In short
- Default to Reels for impulse and visual products. Add Shorts when buyers search YouTube or you already plan a long review. Run both only with enough creators to read each.
- A Short costs the same as or less than a Reel at every tier, about 50 to 100 percent of a micro Reel. Negotiate on expected engaged views, not format.
- Do not compare views across platforms. Compare cost per code redemption, click or install, with one offer and a unique code on each.
- Check ad rights before you pay: Reels with copyrighted music cannot run as partnership ads, and a Short over a minute with a copyright claim is blocked globally.
For most Indian brands, Reels should take the larger share of a short-video budget, and YouTube Shorts should get a slot when your buyers search on YouTube or you already plan a long review. Reels win by default because Instagram is where most brands already spend and where a creator's post can run as a partnership ad. The way to settle it for your own product is a two-cell test judged on cost per result, not on views. This post is the decision; our Instagram influencer marketing and YouTube influencer marketing pages cover each platform, and YouTube Shorts influencer marketing goes deep on Shorts alone.
The channel as a whole is covered in our guide to influencer marketing in India. For a wider platform choice, start with the best platform for influencer marketing in India, and for the stages we follow, our how we work page.
Eight differences that change how you buy
IAMAI and Kantar say about 588 million Indians, 61 percent of internet users, watched short-form video in 2025, across all platforms. That shows the habit is mainstream. It does not say which platform sells your product. These are the differences that do.
| Dimension | Reels | YouTube Shorts | What to do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Length | Up to 20 minutes; Meta says over three minutes is not recommended to new audiences | Up to three minutes if vertical or square | Brief 20 to 45 seconds for one message on either |
| Link | No tappable link in the format; the Story link sticker carries it | Link placement changes; ask for a test upload | Plan on a code and a landing page you can say aloud |
| Paid route | Partnership ad by ad code or account-level permission | Brand partner access to see and boost the video | Write the permission and response time into the contract |
| Audio rule for ads | Copyrighted music makes a Reel ineligible unless the advertiser holds the rights | A Short over one minute with an active copyright claim is blocked globally | Specify original or cleared audio on anything you might boost |
| Views | Views, accounts reached, saves, shares | Views counted from the start of play since 24 August 2026 | Ask for engaged views and average view duration on Shorts |
| Disclosure tool | Paid partnership label | Paid promotion setting adds a label at the start | Label on screen from the first frame as well |
| Price | Higher at every tier | Equal or lower at every tier | Compare per engaged view, not per post |
| Brand-side insights | Tagged partners see branded content insights | Brand partner access shows organic and paid performance | Ask for access before the post goes live |
What they cost, and what the same money buys
Indicative asking prices per creator from published Indian rate cards, before GST, rights and agency fees. They are not audited deal data.
| Tier | Reel | Short | Reels for ₹5 lakh, dearest to cheapest | Shorts for ₹5 lakh |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nano | ₹2,000 to ₹10,000 | ₹2,000 to ₹8,000 | 50 to 250 | 62 to 250 |
| Micro | ₹8,000 to ₹80,000 | ₹8,000 to ₹40,000 | 6 to 62 | 12 to 62 |
| Mid-tier | ₹50,000 to ₹3.5 lakh | ₹40,000 to ₹1.5 lakh | 1 to 10 | 3 to 12 |
The last two columns are our arithmetic: ₹5 lakh divided by each end of the range. They show where Shorts are cheaper: from mid-tier up, where a Short can be less than half a Reel. At nano and low micro the prices are close, and creators tend to anchor at the Reel price. Published guides also say bundled formats earn a discount, with one putting it at 20 to 35 percent, so ask for a Reel plus Short bundle from one creator. The influencer marketing cost guide has the caveats, and the cost calculator lets you test a mix.
One video on both platforms, or two versions
| Approach | For | Against | Use when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Same video, native upload to each | Holds the creative constant; one shoot | Captions can sit under each app's buttons; audience overlap | You want a clean platform comparison |
| Platform-native versions | Fits each feed | Two scripts, two approvals | The budget supports it |
| Different creators per platform | Reaches different people | You cannot separate creator from platform | You are scaling, not testing |
For a test, use the first approach. Ask for files without watermarks, check on-screen text against each app's interface, and put both placements, the fee and the paid-use rights in the contract. Our usage rights guide shows the clauses.
Brief the two formats differently
The same idea needs small changes to survive each app.
| Element | Reel brief | Short brief |
|---|---|---|
| Hook | Spoken and on screen in the first two seconds | The same; viewers swipe quickly |
| Code and link | Spoken and on screen; the link goes in a Story set the next day | Spoken and on screen; link placed where the creator's app allows, tested with a trial upload |
| Audio | Original or cleared if you may boost it | Original or cleared; a copyright claim on a Short over a minute blocks it |
| Cut-downs | Ask for a short version for Stories or ads | Say how many Shorts the creator may cut from a long review you have paid for |
| Label | Paid partnership label plus on-screen "Ad" | Paid promotion setting plus on-screen "Ad" |
Hold everything except the format constant, or the test stops being a test.
A two-cell test that settles it
- Fix the offer. Same product, discount and landing page.
- Match the cells. Equal numbers of creators in the same tiers and audience cities. Six per cell is the floor; see our pilot guide.
- Give every creator a unique code, with a platform prefix such as BRAND-IG-HANDLE and BRAND-YT-HANDLE.
- Write the pass mark first: a target cost per redemption and what you do if each cell beats, meets or misses it.
- Read at day 7 and day 28, since codes and branded search arrive late.
- Decide. If the cells are within about 20 percent of each other, run both and weight the budget towards the platform whose ad rights you will actually use. That threshold is our practice, not a standard.
Read the numbers on one sheet
| Metric | Reels | Shorts | Compare across? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Views | Yes | Yes, counted differently since August 2026 | No |
| Engaged views, average view duration | Ask for a screenshot of what the creator's Insights screen shows | Yes, in YouTube Studio | No |
| Saves and shares per 1,000 views | Yes | Shares, comments and subscribers gained | No |
| Code redemptions | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Cost per redemption or click | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Branded search | Yes | Yes | Yes |
Only the bottom three rows are fair across platforms. A Reel view and a Short view are not the same event, so a cheaper cost per view on one tells you little. See how to measure Instagram Reel performance and how to measure influencer marketing ROI.
Starting budget splits by situation
These are our planning starting points, not benchmarks. Change them after the first read.
| Situation | Reels | Shorts | Reason |
|---|---|---|---|
| Impulse or visual product | 70 to 80% | 20 to 30% | Stories and partnership ads sit next to Reels |
| Considered purchase with a long review planned | 40 to 50% | 50 to 60% | Shorts cut from the review extend it |
| Footfall or local business | 85 to 90% | 10 to 15% | Local Instagram creators and location tags |
| App installs | 60 to 70% | 30 to 40% | Link behaviour differs, so test both |
Disclosure on both
ASCI ties the label's duration to the video's length: for 15 seconds or less, at least 3 seconds on screen; between 15 seconds and two minutes, one third of the video; for two minutes or more, the whole section that mentions the brand. ASCI accepts a platform disclosure tool as a label, and YouTube's paid promotion setting adds a label at the start. We ask for the platform tool plus an on-screen "Ad" from the first frame. See our ASCI influencer guidelines explainer. This is general information, not legal or tax advice.
Mistakes that skew the comparison
- Comparing views. They are counted differently. Compare cost per result.
- Unequal cells. Six creators against two proves nothing.
- Trending audio on a post you plan to boost. Ads can be blocked or ineligible.
- No code prefix. You cannot split results by platform.
- Reading at day 3. Redemptions and search arrive later.

Frequently asked questions
Are Reels or YouTube Shorts better for brands in India?
Reels are the safer default: 93.1 percent of surveyed brands name Instagram their main influencer platform, and creator Reels can run as partnership ads. Shorts are worth testing when your buyers research on YouTube or you plan a long review to cut from. Neither is better in the abstract, so run a small two-cell test. See our best platform guide.
Can I post the same video as a Reel and a Short?
Yes, and it holds the creative constant so you can compare platforms. Ask for a native upload to each, without watermarks, and with on-screen text clear of each app's buttons. Put both placements, and the extra fee, in the contract. Published guides say bundled formats often earn a discount, so ask for one. Our contract guide lists the clauses.
Do YouTube Shorts cost less than Reels?
Usually, from mid-tier up. Published asking prices run about ₹8,000 to ₹80,000 for a micro Reel against ₹8,000 to ₹40,000 for a micro Short, and ₹2 lakh to ₹8 lakh for a macro Reel against ₹60,000 to ₹3 lakh for a Short. Creators still anchor at the Reel price. See the cost guide.
Which is better for sales, Reels or Shorts?
Neither drives clicks reliably, because a Reel has no tappable link and Short link placement changes. Plan for a spoken and on-screen code, an easy landing page and branded search, then add Stories or partnership ads for Instagram. Compare cost per redemption between the two. See track influencer sales with discount codes.
How do I run a Reel or a Short as an ad?
For a Reel, the creator shares a partnership ad code or account-level permission, and the Reel must be an eligible format without copyrighted music unless you hold the rights. For a Short, YouTube describes brand partner access that lets you see performance and boost the video. Agree usage rights in the contract first. See partnership ads setup.
How do I measure Reels and Shorts together?
Use one table with the same columns for both: cost per redemption, cost per click, saves or shares per 1,000 views, and branded search. Treat headline views as context. Since 24 August 2026 YouTube counts a view when playback starts, so ask for engaged views and average view duration on Shorts. See how to measure Reel performance.
