In short
- Published asking prices: ₹30,000 to ₹3 lakh for a host-read mid-roll (20K to 200K downloads, two related guides) and ₹1.5 to ₹15 lakh for a sponsored episode (one guide).
- Our arithmetic: both ends of the mid-roll band work out to about ₹1,500 per 1,000 downloads. That is a pattern in the figures, not a published CPM.
- A download is a file request, not a listen. Ask for downloads on the last 10 episodes, the audio and video split, drop-off at the ad slot and audience profile.
- ASCI asks for audio disclosure at the start, at the end and around breaks. A host-read ad needs a clear sponsor line, not a casual mention.
A host-read mid-roll on an Indian podcast with 20K to 200K downloads per episode asks about ₹30,000 to ₹3 lakh, and a fully sponsored episode about ₹1.5 to ₹15 lakh, according to published agency guides. Both are asking prices from low-confidence sources, and the second rests on one guide. What they are worth depends on what a download means for the show you are looking at.
Our influencer rates guide lists podcasts in one row of a platform table. This post goes one level deeper into that row: the price per download hidden in the figures, how to choose between a mid-roll and a sponsored episode, what to ask a show before paying, and how to measure an ad that listeners cannot click. It belongs with our complete influencer marketing guide and, for planning around it, our influencer marketing strategy service.
What the published figures say
| Product | Published asking price | Condition | Confidence |
|---|---|---|---|
| Host-read mid-roll | ₹30,000 to ₹3 lakh | Show averages 20K to 200K downloads per episode | Low: two related guides repeat it |
| Fully sponsored episode | ₹1.5 lakh to ₹15 lakh | None stated | Low: one guide |
| Pre-roll, post-roll, dynamically inserted ads, clips for social | No figure found | n/a | n/a |
| A CPM or cost per download benchmark | None reliable | n/a | n/a |
We found no reliable Indian CPM or cost-per-view benchmark for creator sponsorships of any kind, so everything below uses the guides' own numbers and is labelled where it is our arithmetic.
The tenfold spread on sponsored episodes (₹1.5 lakh to ₹15 lakh) is the first thing to question. The guide does not explain it. Our reading is that it is driven by audience size, how much of the episode is about your brand, whether the host interviews your founder or only mentions you, and whether the show clears its other sponsors out of your category.
What a download costs at those prices
Divide each end of the mid-roll band by its download range. ₹30,000 for 20,000 downloads is ₹1,500 per 1,000. ₹3 lakh for 200,000 downloads is also ₹1,500 per 1,000. The guides do not say they price by download, and two matching data points can be a coincidence. But the pattern gives you a yardstick: a quote far above ₹1,500 per 1,000 downloads needs a reason, such as a narrow buyer audience or a host who is an authority in your category. A quote far below it may mean the download count is inflated or the audience is small.
| Creator budget | Downloads bought at about ₹1,500 per 1,000 |
|---|---|
| ₹50,000 | About 33,000 |
| ₹1.5 lakh | About 1,00,000 |
| ₹5 lakh | About 3,33,000 |
This is our arithmetic, before management fee and GST. Do not compare a download with a Reel view. A view can be a two-second scroll, and a download may or may not be played as far as your ad. Many hosting dashboards show drop-off, so ask where on the timeline listeners leave and whether your slot sits before or after that point.
Mid-roll or sponsored episode
| Option | What you get | Fits when | Watch for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Host-read mid-roll | 30 to 90 seconds in the host's own words inside a normal episode | You want awareness and a code-driven offer at a lower price | A read that sounds scripted, or a slot after most listeners have left |
| Sponsored episode | An episode built around your brand, topic or founder | The product needs explaining: a B2B tool, a financial product, a considered purchase | Editorial control, the tenfold price spread, and labelling the whole episode |
| A flight of episodes | The same read across several releases | You want repeat exposure to one audience | No published bundle discount; ask for a rate lock |
| Clips for social | A short video of the read posted on the host's other channels | You want a second reach pool | Priced separately; rights for brand reposts add 25 to 40 percent in one guide |
Trade press has listed brand-linked podcast series among the creator-led work of 2025 (exchange4media), but without published results, so we do not read them as evidence of what sponsorship returns.
What to ask a show before you pay
| Ask for | Why |
|---|---|
| Downloads per episode for the last 10 episodes, by release | The average matters, not the best episode, and recent episodes show where the audience is going |
| The split between audio platforms and video | Some shows are mostly watched, so views and downloads are different numbers |
| Drop-off at the ad slot | Tells you whether the audience is still there |
| Audience profile: age, gender, city split | Fit with your buyer |
| Number of ads per episode and your position | More ads in one episode can dilute each of them |
| Baked-in or dynamically inserted, and for how long the ad stays | Back-catalogue downloads keep arriving after release |
| Sponsors in your category in the last 90 days | A rival read last month weakens yours |
| Reporting at 7 and 30 days | Downloads accumulate after release, and so should your report |
Download counts are reported by the show or its hosting platform and you usually cannot check them yourself. Ask for a screenshot of the hosting dashboard, and treat a refusal the way you would treat a refusal to share Instagram Insights.
Brief for audio: talking points, not a script
A podcast read works because it sounds like the host. Give three talking points, one proof, one offer and one way to respond.
- The offer must be speakable. Listeners cannot tap a link. Use a short URL or a code the host can say once and repeat: a unique one for each show, so you can tell which ad worked.
- Claims are approved before recording. The host speaks them in their own words, so check the transcript. Every claim still has to be one you can substantiate.
- Ask the host to use the product where that is possible. A read that says "I have been using it for two weeks" is believable only if it is true.
- Agree the clip rights in advance, including whether the audio can be cut into a Reel.
Disclosure in audio
ASCI's guidelines require a label whenever there is a material connection, including payment. For audio, they say to announce the partnership at the start, at the end and around breaks, in language an average consumer understands (ASCI). For a podcast that means a clear "this episode is sponsored by" line at the top, repeated at the ad break, not a thank-you somewhere in the middle. If a clip goes to Instagram or YouTube, the on-screen label rules apply there. See our post on disclosure labels.
Measuring an ad nobody can click
Podcast response arrives late and in pieces. Use three signals together: a unique code or URL per show, the show's name as an option in your "how did you hear about us" question, and a tagged link in the show notes. Review at 7, 30 and 60 days. Our guides to UTM links and discount-code tracking show how to set these up, and the post on cost per acquisition shows how to read the result.
We found no published Indian figure for conversions from podcast ads, so we quote none. Set your own target before you buy: how many redemptions the fee must produce for the maths to work.
A worked test budget
| Show | Average downloads | Ask per mid-roll | Cost per 1,000 downloads | Reading |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| A | 25,000 | ₹45,000 | ₹1,800 | 20 percent above the band's pattern: negotiate to about ₹37,500 or ask for a second read |
| B | 80,000 | ₹1,20,000 | ₹1,500 | In line |
| C | 1,50,000 | ₹2,25,000 | ₹1,500 | In line, but check audience fit and ad load |
Plan: two episodes on show B (₹2.4 lakh), two on show A at the negotiated ₹37,500 (₹75,000), and a ₹1.35 lakh reserve to renew whichever show produces the most code redemptions. Total ₹4.5 lakh, before management fee and GST.
The reserve matters more than the split. Spending the whole budget before you have seen a single code redeemed is how brands end up with a number they cannot judge.
Contract lines for a podcast buy
- Episodes and release dates, the ad position and length, and the label wording.
- Live period. How long the ad stays in the episode, and the dates if it is dynamically inserted.
- Exclusivity. Named competitors for a set window, priced as an add-on (30 days adds 30 to 50 percent in one guide). See our exclusivity clause guide.
- Make-good. What happens if an episode is delayed, or if downloads at 30 days fall well short of the figure the show gave you.
- Conduct. A host-read puts the host's voice behind your brand, so agree what happens if the host is caught in a controversy. See our post on the morality clause.
- Payment. Tie the balance to a verified live episode with the correct disclosure. See influencer payment terms in India.
Mistakes to avoid: buying on the show's best episode, paying for downloads you cannot see, giving the host a script they will not read naturally, and sharing one code across several shows. Another audience-priced format is covered in our post on LinkedIn influencer rates.
We build creator plans with the quote, audience data and measurement set-up attached to each name. Send us a brief and the plan reaches you within 48 hours of the call.

Frequently asked questions
How much does podcast sponsorship cost in India?
Published asking prices put a host-read mid-roll at ₹30,000 to ₹3 lakh for a show with 20K to 200K downloads an episode, and a fully sponsored episode at ₹1.5 to ₹15 lakh. Both come from low-confidence agency guides, and the second from one guide only. See the influencer rates guide for other formats.
How much does a sponsored podcast episode cost in India?
One agency guide gives ₹1.5 lakh to ₹15 lakh for a fully sponsored episode, a tenfold spread with no stated conditions. Our reading is that audience size, how much airtime the brand gets, host involvement and exclusivity explain most of it. Ask each show what the price includes and compare cost per 1,000 downloads.
What is a fair cost per 1,000 downloads for a podcast ad in India?
We found no reliable published India benchmark. Dividing the published mid-roll band by its download range gives about ₹1,500 per 1,000 downloads at both ends, which is our arithmetic, not a standard. Use it as a yardstick: a quote far above needs a reason, and one far below may mean inflated downloads.
How do I measure a podcast sponsorship?
Give each show its own memorable URL or discount code, add the show's name as an option to a 'how did you hear about us' question, and tag any show-notes link. Listeners cannot click a spoken ad, so responses arrive late. Review at 7, 30 and 60 days. See our UTM links guide.
Do podcast ads need an ASCI disclosure in India?
Yes, where there is a material connection such as payment. For audio, ASCI says to announce the partnership at the start, at the end and around breaks, in language an average consumer understands. A line such as 'this episode is sponsored by' at the top and again at the break meets that. See our ASCI guidelines explainer.
Should I buy a mid-roll or a sponsored episode?
Buy a mid-roll when you want awareness and a code-driven offer at a lower price. Buy a sponsored episode when the product needs explaining, such as a B2B tool or a considered purchase. Either way, test one show before a full flight. We found no published evidence on how many episodes an ad needs, so measure your own.
How many podcast episodes should I sponsor?
No published source answers this. Our advice is a flight of two to four episodes on each show in a test, since one read is easy to miss and a longer buy is hard to defend before you have seen codes redeemed. Fix a renewal price in advance. See our influencer contract guide.
