WhatsApp Channels and creator marketing in India: what brands can buy, and what you cannot see

A WhatsApp Channel is a one-way broadcast that a creator runs inside the Updates tab. Brands can sponsor updates and promote channels, but followers stay anonymous and history is short. This guide separates what Meta confirms from what it does not.

In short

  • WhatsApp launched Channels in India on 13 September 2023. Admins post text, photos, videos, stickers and polls, and followers' phone numbers stay hidden from admins and other followers.
  • Meta's 2023 posts say updates are stored for up to 30 days, so a sponsored update has no long tail. Ask the creator to archive it, and budget for a short window.
  • Meta's September 2025 India post says subscriptions, promoted channels and Status ads would reach India over the following months. We could not confirm a live date or fee terms.
  • Because you cannot see followers, measure with a unique code and a tracked link, and capture leads with consent on your own site.

A WhatsApp Channel is a one-way broadcast: an admin posts, and followers read, react and vote. For creator marketing it gives a creator a direct line to people who chose to follow, inside an app people already use to talk to friends and family. It also has hard limits. Followers are anonymous, history is short and we could not confirm several monetisation terms for India.

This post goes one level below our guide to influencer marketing in India and sits beside our regional influencer marketing work, because a text-first broadcast tool suits creators who work in regional languages. We read Meta's and WhatsApp's own posts and list what we could not check.

How a channel works

Admins choose who may follow and whether the channel appears in the directory, which filters by country and lists new, most active and popular channels. Admins can block forwards and screenshots, and a forwarded update carries a link back to the channel. Meta says the Updates tab is used by 1.5 billion people a day worldwide, though it gives no India split and the number is not a channel audience.

In India the early adopters were celebrities and sports teams at launch, and by 2024 Meta was highlighting athletes who started channels to share behind-the-scenes content. That tells you the format's first job: a fan club with exclusive information, not a shop window.

What brands can buy

OptionWhat it isWhen it fits
Sponsored update in a creator's channelThe creator posts one to three updates for your brandLaunches, restock alerts, codes for a loyal audience
Creator drives followers to your channelA Story or Reel with a join linkYou own a channel and want members
Promoted channelA paid placement in the directory, announced by Meta in June 2025Growing a channel you own; terms unconfirmed
Status adsAds in the Updates tab that start a chat with your businessA direct-response test, separate from creators
Channel subscriptionsA monthly fee for exclusive updatesCreator-side monetisation; India terms unconfirmed

Meta's India post of September 2025 named three advertisers using Status ads and one using promoted channels. Those are examples of use, not performance claims. We would treat anything beyond the sponsored update and the creator-driven join link as a test, because terms for the rest were not available to us.

What you cannot see, and what to do about it

Followers are anonymous. You cannot export a list, retarget followers or call them. That is a privacy feature, and it changes how you plan:

  1. Measure with codes and links. One discount code and one tracked link per creator and per update. See UTM links for influencer campaigns.
  2. Capture leads on your own page. Send people to a form or landing page and ask for consent there. Our guide to data protection in influencer marketing covers what to say.
  3. Ask the creator what the app shows them. Request a screenshot of views and reactions on the last five updates before you pay. We have not confirmed exactly which numbers the app shows to admins, so ask.
  4. Plan for a short window. With updates kept for up to 30 days per Meta's 2023 posts, a sponsored update has a week of real life. Ask for a screenshot or screen recording for your own records, and agree usage rights if you want to reuse the creator's words; see usage rights for influencer content.

What a creator's channel is good for

Creators who run channels use them for four things, and your brief should fit one of them:

  • Alerts: a restock, a drop time, a sale start. Short, time-bound, easy to act on.
  • Inside access: behind-the-scenes content and early looks, which is what Meta's athlete examples show.
  • Picks and lists: a weekly set of recommended products, with the creator's reason for each.
  • Daily utility: exam dates, recipes, fitness tips, deal alerts. These give followers a reason to keep the channel and not mute it.

A brand message sits best inside the third and fourth uses, where the creator already recommends things. It sits worst inside the second, where followers joined for access to the person.

Questions to ask the creator before you book

  1. How many updates have you posted in the last 30 days, and how many views and reactions did the last five get, per the app?
  2. Have you posted sponsored updates before, and how many a month?
  3. Which language and city are your followers in, as far as you know?
  4. Can you archive each update for me, since history is short?
  5. Will you add the label at the start of the update?
  6. Will you drive followers from Instagram or YouTube, and with what link?
  7. Do you also run a Story or Reel I can bundle?

A good sponsored update

Keep it short and give a reason to act now.

  • Text with one line of context. A creator's own words about why they picked the product, the label first, then a link.
  • A photo or a 20 to 30 second video if the product needs to be seen.
  • A poll if you want to know which shade, flavour or colour the audience prefers.
  • A code that expires within a week, since both attention and the storage window are short.

Avoid a wall of text. Channels are read on a phone between chats. Avoid sending more than one sponsored update a week from any creator, or the channel becomes an advert and followers leave.

Labels and rules

ASCI's influencer guidelines apply in every digital medium, and we could not confirm a native paid-partnership tool in channels. Put the label in the update: text starts with "Ad" or "Collaboration with [brand]", video carries the label on screen (at least 3 seconds if the video is 15 seconds or less, one third of the video if it is over 15 seconds and under 2 minutes), and audio is announced at the start and end. If the creator discusses health or finance, ASCI's Addendum II also requires credentials upfront. See the ASCI influencer guidelines explainer. This is general information, not legal advice.

What it costs

We found no published rate card for WhatsApp Channel placements and no fee terms for subscriptions or promoted channels, so we do not quote one. A fair way to price it:

  • Bundle it. Ask for one or two channel updates inside a Story or Reel deal and price the update as a light add-on. Our micro Story set range is ₹5,000 to ₹20,000 in the influencer rates guide, which gives you a ceiling to compare against.
  • Compare cost per 1,000 views. Divide the fee by the views the admin screenshot shows, and compare with the same creator's Story.
  • Pay for the audience you verified. Follower count on a channel tells you little unless the admin can show views per update.

You can model the Story or Reel part in the cost calculator.

WhatsApp and Instagram channels

WhatsApp ChannelInstagram broadcast channel
Who postsAdminsThe owner and invited collaborators
Where it sitsUpdates tab, separate from chatsInstagram inbox
DiscoveryDirectory, filtered by country; admin chooses listingAnyone can discover and view (Meta, 2023)
Followers visible to the ownerNo phone numbers shownNot documented in the pages we read
HistoryUp to 30 days (Meta, 2023)Not documented in the pages we read
Two-wayReactions and pollsReactions, polls and, if enabled, replies and prompts

The two work together: a creator uses Instagram to find fans and WhatsApp to keep them. See Instagram broadcast channels for brands for the other side.

When not to use it

Skip channels when you need tracked sales in a day, when you need to know who your followers are, or when the creator cannot show you per-update views. A Reel or a Story will serve better; see Instagram Reels vs Stories for brands and micro and nano influencer marketing.

If you want us to find creators with active channels in your language and city and quote the cost, send us a brief and our team will return a creator plan within 48 hours.

Frequently asked questions

Can anyone create a WhatsApp Channel in India?

Meta's September 2023 post said it would make it possible for anyone to create a channel over the coming months, after launching with celebrities and sports teams. We could not open WhatsApp's current help page to confirm the present rules, and we found nothing that sets an India-specific limit. Check the Channels tab in your app. If creation is open, a brand can start one.

Can brands pay to promote a WhatsApp Channel?

Meta announced promoted channels in June 2025, which let admins increase a channel's visibility in the directory for the first time. Its 18 September 2025 India post named Jio Hotstar as using promoted channels. We could not find a rate card, so ask your Meta contact or agency for current terms. For creator-run channels, see our influencer rates guide.

Can I see who follows a creator's WhatsApp Channel?

No. Meta says following a channel does not reveal your phone number to the admin or other followers. That protects people but means a channel is not a lead list. Collect consent on a form or landing page and respect the data rules in our guide to data protection for influencer marketing.

Do sponsored WhatsApp Channel updates need a disclosure?

Yes. ASCI's influencer guidelines apply on every platform. Start a text update with a clear label such as Ad or Collaboration, put the label on screen in any video, and announce it at the start and end of audio. We could not confirm a native paid-partnership label in channels. See the ASCI influencer guidelines explainer. This is general information, not legal advice.

How do I measure a WhatsApp Channel sponsorship?

Use a unique discount code and a tracked link per creator, and read results over the first 7 days, since Meta's posts say updates are stored for up to 30 days. Ask the creator for a screenshot of what the app shows the admin on views and reactions. Our guide to tracking influencer sales with discount codes shows the setup.

Are WhatsApp Channel subscriptions available to Indian creators?

Meta announced paid channel subscriptions in June 2025, where followers pay a monthly fee for exclusive updates. Its 18 September 2025 India post said Indian users would start to see the new Updates tab features in the months that followed. We could not confirm a live date for subscriptions in India or the fee terms, so do not build a plan on them yet.
