In short
- Karnataka requires 60% of business signboard space in Kannada, so a store-opening brief needs Kannada on the board, in the creator's captions and in the script.
- Plan five Karnatakas, not one: Bengaluru, old Mysore, the coast with Tulu, North Karnataka and the forested Malnad belt each need their own creators.
- Mysuru Dasara, Ugadi on 7 April 2027 and Kannada Rajyotsava on 1 November anchor the state calendar; Bengaluru Tech Summit anchors B2B.
- A three-store Kannada opening test costs about ₹4.2 lakh in creator fees, before management fee, GST and creator ads.
To run influencer marketing in Karnataka, write for Kannada first, cast creators region by region, and stop treating Bengaluru as the state. Karnataka already has a language rule that reaches shop signboards, a coast with its own language, a north that speaks differently from the south, and a calendar led by Mysuru Dasara. Start from our guide to influencer marketing in India; the regional casting method is on our regional influencer marketing page.
Our Bangalore page covers the city: its five audiences, tech creators and neighbourhoods. This post covers the decisions that sit above the city. Neighbours are in our playbooks for Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana and Maharashtra.
Kannada is a rule, not only a preference
Karnataka's rule on signage requires Kannada to fill 60 percent of the space on nameplates and signboards of business and commercial establishments (ThePrint). The push to enforce it was not quiet: in December 2023, members of a pro-Kannada group protested across Bengaluru and damaged English-language signboards (Scroll.in).
The rule applies to signboards, not to creator posts, and we do not read it as a rule for social media. We read it as a signal about the audience. Three practical consequences follow:
- Store content shows the board. A creator filming outside a new store will capture the sign. If it does not carry the required Kannada, a viewer and an activist can both spot it. Check the board before the creator visit.
- On-screen text should carry Kannada. Offer text, prices and the ASCI label can all be in Kannada. ASCI allows the disclosure label in English or in the language of the ad, as long as it is upfront and prominent (ASCI).
- Hindi is not a default. In Karnataka, a Hindi-first script is a risk to test, not a shortcut to skip testing.
Five Karnatakas
We use the grouping below for casting; it is not an official division. Britannica notes that modern standard Kannada is based on the educated speech of southern Karnataka, around Mysuru and Bengaluru, and differs from the northern (Dharwar) and coastal varieties (Britannica). That one sentence is the case for splitting the plan.
| Region | Core towns | Speech and casting | What brands do here |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bengaluru | Bengaluru and its suburbs | Kannada, English, Hinglish, Tamil and Telugu; see the city page | Apps, SaaS, D2C, quick commerce |
| Old Mysore | Mysuru, Mandya, Hassan | The base of standard Kannada; Mysuru Dasara city | Family brands, retail, FMCG, tourism |
| Coast | Mangaluru, Udupi | Coastal Kannada and Tulu; Britannica places most Tulu speakers in Dakshina Kannada and neighbouring Kerala | Food, seafood, banking, healthcare, education |
| North Karnataka | Hubballi-Dharwad, Belagavi, Kalaburagi | Dharwar-style Kannada, close to Maharashtra and Telangana | Retail, agri-linked brands, regional apparel |
| Malnad | Shivamogga, Chikkamagaluru | Hill and plantation towns; confirm creator availability early | Tourism, coffee and plantation-linked brands |
Cross-border towns need extra care. Belagavi sits near Maharashtra and Kalaburagi near Telangana, so audience insights may show Marathi or Telugu speakers. Read each creator's audience, then brief in the language the audience speaks.
Platforms, formats and who buys
Platform use is not published by state in a form we would quote. Our working view is that Kannada YouTube and Shorts carry long, trusted content in food, tech and entertainment, Instagram Reels carry the younger urban audience, and creator ads put the best post in front of one district at a time.
The more useful split is by buyer. Karnataka has at least three, and each needs different proof.
| Buyer | Where | Creator and proof | Measure |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bengaluru professional | Tech corridors | English or Kannada tech reviewer; a tested comparison | Cost per install or first order |
| Old Mysore and north family | Mysuru, Hubballi-Dharwad, Belagavi | Kannada creator showing the product in a home or shop | Store visits by code, enquiries |
| Coastal buyer | Mangaluru, Udupi | Coastal Kannada or Tulu creator with local references | Orders and enquiries by district |
Our guide to influencer marketing in tier 2 and tier 3 cities explains how to compare these on cost per result and not on engagement rate.

Mysuru Dasara is organised by the state, with a procession on the last day; the state announces its programme each year. The Bengaluru Tech Summit runs 17 to 19 November 2026. Kannada Rajyotsava marks the state's formation, as the Press Information Bureau notes. Our festival calendar holds the national view.
Your first 60 days outside Bengaluru
Most brands win Bengaluru first and then ask how to reach the rest of Karnataka. The sequence below keeps the second step cheap. It is our planning view, not a published norm.
| Days | Step | Output |
|---|---|---|
| 1 to 10 | Pull orders and enquiries by district; mark districts with traffic but few orders | A shortlist of two or three districts |
| 11 to 20 | Cast six Kannada creators per cohort and brief a native reviewer | Contracts, scripts in Kannada, English summaries of every claim |
| 21 to 40 | Go live in one region at a time, not all at once | Posts, codes, creator ads in a short radius |
| 41 to 60 | Read each cohort by median cost per result | Scale, hold or stop for each region |
Read the regions as separate cohorts. A region that costs twice as much per order after the first wave is not automatically wrong; it may need a different creator type, a Tulu layer on the coast, or a dealer visit before the post. The point of splitting is to find which of those it is. Our guide to how to run a regional influencer campaign sets out the cohort table, and the one on regional language influencer rates explains why a Kannada quote may or may not be cheaper.
Writing for Kannada and Tulu viewers
Our regional campaign guide has the review calendar. Four points are specific to Karnataka.
Treat on-screen text as part of the language plan. Given the signage rule, offers, prices and store names are the lines most likely to be read as a language choice. Put them in Kannada on screen, and keep the ASCI label in Kannada too; ASCI allows English or the language of the ad, provided the label is upfront, prominent and easy to understand (ASCI).
Name the region in the brief. A coastal Kannada script is not an old Mysore one, and a Dharwar-style script is different again. Give the creator the district you want to reach.
Use Tulu as a layer. On the coast, a Tulu line can add local trust, but test it in a cohort and keep Kannada as the main language.
Check the brand name in Kannada script. Have a native reader confirm the spelling and say the name aloud before the shoot, and pay on a native reviewer's sign-off of the final video.
What a Karnataka campaign costs
Karnataka uses the same published asking prices as the rest of India; our rates guide shows how they are built.
| Deliverable | Typical range per creator |
|---|---|
| Nano Reel | ₹2,000 to ₹10,000 |
| Micro Reel | ₹8,000 to ₹80,000 |
| Micro Story set | ₹5,000 to ₹20,000 |
| Micro YouTube integration (60 to 90 s) | ₹15,000 to ₹60,000 |
A vendor survey reported by Campaign India puts typical campaign cost at ₹1.3 to ₹1.6 lakh in tier 2 cities against ₹3.8 to ₹4.5 lakh in metros and engagement at 3.5% to 4.5% against 3% to 4%. These are vendor estimates and engagement is not sales, but they support starting outside Bengaluru.
Store openings add a cost that a rate card hides: the calendar. A shop cannot move its opening date, so creators get briefed late. Published rate cards list 25 to 40 percent extra for turnarounds under 48 hours, and ₹5,000 to ₹30,000 for each revision beyond two rounds; on a ₹25,000 Reel, a rushed slot costs ₹31,250 to ₹35,000. Brief early and the premium disappears. Rights add about 35 percent in our planning and management fees run 15 to 25 percent in published benchmarks, and the cost calculator builds the sum. One agency guide says regional-language YouTube channels cost 40 to 60 percent less than Hindi or English ones; treat that as a hypothesis.
Where Karnataka plans go wrong
The commonest error is treating Bengaluru as the state, so the coast, the north and old Mysore never get their own creators. The second is filming a new store before the board is right, because the Kannada rule shows in every shot. The third is defaulting to Hindi or English for a mass category without testing Kannada against it. Two smaller ones recur: using Tulu in place of Kannada, when it works as a trust layer, and skipping a Kannada reviewer, so a mistranslated claim runs in a paid post that is yours.
For a Kannada shortlist and a first region, send us a brief. Our team replies within two working hours and the creator plan follows within 48 hours of the brief call. The nano and micro cohorts described above run through our micro-influencer service, and the consumer electronics page covers the category.

Frequently asked questions
Do brands have to use Kannada in Karnataka?
For shop signboards, yes: Karnataka's rule requires 60 percent of the space on business signboards to carry Kannada. The rule covers signs, not social posts, but it shows how seriously the state treats the language. We script influencer content in Kannada for mass categories and check store boards before any creator visit. See Bangalore for city detail.
Is English enough for influencer marketing in Bengaluru?
For premium tech, SaaS and fintech aimed at the IT workforce, often yes. For food, family, regional retail and mass apps, Kannada usually does more. Run both in a small test and compare cost per result. Our guide to regional vs national campaigns shows how to design it.
How do I reach coastal Karnataka with influencers?
Cast creators from Mangaluru and Udupi who speak the coastal Kannada and, for local trust, Tulu. Britannica places most Tulu speakers in Dakshina Kannada and neighbouring Kerala, and coastal Kannada differs from standard speech. Use a native reviewer and test Tulu lines in a small cohort before scaling.
When should a brand plan Karnataka festival campaigns?
Brief eight weeks ahead for Ugadi on 7 April 2027, Ganesh Chaturthi on 4 September and Navaratri and Dasara from 30 September to 9 October. Kannada Rajyotsava on 1 November suits Kannada-first brand content. Check dates against the state holiday list because regional calendars can differ by a day.
How much does influencer marketing cost in Karnataka?
Creator fees follow national asking prices: about ₹2,000 to ₹10,000 for a nano Reel, ₹8,000 to ₹80,000 for a micro Reel and ₹15,000 to ₹60,000 for a micro YouTube integration. Smaller cities cost less than Bengaluru. See our influencer rates guide.
Can a Telugu or Tamil creator promote a Karnataka campaign?
Only as a test. Bengaluru has Tamil and Telugu communities, but Kannada-speaking audiences expect Kannada. Cast Kannada creators for the main plan and use Tamil or Telugu creators for the specific communities that speak those languages. See our playbooks for Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.
