Link-led Stories

Instagram Story link sticker campaigns: tracking, briefs and the boosting trap

A link sticker is the only tappable link inside an organic Instagram Story, so a link-led campaign needs a briefed frame sequence, a tracked URL, a unique code and creator-supplied tap data. It also comes with a rule that stops those Stories being boosted.

In short

  • The link sticker works only in organic Stories. Meta says a Story with one cannot become a partnership ad, so decide before the shoot whether you will boost.
  • Meta's tagged-partner Story insights list reach, taps forward, taps backward, replies and exits for 14 days, but not link taps. Ask creators for their own link-tap screenshots.
  • Use one tracked URL and one unique code per creator, and check the page on a mid-range phone before the first Story goes live.
  • Disclosure on a Story goes on the visual under ASCI, and the creator also applies the paid partnership label.

An Instagram Story link sticker is a sticker that makes part of a Story tappable and sends the viewer to a web address. It is the only clickable link inside an organic Story, which is why Stories carry most of the "tap, buy, install" work in creator campaigns. A link-led Story campaign needs four things: a short frame sequence the creator can deliver, a tracked URL per creator, a unique code, and a plan for getting tap data back. It also needs a decision on boosting, because Meta says a Story with an organic link sticker cannot become a partnership ad.

This is one deep slice of our Instagram influencer marketing work, where the broader Story format is described, and it pairs with our comparison of Reels vs Stories and our guide to collab posts. For the full picture of how creator campaigns fit together, see our guide to influencer marketing in India. Menu names in Instagram change, so confirm where the link option sits in your creators' current app.

What Meta confirms

From Instagram's Help Centre pages on the link sticker, sharing Stories and branded content insights:

  • When people tap the link sticker in a Story, they are redirected to the linked website.
  • Link stickers can only be used in organic Instagram Stories. Stories ads support a default call-to-action sticker that sits at the bottom of the ad.
  • You can't create partnership ads from Stories with organic link stickers. To turn a branded Story into an ad, the creator should not include the link sticker. Meta's workarounds: add a link that appears as a default call-to-action sticker when you boost existing content in Ads Manager, or create a partnership Stories ad in Ads Manager when the creator has given permission.
  • A Story disappears from the profile, feed and Direct inbox after 24 hours unless it is saved to Highlights.
  • A video up to 60 seconds appears as one clip; longer video is split into several clips.
  • For a Story where the brand is tagged, the brand has a 14-day window to see reach, taps forward, taps backward, replies and exits. Link taps are not in that list.

The boosting trap

The rule about link stickers creates a fork you should settle in the brief, not after the Story performs.

If you boost, Meta's formats page adds more limits for partnership Stories: 60 seconds or less, up to five supported stickers, no poll sticker on an existing Story, no copyrighted music. Meta also says to leave roughly the top 14 percent and bottom 20 percent of a Stories ad free of text and logos so the call-to-action sticker does not cover them. A creator who knows this at the brief stage can frame the shot accordingly.

Our usual approach for a launch is two Story types. The first is the organic link-sticker set, run in the first 24 hours. The second is a boostable version from the creators with the best organic results, which we build with the creator's consent and ad permission. Our guide to partnership ads setup covers permissions.

Design the click path before the creative

A tap on the sticker is the start of a journey, not the end. The most common failures happen on the page after it.

  • One destination per creator, usually a product page or a landing page for one offer, not the home page.
  • Price and the offer visible at once. The viewer saw a code on screen; the page should confirm it.
  • Code applied by the link where your store supports it, so a viewer does not need to remember it.
  • Test on a mid-range Android phone on mobile data, opened from a real Story posted to a private test account. This is our own check; Meta says nothing about how pages behave after the tap.
  • App installs go through a tracked link that routes to the right store, with one link per creator so installs can be credited.

A slow page turns a good Story into a wasted fee. A creator can deliver a 3 percent tap rate and the sale can still die at the landing page.

This sequence is built around where the sticker sits. Time per frame is our brief, not a Meta rule.

  1. Frame 1, the problem. One sentence the audience recognises. Add a poll sticker only if you will not boost, since Meta lists poll stickers as unsupported on an existing Story.
  2. Frame 2, the product in use. Real use, not a studio shot. Six to ten seconds.
  3. Frame 3, the proof and the first link. The single claim your brief allows, then the sticker. Put the link here, after the viewer has seen a reason to tap.
  4. Frame 4, price and code. The code on screen and said aloud, with the offer end time.
  5. Frame 5, last call. The deadline and, where the app allows it, the link again.

The disclosure label belongs on frame 1 so it is visible to everyone who watches only a few frames; see below.

Put the screenshot in the contract as a deliverable with a deadline, for example within 24 hours of posting. If the creator also saves the set to Highlights, ask whether their insights still show; we have not found a Meta page that says. Our guide to UTM links for influencer campaigns has the naming convention, and tracking sales with discount codes covers codes.

A worked funnel shows what to compute. These numbers are invented to show the method and are not a benchmark. A creator's Story set reaches 40,000 people, and 600 tap the link, a tap rate of 1.5 percent. Your analytics show 480 sessions, which tells you 120 taps never loaded the page. Of the sessions, 24 turn into orders: a 5 percent session conversion. The code adds 6 orders that did not come through the link. At a ₹15,000 Story fee, cost per order is ₹15,000 divided by 30, or ₹500. The gap between 600 taps and 480 sessions is the part you can fix with the page.

  • Number of frames, the frame where the link sits, and the posting window.
  • The link and the code are supplied by the brand and are not changed by the creator.
  • Link-tap and reach screenshots within 24 hours of posting.
  • Whether the set is saved to Highlights, and for how long.
  • Whether the creator will shoot a no-sticker version for boosting, and the ad-rights fee if so.
  • The paid partnership label and the on-screen label on frame 1, with a screenshot of the live Story.

Our influencer contract guide covers the wider clauses.

Disclosure on Stories

ASCI says that for an image or video without a caption, which describes a Story, the label must be superimposed on the visual. Permitted words include Ad, Sponsored, Collaboration and Partnership, and a platform tool also counts. Meta's paid partnership label for Stories is added by the creator after choosing the photo or video, by tapping the tag icon at the top and toggling on the label. We ask for both: the Instagram label and an "Ad" text on frame 1. See our guide to the paid partnership label and the ASCI influencer guidelines explainer. This is general information, not legal advice.

  • The link goes to the home page. The viewer must hunt for the product.
  • A boostable creative with a link sticker. Meta says it cannot be boosted.
  • Code only in the caption of a different post. Stories have no caption; the code must be on the frames.
  • No screenshot deliverable. The tap data is gone when the Story expires.
  • Frame 1 is a logo. If viewers exit on the first frame, nothing after it counts.

Rates for Story sets sit in our influencer rates guide: about ₹5,000 to ₹20,000 for micro creators and ₹20,000 to ₹80,000 for mid-tier. If you want a plan with the link, code and boost fork set out creator by creator, send us a brief.

Frequently asked questions

What is an Instagram link sticker?

It is a sticker that adds a tappable link to a Story. When people tap it, Meta says they are taken to the linked website. It is available in organic Stories only. Boosted Stories use a default call-to-action sticker that Ads Manager places at the bottom of the ad instead. Menu names change, so check the sticker tray in your current app version.

Why can't I boost a Story that has a link sticker?

Meta says you cannot create partnership ads from Stories with organic link stickers. If you want to boost a creator's Story, the creator should leave the sticker out, and you add a link as a call-to-action sticker in Ads Manager. The creator can also give you permission to create a partnership Stories ad directly in Ads Manager. See our guide to partnership ads setup.

How do I track sales from a creator's Story link?

Give each creator a unique tracked URL and a unique discount code. The URL shows clicks and sessions by creator, and the code catches buyers who do not use the link. Compare both with the creator's reported reach. Our guides to UTM links and discount-code tracking show how to set this up.

Can the brand see link taps on a creator's Story?

Not from the tagged-partner view, on Meta's wording. Meta lists reach, taps forward, taps backward, replies and exits for 14 days. Link taps are in the creator's own insights, so make a screenshot a contract deliverable, taken before the Story expires.

How many frames should a link Story have?

There is no Meta rule. We brief three to five frames, with the link placed after the proof and the code shown on screen and said aloud. Longer sets lose viewers: watch the exit rate per frame in the creator's insights and cut the frames where it spikes. Compare formats in our post on Reels vs Stories.

Do Story links need an ASCI disclosure?

Yes, when the Story is sponsored or gifted. ASCI says that for an image or video without a caption, which describes Stories, the label is superimposed on the visual. The creator should also add Instagram's paid partnership label. See the ASCI influencer guidelines. This is general information, not legal advice.
