Instagram Reels vs Stories for brands: which one to pay for, and when

Pay for a Reel when you want people who do not follow the creator to see your product, and for a Story set when you want followers to act. Here are Meta's format limits, what each costs on our ranges and a test that settles it for your brand.

In short

  • Reels reach beyond the creator's followers, and Stories drive action from people who already follow them. That split comes from our campaigns, not from a Meta statistic.
  • On our rate ranges a Story set costs from about a fifth to a little over half of a Reel at the same tier, so they are not like-for-like.
  • Meta says Reels can run 20 minutes but those over 3 minutes are not recommended to new audiences, and Stories vanish after 24 hours unless saved to Highlights.
  • Before committing a budget, run a two-cell test on matched creators: Reel only against Reel plus Story, with unique codes in both.

Pay for a Reel when the goal is to put your product in front of people who do not follow the creator. Pay for a Story set when the goal is an action from people who already do: tap a link, use a code, answer a question. On our rate ranges a Story set costs a fraction of a Reel, which is why the usual answer is a Reel first and a Story set after it, with a test to find your own split.

This post goes one level below the format overview on our Instagram influencer marketing page, which explains all five formats. Here the question is narrower: for a given budget and goal, which of the two do you buy, in what order, and how do you check you were right. For the wider plan see our guide to influencer marketing in India. The audience-behaviour points marked "in our experience" are operator judgement, not Meta data; the limits are from Meta's Help Centre pages on Reels and Stories, and menu names change.

What Meta confirms about each format

Meta has said India produces more Reels each week than any other country (exchange4media's report of the announcement), which means competition for attention is high. IAMAI and Kantar report that about 588 million Indians, 61 percent of internet users, watched short-form video in 2025, across platforms. Neither number tells you which format sells your product.

The job each one does

In our experience a Reel reaches many people who have never seen the creator, and a Story is seen mostly by followers. That gives each a different job.

GoalLead withFollow withWhy
New product, nobody knows itReels from many creatorsOne Story set per creator the next dayReels make the product recognisable; the Story gives followers a way to act
Sale or offer with an end dateStory sets with link sticker and codeOne Reel a day before as a teaserThe window is short and a Story expires with the offer
App installReel to demonstrate; Story with linkBoost the best ReelInstall needs a demo plus a one-tap path

Store or event footfallReel shot at the locationStory with location and codeCode proves the visit
Building a content library for adsReels, briefed for ad useNoneReels are the format most easily reused as an ad

The exception to "Reel first" is a flash sale. If the offer ends in 36 hours, a Reel that gets most of its views over the following week is the wrong shape. Our post on Story link sticker campaigns covers that case in detail.

What each costs

These are indicative asking prices per creator from published Indian rate cards, the same ranges we use across the site. GST at 18 percent, usage rights and agency fees are extra.

TierReelStory setStory as a share of Reel (our arithmetic)
Nano (1K to 10K)₹2,000 to ₹10,000₹1,000 to ₹5,000about 50%
Micro (10K to 100K)₹8,000 to ₹80,000₹5,000 to ₹20,000about 25% to 60%
Mid-tier (100K to 500K)₹50,000 to ₹3.5 lakh₹20,000 to ₹80,000about 23% to 40%
Macro (500K to 1M)₹2 lakh to ₹8 lakh₹50,000 to ₹2.5 lakhabout 25% to 30%
Mega (1M+)₹5 lakh to ₹25 lakh₹1 lakh to ₹5 lakhabout 20%

One rate guide puts a Story set of three to five frames at 40 to 60 percent of a feed-post rate, and published bundle rates for a Reel, post and Stories together run at roughly 1.6 to 2.5 times a single Reel. These are asking prices, not audited deal data. Read the influencer rates guide for how we arrived at them, or model your mix in the cost calculator.

The practical reading is that a Story set is the cheapest way to add a second exposure and a link to a creator you are already paying. It is a weaker choice as your only buy when the aim is reach.

What to measure in each

Do not compare a Reel and a Story on views alone. They count different things over different lifetimes.

For Reels, ask for views, reach, saves and shares from the creator's own insights at day 7 and day 30. Labels change between app versions, so ask for a screenshot of whatever the screen shows. A Reel keeps collecting views for some time, so judge it after a week, not after 48 hours.

For Stories, Meta says a tagged partner can see reach, taps forward, taps backward, replies and exits for 14 days. Three ratios are worth computing yourself:

  • Exit rate: exits divided by reach. A high rate on frame 2 means the hook failed.
  • Forward-tap rate: taps forward divided by reach. High forward taps on a frame with your claim may mean people skip it.
  • Link tap rate: link taps divided by reach, taken from the creator's own insights, since Meta's tagged-partner list does not include link taps.

We found no published India benchmark for these ratios, so we do not quote one. Set your own bar from the first five creators and compare the rest against it. Use a unique code and a tagged link in both formats so you can credit sales to a creator and a format; our guides to UTM links for influencer campaigns and tracking sales with discount codes show how.

Budgeting the two together

Three splits for 10 micro creators, all within the ranges above. They are illustrations, not recommendations.

PlanSpendTotalBest when
Reel only10 Reels at about ₹30,000₹3 lakhPure awareness, or you are building ad creative
Reel plus Story10 Reels at about ₹25,000 and 10 Story sets at about ₹8,000₹3.3 lakhA launch where you also want clicks
Story only20 Story sets at about ₹8,000₹1.6 lakhA short sale to followers who already trust each creator

The second row costs about 10 percent more than the first and adds a second exposure plus a link for every creator. If the budget is flat, use nine creators instead of ten (nine Reels at about ₹25,000 and nine Story sets at about ₹8,000 come to ₹2.97 lakh) rather than adding spend.

Partnership ads change the briefing

If you may put ad money behind a post, the format limits matter before the shoot. Meta says Stories can only become partnership ads if they are 60 seconds or less and carry no organic link sticker; Reels can run up to 15 minutes but cannot use copyrighted music unless the advertiser holds the rights. So brief creators to use original audio, leave the link sticker off the Stories you may boost, and agree the permission method in the contract. Our guide to partnership ads setup has the steps, and the collab post guide covers Reels co-authored with your account.

A two-cell test before you commit

  1. Pick 20 creators in one tier and niche, split into two matched groups of 10 by follower count and typical views.
  2. Cell A buys a Reel only. Cell B buys the same Reel plus a Story set the next day.
  3. Same product, offer, code format and landing page in both cells; only the format changes.
  4. Measure cost per code redemption at day 14, with a second look at day 30 for the Reel views.
  5. Decide, keeping in mind that 10 creators per cell is directional evidence, not proof. Repeat once with a different niche before building a large plan.

For the micro creators you would use, see our micro-influencer service; to compare Instagram with YouTube for the same goal, read YouTube vs Instagram.

Disclosure by format

Both formats need the paid partnership label (see our paid partnership label guide) and an on-screen label. ASCI says a label must be on screen for at least three seconds in a video of 15 seconds or less, for one third of the video between 15 seconds and two minutes, and for the whole section that mentions the brand in a longer one. For images or videos with no caption, which describes Stories, it goes on the visual. The detail is in our ASCI influencer guidelines explainer and in ASCI's own guidelines page.

Frequently asked questions

Are Instagram Reels or Stories better for brands in India?

Neither wins every time. Reels carry a message to people who do not follow the creator, so they suit launches and awareness. Stories mostly reach followers and can carry a tappable link, so they suit codes, sales windows and installs. Most campaigns buy a Reel first and a Story set after it, then compare cost per result. Our Instagram service page shows the mix we plan.

How much does a Story cost compared with a Reel?

On the ranges we use, a Story set is about 50 percent of a Reel for nano creators, 25 to 60 percent for micro, 23 to 40 percent for mid-tier and about 20 percent for mega, by our arithmetic. One rate guide puts a three to five frame Story set at 40 to 60 percent of a feed post. See the influencer rates guide.

How long do Instagram Stories last?

Meta says Stories disappear from your profile, feed and Direct inbox after 24 hours unless the creator adds them to Highlights. A Story video up to 60 seconds appears as one clip; longer videos are split into several clips. Agree in the contract whether the creator will save the set to Highlights, and for how long.

Can a Reel or Story be boosted as a partnership ad?

Yes, with limits. Meta says Stories must be 60 seconds or less and cannot carry an organic link sticker, while Reels can be up to 15 minutes and cannot use copyrighted music unless the advertiser holds the rights. Brief creators for the ad use before they shoot. See our guide to partnership ads setup.

Which format is better for driving sales?

Stories usually do the clicking and code use because the link sticker sits in the format, while a Reel often earns the attention first. That is our experience, not a published benchmark. Give every creator a unique code and a tagged link in both formats, then judge cost per sale by format. Our guide to tracking sales with discount codes shows how.

What do I need to disclose on a Reel or Story?

Both need the paid partnership label and an on-screen label. ASCI says a label on a video of 15 seconds or less must be visible for at least three seconds, and on a Story without a caption it is superimposed on the visual. See the ASCI influencer guidelines. This is general information, not legal advice.
