figure exists for 2026.
- Moj has pushed micro drama in 2026 (a ₹20 crore-plus annual budget for one challenge), while Inc42 reported in July 2024 that Josh had cut ambassador programmes.
- Vet by analytics screenshots with city and age split, and put the ASCI label on the visual yourself, since we could not confirm platform label tools.
Moj, Josh and ShareChat are Indian apps built for Hindi and regional-language viewers, and they can add regional-language reach beside Instagram and YouTube. They are worth a test slot in a regional campaign. They are a weak base for a plan that needs sales, attribution you can audit or premium brand safety, because the evidence on all three is mixed.
This post goes one level below our regional language influencer marketing page and the wider guide to influencer marketing in India. User numbers across these apps are contested, so we leave them out and show what you can check yourself.
What we can and cannot confirm
| Question | What the sources say | Status |
|---|---|---|
| How many users? | Company claims are made at group level and independent counts are for single apps and dated. The two cannot be reconciled | Not confirmed; we publish no number |
| Is ShareChat's business growing? | Entrackr reported FY25 operating revenue of about ₹723 crore, flat on ₹718 crore, with adjusted EBITDA losses cut by 72 percent | Confirmed by press reports of results |
| Is Moj investing in creators? | Campaign India (30 Jan 2026): over ₹20 crore a year for a micro drama accelerator, ten grants of ₹10 lakh | Confirmed for that programme |
| Is Josh growing? | Inc42 (24 Jul 2024) reported steep user decline and that ambassador programmes and on-ground events were wound down. We found no authoritative 2026 figures | Not confirmed for 2026 |
| Do brands see sales? | Storyboard18 (11 Aug 2025): advertisers describe inconsistent conversions and weaker attribution than Meta and Google | Reported view, not measured |
| What do creators earn? | No official or independent payout figures we could verify | Not confirmed |
| Is there a native paid-partnership label? | We found no platform page confirming one | Not confirmed |
The wider picture helps with context only: about 588 million Indians watched short-form video in 2025, per IAMAI and Kantar as reported by IANS. That is a market figure, not a Moj or Josh figure.
What each app is for
- ShareChat is a regional-language social network built on posts, images and chat, with communities by language.
- Moj is ShareChat's short-video app, a place for Reels-style clips, audio trends and hashtag challenges.
- Josh is the short-video app from VerSe, the company behind Dailyhunt.
Moj and Josh grew in the short-video gap left by the 2020 TikTok ban, and ShareChat is the older network that owns Moj. Their pitch to brands is vernacular reach in smaller cities. Storyboard18's August 2025 piece lists what brands actually buy there: regional influencer campaigns, hyperlocal targeting, and creator content used to support TV or digital campaigns, measured on shares, comments and challenge participation.
When these apps earn a slot
| Situation | Why it can fit | What to compare it with |
|---|---|---|
| Hindi-belt or regional launch, FMCG or food | The audience speaks the language and the creator tone matches | Same creators on Instagram Reels |
| A hashtag challenge with a simple audio or action | The apps are built around challenges and user videos | A seeded challenge on Reels |
| Festival moment with regional rituals | Local creators post in the festival language | Regional YouTube Shorts |
| Supporting a TV or large digital push | Cheap incremental regional reach | Your paid social reach cost |
| Low-ticket product with no need for tracked sales | Brand recall is the goal | Brand search and survey lift |
They fit poorly when you need tracked orders in a week, when claims are sensitive, or when creators must be verified for brand safety. Storyboard18 quotes advertisers who say conversions are inconsistent, attribution is weak and the audience scrolls for entertainment. Our own plans treat that as a reason to size the test small, not to skip it.
Moj and ShareChat also tried live selling. Storyboard18's February 2026 review reports that a Moj and Flipkart video-commerce effort was scaled back and that ShareChat reduced its live-commerce focus. We cover that format in live commerce and influencer marketing.
Vetting a creator on these apps
Because follower counts are easy to inflate, check six things before you book:
- Cross-platform presence. Is the creator also on Instagram or YouTube with a similar voice and audience? A single-app creator with no footprint elsewhere is harder to verify.
- In-app analytics. Ask for a screenshot of the last 28 or 30 days: views, city, age and gender split. Match the cities to your target markets.
- View-to-follower ratio. A creator with 200,000 followers and 2,000 views per video is a warning sign. See how to spot fake followers.
- Comments. Read twenty: real viewers ask questions or tease; bots write one-word praise.
- Brand safety. Scroll the last 20 videos for politics, abuse, misleading health claims or hate. Storyboard18's advertisers raised creator quality and brand safety directly.
- Language fit. A Bhojpuri comedian will not carry a Maithili festival message. Match dialect, not just region.
Our influencer vetting checklist and guide to reading audience insights go deeper on the screenshots. Pods and bought engagement are a risk on every platform; see engagement pods explained.
Running a hashtag challenge
A challenge needs three parts: a simple action or audio that a viewer can copy in under 15 seconds, a few seed creators who post first, and a mid-tier wave that follows. One brand's daily challenge on Moj, as reported by the platform in Storyboard18, passed 206 million views and 48,000 viewer-made videos, though these are platform-supplied numbers and not independently checked. Treat such numbers as a ceiling.
Brief the seed creators on the action, the sound and the hashtag, and not on a script. Count three things: videos created, views from your target states and comments. The cost of the challenge's paid promotion inside the app is set by the platform and we found no published rate.
Disclosure and rules
ASCI's influencer guidelines apply on every platform, and a paid post must carry a clear label. We could not confirm a native paid-partnership tool on Moj or Josh, so put the label on the visual: for a video of 15 seconds or less, ASCI says it should stay on screen for at least 3 seconds, and for videos over 15 seconds and under 2 minutes, for one third of the video. The label may be in English or in the language of the ad, so a Hindi or Tamil label is acceptable if it is easy to understand. Read the ASCI influencer guidelines explainer. This is general information, not legal advice.
Questions to put to the app's brand team
If a regional app's sales team pitches you, ask for answers in writing:
- Audited audience. Which independent source verifies the monthly users of this app alone, by state and language? Company group totals are not an answer.
- Pricing of paid challenges. What is the rate, what does it include, and what happens if it under-delivers?
- Reporting. Will you receive views, completion rate and views by state, and in what format?
- Brand safety. Which controls apply, and can you see the third-party verification? The platform told Storyboard18 that a verification firm certified 99.9 percent of brand impressions as brand-safe. Ask for the report.
- Creator list. Which creators will carry the challenge, and are they paid or invited?
- Make-goods. What happens if a seed creator drops out?
Written answers also protect you if the numbers are questioned later.
What it costs
We could not find a published rate card for Moj, Josh or ShareChat creators and we will not guess one. One rate source says regional-language YouTube channels cost 40 to 60 percent less than Hindi or English channels, but we have no equivalent figure for these apps. A practical approach:
- ask each creator for their Instagram Reel fee and their in-app fee;
- use the micro range in our influencer rates guide (₹8,000 to ₹80,000 per Reel) as an anchor, not a price;
- test with a small cell before you commit a regional budget;
- pay for the audience you verified, not the follower count.
You can model the Instagram side in the cost calculator.
The control cell is the point: it tells you whether the regional app is cheaper reach or just different reach.
Where these apps sit in a regional plan
Most regional campaigns still run through Instagram and YouTube because the tools, measurement and creator supply are deeper. Meta says India has the largest community of Instagram creators in the world. Use the apps in this post for incremental reach, and read regional vs national influencer campaigns and how to find local influencers in your city for the creator side. Snapchat also courts regional creators; see Snapchat influencer marketing in India.

Frequently asked questions
Is Moj still active in India?
Yes. In January 2026 Campaign India reported that Moj committed over ₹20 crore a year to a Micro Drama Challenge accelerator, with ten grants of ₹10 lakh for vertical drama series. That shows investment in new formats. It does not tell us user numbers or creator payouts, which we could not confirm. See our guide to regional influencer marketing.
How many users do Moj, Josh and ShareChat have?
We cannot give a reliable number. ShareChat and VerSe publish monthly-user claims at group level, while independent reports count individual apps and are dated. The figures differ by a wide margin and none is audited for 2026. Ask each creator for analytics from the app itself, with city and age breakdowns, and judge the audience, not the platform headline.
Can brands run performance campaigns on Moj or Josh?
Storyboard18 reported in August 2025 that advertisers describe conversions as inconsistent, attribution tools as weaker than those from Meta and Google, and users as scrolling for entertainment, not to buy. Treat these apps as brand-building and regional reach. If you need sales, test a small cell and compare cost per order with Instagram. See influencer marketing vs paid ads.
How much do Moj and Josh creators charge?
We could not source a published rate card for either app, and we do not quote one. Ask the creator for their Instagram Reel fee and their in-app fee, and compare with the micro range of ₹8,000 to ₹80,000 per Reel in our influencer rates guide. One rate source says regional-language YouTube channels cost 40 to 60 percent less than Hindi or English ones.
Do Moj and Josh creators need to disclose paid posts?
Yes. ASCI's influencer guidelines apply on every platform. We could not confirm a native paid-partnership label on either app, so put a clear label such as Ad or Collaboration on the video itself. For a video of 15 seconds or less it must stay on screen for at least 3 seconds. See our ASCI influencer guidelines explainer.
Are regional apps better than Instagram for Hindi and regional content?
Not as a rule. Meta says India has the world's largest community of Instagram creators, and many regional creators post on Instagram and YouTube Shorts as well. Regional apps can add reach among viewers who are not on those platforms. Run both in the same test and let cost per 1,000 views and your own sales decide.
