In short
- Malayalam has at least three main regional dialects, so choose one cohort to fund first, matched to where your stock and delivery actually reach.
- Kerala's calendar belongs to several communities. Onam, Vishu, Ramadan and Eid, Christmas and the Sabarimala season each reach a different audience.
- Kerala has banned PVC flex advertising since 2019, so store-opening and event content needs fabric or paper signage, not flex backdrops.
- A 12-week monsoon-stays test costs about ₹6.8 lakh in creator fees, before management fee, GST and creator ads.
For influencer marketing in Kerala, cast Malayalam-first creators by dialect, build the plan around a calendar that several communities share, and plan production around the monsoon. Start with one dialect cohort, one clear moment and a small budget, and expand only where cost per result holds. The wider context is in our guide to influencer marketing in India, and the casting method sits in our regional influencer marketing service.
Our Kochi page describes the city, its creator scene and its Gulf audience. This post covers what a brand should decide about the whole state before it books anyone. Neighbours are in our playbooks for Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.
What Malayalam-first means before you cast
Britannica notes at least three main regional dialects of Malayalam, North, Central and South, plus a number of communal dialects (Britannica). The Kochi page maps those to towns. The state-level decision is different: choose the cohort you fund first.
We use a simple rule. Fund the dialect cohort that matches where your product is available and deliverable, not where creators happen to be famous. A brand with stock in Thiruvananthapuram and Kollam but not in Malabar should not buy Malabar Malayalam yet. A marketplace brand with delivery everywhere can pick by sales data.
Three further rules:
- Treat communal dialects with care. Speech differs by community, and caricature is the quickest way to lose an audience. Let creators speak as they do and review scripts with a native reader.
- Use Manglish on purpose. The Malayalam and English mix is normal in everyday video. Premium tech and finance brands can run English-first; everyone else should start in Malayalam.
- Do not assume Tamil reuse. A Tamil Reel with subtitles is not a Malayalam Reel. Test cross-state reuse in a small cohort before you plan on it.
One calendar, several communities
Kerala's festivals belong to several communities. Onam is celebrated across communities, Vishu has its own rituals, Ramadan and Eid shape the evenings of Muslim households, and Christmas and Easter matter in Christian homes. A single "festive" plan will miss at least two of those audiences.
| Window | Moment | Who it reaches |
|---|---|---|
| Mid-Nov 2026 to mid-Jan 2027 (expected; confirm with the Travancore Devaswom Board) | Sabarimala Mandalam to Makaravilakku pilgrimage season | Devotional audiences; most consumer brands should stay out |
| About 9 Feb to 10 Mar 2027 | Ramadan, with Eid al-Fitr expected about 9 to 11 March | Muslim households; late-night viewing, food, outfits, gifting |
| 14 or 15 Apr 2027 | Vishu | Gifting, fashion, food, family; Drik Panchang lists 14 April, the state holiday is listed on 15 April |
| 17 Apr 2027 | Thrissur Pooram | Culture and travel creators; temple-festival content |
| From 1 Jun (normal onset) | Southwest monsoon | Stays, wellness, travel, rainwear, delivery |
| Jun to Sep | Kerala Tourism's monsoon calendar of boat races and temple events | Travel and heritage content |
| 11 to 14 Sep 2027 | Onam, Thiruvonam on 12 Sep | The largest retail window; see Onam campaigns |
| Oct to Dec | Northeast monsoon also reaches Kerala | Shoot backup plans |
| 25 Dec | Christmas | Bakery, fashion, stays; see Christmas and New Year |
Dates come from Drik Panchang, Office Holidays, Wego (Ramadan dates depend on moon sighting) and Kerala Tourism. The Malayalam calendar can shift a festival by a day locally. Our Eid and Ramadan guide covers that window in depth.
Production rules that affect Kerala shoots and events
Two rules matter for store openings, creator meetups and event backdrops.
First, Kerala has banned PVC flex for advertising and publicity since 2019, permitting only publicity material made of recyclable media such as paper, polyethylene and cloth (Media4Growth). A creator event with a flex backdrop invites a complaint. Order fabric or paper from a local printer.
Second, the Kerala High Court restricted single-use plastic in hilly tourist areas and at government events and hospitality venues in 2025 (Onmanorama). We could not confirm current enforcement, so check before you plan plastic bottles or cutlery at a creator day.
The monsoon sets the production calendar. The India Meteorological Department's normal onset date over Kerala is 1 June (IMD), and its northeast monsoon report covers Kerala for October to December. Book outdoor days in the dry weeks, hold a spare date, and plan indoor sets for the heaviest rain.
Platforms and formats
Published data does not split platform use by state, so these four lines are tests, not facts.
- YouTube for Malayalam food, travel and family vlogs. A 60 to 90 second integration keeps selling after the week. See our YouTube campaign playbook.
- Instagram Reels for comedy, fashion and lifestyle micro creators, and for creator ads. Our Reels versus Stories guide compares the formats.
- Facebook and WhatsApp for follow-up offers to older audiences once a creator sends traffic.
- Partnership ads by district. Kerala is compact, so district targeting on a creator's best post is cheap to test. See creator ads and whitelisting.
Who buys, and how to find out
Start with your last 90 days of orders by district, then set it beside where each shortlisted creator's audience lives. The two can differ, and the gap is the first thing to fix. Where you sell little, a creator can close the trust gap; where you already sell well, a creator can test whether you win more of the same buyers.
Kerala has a long record of Gulf migration, followed by the Centre for Development Studies' Kerala Migration Survey series (The News Minute). For a brand with something deliverable to Kerala, a Gulf-based Malayalam creator is a separate cohort with its own timing and rules, which the Kochi page covers in detail. Read audience countries from each creator's insights, never from the creator's claim.
Sequence the entry in three phases
A first-time Kerala entry rarely needs the whole state at once. The split below is our planning view, not a published norm, and it keeps the first spend small enough to learn from.
| Phase | Weeks | Share of creator budget | Question it answers |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. One-dialect test | 1 to 6 | About 30 percent | Does Malayalam creative beat your current creative on cost per result? |
| 2. Second dialect or a Gulf cohort | 7 to 10 | About 30 percent | Does the result hold in a second cohort, or was it one voice? |
| 3. Moment-led push | 11 to 16 | About 40 percent | Can a festival or monsoon moment add volume at the same cost? |
Read each phase by cohort, using the median creator and not the best one. Add a Malayalam comment-reading step: product questions left unanswered for two days cost sales, so someone who reads Malayalam should check comments daily in the first week after each post. Our guide to how many influencers you need explains why six creators per cohort is the floor for a readable result.
Writing for Malayalam viewers
The review process is in our regional campaign guide. Three points are specific to Kerala.
First, the same product can need two phrasings. A family in Kozhikode and a family in Dubai may buy the same hamper, but the first wants a price and a delivery date, and the second wants a reason to feel at home. Brief the Gulf cohort separately and let the creator pick the words.
Second, Manglish is a feature, not a mistake. A Malayalam sentence with an English noun is how many viewers talk, so a script that scrubs every English word can sound stiff. Ask the native reviewer to flag lines that sound translated, not lines that contain English.
Third, put the offer and the disclosure on screen in Malayalam. ASCI allows the label in English or in the language of the ad, provided it is upfront, prominent and easy to understand (ASCI). Check how the brand name is written in Malayalam script and how the creator says it, and keep English captions for your own sign-off and for reach beyond the state.
What a Kerala campaign costs
Kerala has no separate rate card; fees follow the national asking prices in our rates guide.
| Deliverable | Typical range per creator |
|---|---|
| Nano Reel | ₹2,000 to ₹10,000 |
| Micro Reel | ₹8,000 to ₹80,000 |
| Micro YouTube integration (60 to 90 s) | ₹15,000 to ₹60,000 |
| Micro YouTube Short | ₹8,000 to ₹40,000 |
Two lines matter more in Kerala than the table suggests. The first is bundling. One published guide puts a Reel, a static post and Stories bought together at 1.6 to 2 times a single Reel, which would turn a ₹30,000 micro Reel into a ₹48,000 to ₹60,000 package; the figure comes from a single low-confidence source, so ask for both quotes. The second is the Gulf cohort. Agree the currency, who bears bank charges and the tax treatment in writing, and ask your CA how payments to a creator based outside India are handled.
Rights for creator ads add about 35 percent in our planning, and management fees run 15 to 25 percent of creator spend in published benchmarks. The cost calculator builds the sum for your plan, and our guide to tier 2 and tier 3 cities explains when smaller towns are cheaper to test.
What usually goes wrong in Kerala
A famous voice from a district you cannot serve wastes the fee, so match the dialect cohort to your distribution. One festive plan for every community misses at least two audiences. A flex backdrop at a launch or a crate of plastic bottles at a creator day invites a complaint and a poor photograph. Outdoor days without a spare date lose a week to the monsoon. And audience claims taken on trust turn out to describe a Gulf audience, not a Kerala one, so ask for country and district screenshots.
If your plan needs a Malayalam shortlist and a first dialect, send us a brief. We reply within two working hours, and the creator plan with costs follows within 48 hours of the brief call.

Frequently asked questions
Do brands need Malayalam creators for Kerala campaigns?
For most categories, yes. Malayalam builds trust and Manglish, the Malayalam and English mix, is normal in everyday video. English-first creators suit premium tech and finance brands. Test both languages in a small cohort and compare cost per result. See how to find regional-language creators for the search method.
When is the best time to launch an influencer campaign in Kerala?
It depends on the category. Gifting, gold and fashion peak around Onam, which in 2027 is Thiruvonam on 12 September. Travel and wellness brands plan around the monsoon from June. Food, family and festive content cluster around Vishu in mid-April. Brief creators eight to ten weeks before the moment.
Can creators from Tamil Nadu or Karnataka work for a Kerala campaign?
Treat it as a test, not an assumption. Malayalam audiences read language, dialect and humour closely, and a Tamil Reel with subtitles can feel like an import. Cast Kerala creators first and test cross-state reuse in a small cohort. Our Tamil Nadu playbook covers the neighbouring market.
How much does influencer marketing cost in Kerala?
Creator fees follow national asking prices: about ₹2,000 to ₹10,000 for a nano Reel, ₹8,000 to ₹80,000 for a micro Reel and ₹15,000 to ₹60,000 for a micro YouTube integration. Add rights, ads, GST and a management fee. Our influencer rates guide explains the build-up.
What should brands avoid in Kerala influencer content?
Avoid translated scripts, religious imagery used as a prop, a single festival treated as if it belonged to one community, and PVC flex signage at launches. Pause scheduled posts if floods or a disaster hit the state. Keep Sabarimala content devotional and leave it to brands with a real link to the pilgrimage.
Should the ASCI disclosure be in Malayalam?
It can be. ASCI allows the label in English or in the language of the ad, and it must be upfront, prominent and easy to understand. A label in the language of the video is usually easier for viewers to notice. Read our ASCI influencer guidelines explainer.
