In short
- Buy a host-read mid-roll when you want trust and recall, and a sponsored episode only when the story needs 20 minutes. One published card puts host-reads at ₹30,000 to ₹3 lakh.
- YouTube says more than 1 billion people watch podcast content monthly worldwide (January 2025). It gives no India split, and published Indian listener estimates conflict.
- ASCI expects audio disclosure at the start and end of the ad and around breaks. A mention buried mid-episode does not meet it.
- Measure with a code and a short vanity link, then look at days 7, 30 and 90. Podcast listeners rarely click in the moment.
Podcast influencer marketing in India means paying the host of an audio or video show to talk about your brand inside episodes, most often as a host-read mid-roll of 45 to 90 seconds. It suits products that need a few minutes of explanation or a trusted voice: skincare, food, tools for small businesses, courses. It is a poor fit when you need a sale this week from a click.
This guide goes one level below our complete guide to influencer marketing in India and our YouTube influencer marketing work, because many Indian shows are also published on YouTube as video. We separate what the platforms confirm from what is guesswork, then cover the formats, what to ask a host, disclosure, rates and measurement.
What is confirmed, and what is not
Podcast numbers in India are shaky, so we state the status of each claim.
| Question | What the sources say | Status |
|---|---|---|
| How big is podcasting on YouTube? | YouTube's blog (26 Feb 2025) says more than 1 billion monthly active viewers of podcast content, as of January 2025. It gives no method and no India split | Confirmed globally, not for India |
| How many Indians listen? | A 2024 survey of 2,170 people in 10 cities called India a top-three listener market but found only 12 percent engaged. Other estimates run much higher with no published method | Not confirmed |
| Can Indian shows earn through Spotify's Partner Program? | Spotify's page lists eligible markets and India is not among them (checked 1 Nov 2026) | Confirmed |
| What do sponsorships cost? | One rate card quotes bands; no audited deal data exists | Low confidence |
| What must be disclosed? | ASCI sets audio rules: announce at the start and end and around breaks | Confirmed |
| Do brands see results? | Brands in 2025 used podcasts for branded series and satire, but the trade press published no results | Not confirmed |
So treat any agency or show that quotes "India has X million podcast listeners" as selling. Ask for the show's own numbers instead.
The formats you can buy
| Format | What you get | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Host-read mid-roll | 45 to 90 seconds read by the host in their voice, placed mid-episode | Trust and recall at a modest fee | Hosts drift off the claims list; agree a must-say and a must-not-say |
| Short pre-roll read | 15 to 30 seconds at the start | Cheap reach, name recall | Many listeners skip intros, so keep it to one idea |
| Sponsored episode | An episode built around your topic or product | Considered purchases, launches that need a story | Feels like an ad if the host does not believe it; the fee is the highest |
| Branded series | Several episodes or a mini-series you co-fund | Brands with something to say over weeks | Needs a content brief, not an ad brief |
| Video integration | A segment inside the YouTube video version | Demos, unboxings, anything visual | Priced like a YouTube integration; see integration vs dedicated video |
| Clip distribution | The host posts a 20 to 40 second cut on Reels or Shorts | Extra reach beyond the show | A separate deliverable with its own label and fee |
One 2025 example shows what a branded series looks like. A skincare brand turned a host's on-air slip into a branded podcast series with a product hamper, according to trade press. No result was published, so we cite it as a format, not a proof point.
How to judge a show before you pay
Ask for screenshots from the host's own dashboard, not a number in a message. For each of the last ten episodes:
- Plays or downloads in the first 7 days and the first 30 days. Early numbers show the core audience; the 30-day number shows the tail.
- Platform split. YouTube views, Spotify, Apple and other audio apps behave differently, and only some give you unique listeners.
- Audience location and age. A show with a large share outside India is a different buy for a domestic D2C brand.
- Ad load. If every episode carries four sponsors, your read is one of many. Ask how many sponsors and where yours would sit.
- Consistency. A weekly show with steady numbers is easier to plan than one with one viral episode and nine weak ones.
- Back catalogue. Mid-rolls stay in old episodes. Ask whether the ad is removed or stays live, and for how long.
Then listen to three episodes in full. You are checking whether the host would credibly use your product, how they handle guests, and what topics could make your brand look bad. Our influencer vetting checklist and fake follower checks apply here too, especially for YouTube view counts.
Briefing a host-read
A script kills the format. Give a one-page brief instead:
- the one thing you want the listener to remember;
- two or three talking points the host can say in their own words;
- claims you can prove, and claims that are off limits;
- the call to action: one code and one short link;
- placement (mid-roll after the first ad break works for most shows) and length;
- how the host should handle the label: see the next section.
Ask the host to try the product first and to share what they actually liked. If they did not like it, you want to know before the recording, not after.
Disclosure on audio
ASCI's influencer guidelines treat audio like any other medium, with specific timing. For audio, the disclosure must be announced at the start and end and around breaks. For health and finance topics, ASCI's Addendum II also requires the speaker's qualifications to be stated at the start of audio. Put the wording in the brief ("This segment is a paid partnership with [brand]") and listen to the published episode to check the host said it.
For the video version on YouTube, the creator should also select the paid promotion setting, which YouTube Help says adds a disclosure label. Our ASCI influencer guidelines explainer lists the permitted wording. This is general information, not legal advice.
What it costs
Published Indian rate cards are asking prices, not audited deals, and the podcast figures come from one source family, so we treat them as low confidence.
| Deliverable | Published asking range |
|---|---|
| Host-read mid-roll, show with 20K to 200K downloads per episode | ₹30,000 to ₹3 lakh |
| Fully sponsored episode | ₹1.5 lakh to ₹15 lakh (one source) |
| YouTube integration, micro channel (10K to 100K subscribers) | ₹15,000 to ₹60,000 |
| YouTube integration, mid-tier (100K to 500K) | ₹60,000 to ₹2.5 lakh |
| YouTube integration, macro (500K to 1M) | ₹2 lakh to ₹6 lakh |
The last three rows are our standard integration ranges from the influencer rates guide, useful if the show is a video podcast. GST, usage rights for clips, exclusivity and agency fees come on top. Published benchmarks suggest agency management fees of 15 to 25 percent of creator spend. You can model a plan in the cost calculator.
Contract points that matter for audio
- Exclusivity. Ask that no competitor in your category is read on the show for a set window. Hosts will price it; see exclusivity clauses.
- Usage rights. If you want to reuse the audio as a paid social ad, buy those rights in writing. See usage rights for influencer content.
- Make-goods. If the episode slips or the host skips the read, the contract should say what happens.
- Approval. You approve claims in the brief, not the final cut, since most hosts will not send raw audio. Ask for the episode a day before release if you want a check.
The wider influencer contract checklist covers payment terms and TDS.
Measuring a podcast sponsorship
Listeners are driving, cooking or at the gym, so they do not tap a link. Build for memory:
| Signal | How | When to read it |
|---|---|---|
| Code redemptions | A unique code per show | Day 7, 30, 90 |
| Vanity URL visits | A short, speakable link that redirects to a tracked URL | Day 7, 30, 90 |
| "How did you hear about us?" | A field at checkout or sign-up with the show listed | Weekly |
| Branded search | Search interest in your brand name in the week of release against a baseline week | Week of release |
| Episode plays | The host's dashboard, 7 and 30 days after release | Day 7 and 30 |
| Clip performance | Views and saves on the host's Reel or Short | Day 7 |
Be honest with your team that a single show will not prove itself in a week. Run two to four episodes on the same show before you judge it. Our guide to UTM links for influencer campaigns covers the redirect, and how to measure influencer marketing ROI covers the comparison.
When to skip podcasts
Skip them when the offer expires in days, when claims need a tightly worded legal line, or when your buyer does not listen to long audio at all. A short video format such as YouTube Shorts will serve a sale-week push better. For B2B decision makers, a LinkedIn creator may reach the same people faster; see LinkedIn creator content formats for B2B.
If you want us to shortlist shows and hosts for your category and quote the cost, send us a brief and our team will return a creator plan within 48 hours.

Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to sponsor a podcast in India?
One published rate card puts a host-read mid-roll at ₹30,000 to ₹3 lakh for shows with 20,000 to 200,000 downloads per episode, and a fully sponsored episode at ₹1.5 lakh to ₹15 lakh. These are asking prices from a single low-confidence source. See our influencer rates guide for the caveats.
Is a host-read ad better than a pre-recorded ad?
For trust, usually yes, because the listener hears the host's own words and habits. The trade-off is control: you give talking points and a claims list, not a script. Pre-recorded spots keep your wording exact but sound like ads. Many brands start with host-reads and add a short recorded spot only if claims are tightly regulated.
Do podcast hosts need to disclose sponsorships in India?
Yes. ASCI's influencer guidelines say audio disclosures must be announced at the start and end of the sponsored section and around breaks. A video podcast on YouTube also needs the on-screen label. Read our ASCI influencer guidelines explainer. This is general information, not legal advice.
How do I track results from a podcast sponsorship?
Give each show its own discount code and a short vanity URL that redirects to a tracked link, and ask new customers how they heard of you. Compare sales and branded search against a baseline week. Expect a tail over 30 to 90 days. Our guide to track influencer sales with discount codes shows the setup.
Are podcast audiences in India big enough to matter?
The honest answer is that nobody has an agreed number. A 2024 survey of 2,170 people in 10 cities called India a top-three listener market yet found only 12 percent engaged, while other estimates run far higher without published methods. Judge the show, not the market: ask for episode-level numbers from the host's own dashboards.
Can I run podcast ads through Spotify in India?
Spotify's Partner Program page lists the eligible markets, and India is not among them as of 1 November 2026. That limits Spotify-run monetisation for Indian shows, but it does not stop a host from selling a direct sponsorship, which is how most Indian podcast deals work. Many shows are also watched on YouTube, where the creator can use the paid promotion setting.
